Inspect 221b Baker St. on Google Maps
Go to google maps, search up 187 N. Gower St, London, and drop the little street view guy over Speedy’s. Enjoy a detailed look of the set.
Has this always been here? Is this new? If it’s been around, I wish I’d known about it when I was writing fic!

'Holmes is heartless' 'Holmes has a bit of empathy' 'Holmes is a cold thinking machine' 'Holmes is vicious'
Holmes is playing lullabies on a violin to help his (boy)friend fall asleep and he's obsessing over bees and ash whilst adopting virtually every woman he meets. Leave him.

A while ago I had the idea to write descriptions of Holmeses (detectives) and Watsons (biographers) from across various adaptations, as though you're adopting them from an animal shelter.
Individual descriptions under the cut. Enjoy!
Holmeses:
Mr Brett
Mr Brett is very close to Canon and might throw some things around after being separated. With the right companion, though, he’ll thrive! Would prefer a single occupant home with lots of climbing space.
---
Rathbone
An elegant detective, Rathbone does have a silly side! He loves to play tricks and mess around with rope toys. You will have to watch him while he plays because he will tie himself up more often than not.
---
Howard
A fun-loving, giggly detective, Howard is a softy and very tactile. You will need at least two capes and deerstalkers available to allow for washing time, as he will insist on wearing one wherever he goes.
---
RDJ
RDJ is a very messy detective and goes through terrible moods when he’s on his own. He’s a sweetheart and very heroic, but he will probably follow you into places you don’t want him to be! Buy some locks.
---
Benedict
Benedict is a solitary creature, and has trouble making friends. He can be rude and off-putting but he is fiercely protective of the few people he likes. Might be willing to kill for you - try not to let him.
---
Herlock Sholmes
Herlock Sholmes is very outgoing and enthusiastic! He is constantly seeking companionship and may end up adopting you instead. Will need lots of space for flailing and dancing.
---
Merrison
A very talkative detective, Merrison can appear petulant at times - and he is! Once he knows you well enough he’ll become extremely devoted to you, even if he doesn’t show it very often.
---
Canon
Canon is our most senior detective! He’s been adopted many times but unfortunately keeps returning to us. He may seem cold and aloof, but he's really very friendly and loves to curl up in a comfy chair!
---
22nd Century (22C)
Something of a fish out of water, 22C will appreciate a home with lots of familiar elements he can use to ground himself. Suitable for someone with a regular routine and a space that he can claim as a retreat when he feels lost.
---
Jonny Lee
Jonny Lee is a lap detective, but only once he is comfortable. You will need to let him come to you for affection, as he won’t accept it when offered. Get used to him bringing you “gifts”, even unpleasant ones; it means he likes you!
---
Basil
Our smallest detective is nevertheless a big character! Animated and very quick, Basil would suit a small home as he doesn’t need a lot of space. Give him a few cheese crumpets and he’ll become your best friend.
---
господин Livanov
господин Livanov will come and go as he pleases, but likes to be warm and cosy when he’s at home. He also loves to tease, and enjoys the occasional round of boxing! He would prefer a companion who can speak Russian.
Watsons
Burke & Hardwicke
Our bonded pair of biographers, Burke and Hardwicke are both sweethearts. You’ll rarely find one without the other. Both are very loyal and have a mischievous side. Don’t wake them up too early!
---
Bruce
Bruce is perhaps not our smartest biographer, but he has a wicked sense of humour and is a friend to all. While occasionally clumsy and gruff, he will charge into danger to save you without a second thought.
---
Crawford
Crawford rather enjoys getting into scrapes - though he’d never admit it! He tries to be the responsible one but never really puts his foot down. Make sure to have plenty of arnica on hand for his next black eye.
---
Jude
One of our most independent biographers, Jude is still very loyal and willing to take up arms when asked, even if he seems a bit reluctant. Has a powerful side-eye and a bit of a gambling streak.
