im VERY interested in everything lottie said to callie and im VERY interested in what callie thinks about it. like SURE, callie went to lottie to get the tape. but it seems she was building up the strength, in every minute she spent with lottie, to ask that one question she turns over and over in her head: does my mom even love me? (and regardless can you tell me she does so i can have that, even if i can't get it from my mom herself??) which is itself an admittance of the distance she feels from her mother!! but instead of answering lottie says you're HER! you're her but MORE her!!!!!! which is, first of all, a great narrative parallel to shauna's desire to be loved, regardless of her interest in returning it. then it goes further when callie KILLS lottie, which beyond freaking her the FUCK out probably made her feel close to her mom in a confusing way!! because that's not the part of her mom she wants to be close to! this feels like the perfect, tragic culmination of the way she's been trying and trying and TRYING to reconcile how desperately she wants to be loved by her mom, to be close to her, with the fact that she's actually maybe quite scared and resentful of the person her mom keeps proving herself to be!!!
but THEN callie does something different: she releases that act, at least a little bit!, by telling her dad what happened and being reassured that it was an accident of fear. and then the two of them LEAVE IT ALL BEHIND. letting go, leaving it behind - those are things shauna most refuses to do! which draws a firm, maybe even uncrossable???, line between callie and her mother.
and i'm sad lottie's dead because she would have been a great addition to this plot line and all the others, but i also get the set up here, which suggests that it was lottie's intention all along to keep the wilderness alive (WHATEVER THAT MEANS, EVEN IF IT'S NOT REAL AT ALL, BC IT'S REAL TO HER) in callie, so it can outlive the yellowjackets, who are so clearly fated to die.
MUCH TO THINK ABOUT!!!!
#there's so much stuff to unpack from this ep but this really was floating at the top of my head#and i think this was actually really well navigated narratively despite how sad i am to have lost lottie#yellowjackets

#LOVED IT i clocked shauna letting nat be in charge of this so fast#something about their whole dynamic seemed so much more gentle than it has been since I DONT EVEN KNOW WHEN#whoever said letting shauna in charge is what she needed to start being kinder again was so onto something#also nat is so NATURALLY good at being in charge#my beloved#oh and no one asked me but i love shauna sociopath shipman idgaf#yellowjackets

i feel like im the only one who just feels fucking sad about lottie this episode. shes a mentally ill unmedicated girl trapped in the wilderness trying to live up to the insane impossible expectations put on her by a bunch of scared teenagers. she's trapped in the throes of a twelve month long psychotic episode. she's scared, paranoid, and delusional. she's existing in a state of unreality exasperated by the fact that everyone around her is feeding into her delusions and encouraging them, because if they don't, what do they have ? there's no false hope, right ? only hope. and the only people giving her any pushback or trying to ground her are constantly attacked and ostracized for not prioritizing "the good of the group". and she just fucking killed someone. she's 18 and she killed someone.
#prev said:#van literally says this in s2. they made her into what she is#CORRECT#😭#it's all some shit isnt it!!!!!!#yellowjackets

buffy dancing with xander in when she was bad is so excellent because it's all about POWER. buffy says dance, xander dances. willow feels powerless (the way she most hates to feel!) so she can't do anything but watch. angel is paralyzed by his typical-for-the-time anguish about whether or not to indulge his emotions for buffy, so he can't do anything but watch either. even cordelia can't help but watch (and while she's watching, she sees buffy doing something she would normally do and realizes, again, just how similar they might be. but that's a different conversation)!!!
buffy KNOWS that xander will dance with her, that angel won't intervene, that NO ONE will intervene. that's why she does it! and when xander most thinks she's going to give him what he wants, she LEAVES! she's taking power wherever she can get it! she's deeply traumatized from being killed and wants to shed any weaknesses she perceives in herself. this includes how she feels about being vulnerable in relationships (which we'll sum up for now by saying does NOT come easily to her). she's also traumatized from learning she was fated to be killed by the master, which is why she can't make herself feel normal around giles. she knows it's not REALLY his fault, but it still sort of feels like it is!! and it's easier to keep him at an arm's length than to expect him to protect her! in fact, it's easier to keep everyone at an arm's length than to explain how she feels!! and now, most daunting of all, she's faced with the fact that she's STILL fated to die, that she HAS been since the day she was called, that she ALWAYS will be as long as she's the slayer.
this power thing is also so enticing because it's a rare and fairly overt acknowledgment of the fact that everyone orbits around buffy (in a way that goes beyond her being our protagonist). and they all CHOOSE to orbit around her because they can't stand the thought of being outside her orbit!! and because they project so much of themselves onto her that their strands have gotten crossed!! and because they see her goodness and power and bravery and strength and want proximity to those things!! this, for the most part, causes them to forget how hard being the slayer is for buffy and how different her position is than theirs, even when they fight the same fights. their inability to recognize the weight buffy carries leads to a lot of misunderstanding and turmoil down the line!! buffy herself is resistant to acknowledging this difference because she's invested in preserving her non-slayer parts and the things that make her the same as her friends! also she doesn't think of being the slayer as the advantage they see it as, and thus struggles to articulate the ways in which it actually IS a difference in her life and personhood. she's able to admit that she can't have a "normal" romantic relationship but seems unable to articulate how it impacts her other relationships, too! or how it informs her non-slayer behaviors! but all of that aside, and perhaps most CRUCIALLY, buffy LOVES these people and they LOVE her!! and that's more important than the power scales at play, EVEN as those scales inform their relationships. so it's easier for everyone to just push this scale out of their minds!!!!
also. the power dynamics are a good fraction of what make this scene so hot. that's really important too
#i know in the next episode she's like i danced w xander to make you crazy angel#and it worked!!!#(which also adds to the hotness of the situation)#and surely that's CONSCIOUSLY why she does this#but THERE'S SO MUCH THERE!!!!!!#an argument could be made that she wants angel to intervene but i think she knows he won't#someone has probably already said all of this and said it better than me but im just feeling really amped about this whole event#i have like 3 posts in my drafts about this episode LMAO i love it so SO much#when she was bad#btvs
