With vanilla extract being a meme, I wanted to share some black history of Edmond Albius a black slave who revolutionized vanilla pollination.
He used a technique he learned of pollinating melons to polinate the orchids to create the vanilla beans. Vanilla was rare and a luxury mainly due to only being able to be pollinated by its natural pollinator in Mexico.
unfortanely, he didnt receive any money for his discovery despite being called the main man who revolutionized pollination, he died in poverty...

everyone say thank you Edmond

This is one of the most interesting conditions I’ve ever seen in a will…
“To my oldest Son who shall survive me I give my broad Sword & Fusee [musket], the Companions of my revolutionary Toils, which I bequeathe as a precious Deposit, never to be used against a fellow Being except in self defense or to defend the liberties of the Country when invaded by foreign or domestic foes.”
(source: The will of Benjamin Tallmadge, dated August 24, 1831.)

I hate when people say slavery was 400 years ago. Slavery started 400 years ago. Slavery ended less than 200 years ago. Much less.
And I’m just talking about America, Brazilian slavery lasted about 20 to 30 years longer.
As in we have colored pictures of former slaves.
As in we have radio audio recordings of former slaves.
As in you could type” former slaves” into YouTube and find about 12 authentic, different interview videos.
As in the oldest person in America, who by the way is a black woman named Jeralean Talley who just died at age 116 would have been the daughter of former slaves if they hadn’t been born in the North.
Olivia De Havilland died just this year, 2020. Her Gone with the Wind co-star Hattie McDaniel died at a very young age, but being the youngest of 13 siblings, had she survived to 2020, some of her siblings and her parents were born into slavery.
We have broken audio recordings of Frederick Douglass’ voice for god’s sake.
Harriet Tubman died only 20 years before the full-fledged color picture existed. Meaning that adding color by professionals onto black-and-white photographs was already an established art.
Here, have a color picture of Harriet Tubman.

Educate yourself.

The House on the Rock

House on the Rock - Part 4
Built by Alex Jordan
This house and attraction was built by Alex Jordan. The project was started in 1945 and remained a work in progress for over 60 years. Shown above are pictures from the Heritage of the Sea and the Tribute to Nostalgia exhibits. The Heritage of the Sea houses a 200 foot tall original sea creature and over 200 model ship displays. The Tribute to Nostalgia holds an interesting collection of vehicles, shops, and other items.