---
Martin
Martin has a temper, especially when patronised or underestimated. Needs an experienced companion who can keep him occupied and challenge him. Make sure he feels appreciated or he may wander off.
---
Iris Wilson
Iris is our youngest biographer and extremely intelligent for her age. She is still a child though, and can be a bit selfish and emotional. You will need to be encouraging and help her learn from her mistakes.
---
Williams
Williams is a biographer seeking balance in his life. He is loving and fiercely loyal to Merrison, but he also has a strong independent streak. Usually a very affable character, but if he gets angry, you will know about it!
---
Old Unreliable
Another of our seniors, this biographer can sometimes get confused about dates and the order of events. Just be patient with him and let him write in his own way. You’ll see how much of a conductor of light he can be!
---
Robotson
Robotson didn’t have the best start in life - his previous owners didn’t realise he was a biographer! Thankfully he’s recovered and is now ready to make a home with a new companion. Will need someone dedicated to his routine maintenance.
---
Lucy
Our only other female biographer, Lucy is very intelligent and has a wide range of skills, including hand to hand combat. She is also bilingual! She makes an ideal companion, but watch out for signs of distress e.g. dyeing her hair blonde.
---
David Q. Dawson
This decorated and distinguished pocket-sized biographer would be perfect for a smaller home. David is very polite and will do whatever you ask of him, but he doesn’t respond well to being shouted at. Cat-free household preferred.
---
господин Solomin
Though quite taciturn, господин Solomin is a sweetheart and quick to forgive. He’s very curious - try dropping hints about what you do for a living, and see if he guesses correctly! Provide lots of paper for his notes and doodles.

Favorite Johnlock Fics (BBC Sherlock)
I went on a bit of a fic-reading spree this spring, and this list of favorites is the result! There are many other fics that I’ve enjoyed reading, but these are the ones that I’ve really loved for one reason or another.
I’ve tagged the authors whose tumblrs I could find. If that’s you, thank you so much for sharing your writing with us. If your work is on here, you wrote something that I really treasure.
1. A River Without Banks, by Chryse. E, 203,286 words. Starts right after Season 3. A mix of Sherlock’s perspective, John’s perspective, and the perspectives of other characters. Sherlock-focused for the first half.
Author’s summary: “‘You love this, being Sherlock Holmes.’ He had once. When had it all gone so wrong?”
This is my absolute favorite. The author’s characterization of Sherlock is amazingly accurate, and Sherlock’s character development over the course of the story is breathtakingly executed and moving. The plot is fantastic and takes you on a page-turning emotional roller coaster, especially for about the first half of the story. I was also continually impressed by how many details from the show and references to earlier parts of the fic the author was able to weave in throughout while still keeping the story creative and original. Most importantly, though, I love this fic for the message that it sends about Sherlock and John’s love, which is a far more positive message than the one that the actual show settled upon in the end. I’m grateful that we have this version of their love story, and, personally, I like to pretend that this was Season 4 and how the show ended.
2. Another Country, by Chryse. E, 67,414 words. Starts right after the end of TAB. Sherlock’s perspective.
Sherlock spends one month and three days under house arrest in 221B, trying to get clean from the drugs, track down the new Moriarty, and figure out what the hell is going on between him and John.
Another fantastic work by Chryse. This author really gets Sherlock’s character, and once again the characterization of Sherlock is spot-on and convincing. There are a few other elements that also make this a compelling story, including smart use of minor characters, a solid central mystery, and a complicated relationship between Sherlock and John that includes a pretty convincing post-Season-3 version of John. Excellent.
3. walk through ghosts, by @augustbird. M, 6,125 words. Written between Seasons 2 and 3. Sherlock’s perspective.
Author’s summary: “The thing is: Sherlock thought that the two of them would have forever to figure it out.”
This is the saddest fic I have ever read, and so beautifully written. The author captures Season 2 Sherlock’s character perfectly; the fact that this story feels so real is what makes it devastating. The day after I read this, I couldn’t stop thinking about it and walked around with my heart physically aching in my chest.
4. Nature and Nurture, by @earlgreytea68. M, 203,273 words. Set sometime after Season 2. Alternates between John’s and Sherlock’s perspectives, but mostly told from John’s.
The British government clones Sherlock. He and John decide to raise the baby.
A true fandom classic. The premise sounds super cracky, but somehow it really works. This fic is surprisingly serious at times, but overall it is the cutest and funniest thing I have ever read in my life. Basically 200,000+ words of Sherlock and John being adorable gay fathers together and working through some feelings, with line-by-line some of the most hilarious dialogue ever. The five accompanying ficlets that the author wrote as short follow-ups are also worth checking out; my favorites were School (T, 4,753 words) and The Radovljica Apicultural Museum (T, 4,540 words).
5. To a Friend Who Sent Me Roses, by @algyswinburne. E, 16,147 words. Set sometime after Season 4 (but ignores TFP, as we all should lol). Sherlock’s perspective.
Author’s summary: “Five times Sherlock is mistaken for John’s partner and Rosie’s father, and one time it isn’t a mistake.”
This fic is sad, sweet, and hot by turns. Absolutely lovely to read in so many ways, and with so many great details and lines. I think this story offers convincing portrayals of what Sherlock’s and John’s characters might be like after it all and how they might finally get together. This and A River Without Banks are my favorite alternate endings to the show. Beautiful!
6. for all that bitter delights will sour, by @darcylindbergh. E, 9,585 words. Set sometime after Season 3. Sherlock’s perspective.
John initiates a sexually and emotionally abusive relationship with Sherlock.
The second saddest fic I have read. I would never want what happens in this fic to happen to Sherlock and John, so I don’t exactly recommend it as a Johnlock fic. But as a short story, this is a gem, full of absolutely gorgeous and incredibly moving writing. It depicts difficult themes very deftly, in lines and paragraphs that I had to stop to read over and over. I appreciate this as an emotionally powerful and thought-provoking piece of writing inspired by Sherlock, so for that reason I think it deserves to be on this list.
7. The Ground Beneath Your Feet, by Chryse. E, 68,803 words. Set after Season 3, but as if the last two minutes of HLV never happened. “The plane went on to Eastern Europe, and this is what came after.” John’s perspective.
This fic is pretty dark; the author describes it as “a PTSD story in which John was wholly devoted to Sherlock.” I don’t love it quite as much as the other two fics by Chryse that I’ve listed here, but that’s mostly because those two are just so amazing! I still really enjoyed this one. It was wonderful to see a kind and caring version of John emerge out of Season 3, and the story had several memorable moments, including one particularly nail-biting scene. I also really liked seeing John and Mycroft become friends as they bonded over their shared concern for Sherlock.
8. The Adventures of a Single Girl in London (Plus a Consulting Detective), by @earlgreytea68. M, 32,913 words. Set soon after Season 3. Alternates between different characters’ perspectives.
Bored with life at her new cottage in Sussex, Janine returns to London and moves in with Sherlock at 221B. Hilarity, heartbreak, and eventual Johnlock ensue.
This is a Season 3 fix-it fic that features an absolutely lovely friendship between Sherlock and Janine and the best version of Janine that I’ve come across in a fic. Sherlock is vulnerable and sweet, John is an absolute idiot, Janine is perfect, and the last two chapters just make me scream. Great stuff.
And that’s it for now! If you know of any other fics that I might like based on the above, I’d be happy to hear about them, so drop me a line!
Happy reading 😊

(LONG long post. click on the title to go to the link)
SHERLOCK WHUMP:
The Breaking Wheel (J_Baillier) - The instant classic. Prolonged, nuanced medical angst. The best. (and the 7PercentSolution & J_Baillier sequel On the Rack )
Lunar Landscapes (J_Baillier) - This author is a genius. And this work has practically every colour of Sherlock angst/whump that exists.
Fratros, Eros and Agape (emma221b) - John finds Sherlock bleeding in Magnusson’s office. What happens next (is glorious)
Harmless Things (J_Baillier) Scorpions do horrid things to Sherlock
All the Best and Brightest Creatures (wordstrings) - This is epic; and heartbreaking and beautiful. So beautiful….
My Will’s Not My Own (SailorChibi) - Read the warnings. This one broke my heart; oh Sherlock. It’s never his fault…
The Dying Detective Remix (SailorChibi) - When will Sherlock EVER ask for help.
Whenever it’s right (Aliea) - John sees a beautiful man with green eyes on the train. And then the train explodes…
Electric Pink Hand Grenade (BeautifulFiction) - Everyone knows this one. The greatest brain in the world gets the world’s worst migraine…
Dangerous Mould (Benfan) - (Near) death via a petri dish
Raison d’etre (AmphigoricSymphony) - This is like the War and Peace of Sherlock whump. Bloody Mary…
Lopov (AmphigoricSymphony) - Mycroft saves a brutalised Sherlock in Serbia
Addicted to a Certain Lifestyle (sfmpco) - Another fill-in-the-gaps after Sherlock’s collapse at Baker Street during HLV.
Your Visible Ghost (anactoria) - Read the warnings. Sherlock goes missing and John receives a video message…
Staircase Wit (splix) - Sherlock just keeps getting beaten (up). And asphyxiated. Quite beautifully.
The way it was meant to be (whitchry9) - John leaves Sherlock for just four days. And of course; pneumonia.
Fever (thecommonplaceofexistence) - John leaves Sherlock again. Sherlock gets pneumonia. Again.
How to torture John (Dlvvanzor) - Read the warnings. Seriously. Read them. This is Sherlock whump but almost equally John.
The Yellow Poppies (SilentAuror) - Mary is a bad person. Sherlock suffers.
Rush (Valxyri) - Sherlock gets drugged with a massive overdose
In The Silence (ScopesMonkey) - A longer saga (Sugerverse) is worth the read but this section is quite angsty and Sherlock gets concussion. Chapters 3 – 5 esp.
A More Vicious Motivator (ShezzasCompanion) - Read the warnings. Sherlock returns from Serbia and well, things just go from bad to worse…
Perfectly Fine (cabintardlock) - Sherlock gets ill and like an idiot hides it from his doctor…
Pain Management (TheGracefulBlueCat**) - Missing scenes from HLV most about pain and angst and trauma. **So many of this author’s works are wonderful Sherlock / John whump which I am not going to list here but recommend…
The Game has Changed (youtextd) - Mycroft arrives in Serbia too late to save Sherlock from terrible, long-lasting trauma. This is the story of how John and Mycroft help Sherlock back.
Not the King’s Men (StoneWingedAngel) - Oh god. Sherlock :-( this is as far as you can go before Sherlock is too traumatised to recover…
Getting Over It (The_Cool_Aunt) - Something’s not quite right with Sherlock. John starts to notice…
Finger Painting in the Dark (whitchry9) - Read the warnings. Moriarty gets his hands on Sherlock and well… it doesn’t go well. At all.
Tears of the Violinist (SUPRNTRAL LVR) - Moriarty steals Sherlock again. It’s brutal.
Cleansing (CumberbatchCritter) - John stumbles across Sherlock detoxing after being in hospital for so long. It’s a painful process.
Confessions (hockeylass) - John and Sherlock hit the road on a case; and then everything goes to hell.
Not Quite in his Right Mind (BakerTumblings) - Sherlock gets a head injury and it’s a shock for John…
No Incentive So Great (thisprettywren) - Sherlock argues with John. And then gets kidnapped. John is awesome.
The Fix (peg22) - Sherlock goes out for milk. And is injected with heroin.
Blind-Spot in Your Intellect (Only_1_Truth) - Sherlock tests a drug on a military-trained flatmate with PTSD…
The Emergency Contact series (blueink3) - Who Sherlock has as his Emergency Contact when he gets hurt, changes over time…
*******
JOHN WHUMP:
And a Doctor (StillWaters1) - One of my absolute favourites. Sherlock whump too. Doctor John everybody; stand clear.
De Ses Cendres (Amphigoric Symphony) - Tortured epic saga where Magnusson goes after Sherlock and well, everybody suffers. Endlessly
The Third Brother (uglycrow) - Another favourite. John gets wounded during a visit to the Three Garridebs.
The River Variations (withoutawish) - John gets hurt during a Three Garridebs encounter and Sherlock fractures
Into Dark Waters (Breath4Soul) - (TFP) John waits for Sherlock in the Holmes mansion’s well. He runs out of time.
We go anywhere but to the ground (geordielover) - Read the warnings. Sherlock is gone and John…. breaks.
There but for the Grace of John Watson / The Boys of Baker Street (skyefullofstars) - Parts one and two of a trilogy where John is kidnapped, drugged and becomes addicted and Sherlock is tested to the extreme. Bonus Sherlock whump amongst this sweeping narrative.
Reaction (Blind_Author) - Read the warnings. What happens to John before the semtex and vest incident at the pool.
Triage (scullyseviltwin) - John gets shot. Sherlock falls apart. The aftermath of that…
Handle With Care (TheGracefulBlueCat) - John gets attacked with a scorpion. What is it with these men and scorpions??
Very Good Indeed (stillwaters01) - John diagnoses what toxin he’s been drugged with and has seconds to guide Sherlock to saving him.
Deal (Basser**) - John underestimates his injury and scares Sherlock (**this author does lovely whumplets)
Vital Organs (firstdrafted) - How can John whump be so goddamned sweet. This is lovely

Things not to think about in regards to the John Balloon:
1. This balloon is filled with helium. Unless Sherlock just happens to keep a canister of helium in the flat (which we maybe shouldn't put past him), John had to go to a shop that sold helium balloons. He asked the shop-keep for one balloon. The shop-keep asked him which color he wanted. He chose red. Then he walked back to Baker Street from the shop, holding his single red balloon all the while.
When he got back to Baker Street, he had to hunt down a marker. Nothing with too sharp a tip--he wouldn't want to accidentally pop the balloon. Just a nice felt-tip marker. Then he drew some approximation of his own face on the marker. He's not exactly an artist, he knows, but he wanted to capture himself in some way, the way he looks when Sherlock is being brilliant. Then he found something heavy enough to tie the balloon to as it sat in his chair.
All because he thought Sherlock doesn't really care if he is there when Sherlock is working.
2. The fact that the balloon can still be seen in the flat after Mary's death. I'm not sure how much time passes between the introduction of the balloon and Mary's death (maybe a month?), but it's at least enough time for the balloon to deflate. It's essentially garbage, but Sherlock can't bear to part with it. He (reluctantly) moves it from the chair when others need to sit there, but he keeps it close. In his sight. Roughly around where John would be sitting were he to be there.
All because Sherlock will take whatever small part of John he can get in his life.

When Sherlock is too pretty
Can you imagine the self restraint that John has to show when Sherlock walks around being god-damn pretty in his posh suits with the straining buttons on his shirt and the long graceful line of his neck and that ridiculously pouty mouth, I mean phew it’s just illegal.
Well what if one day Sherlock just looks too fucking good and John’s mouth starts talking before he can censor himself and he says way too fiercely:
“I want to fucking mess you up.”
There’s an awkward silence. John goes red, Sherlock looks alarmed. John is never ever coming back from this.
“Go for it,” says Sherlock.
And that’s how they ended up having smutty, smutty sex, guys.

Do you happen to know of any fics that deals with John returning to the army after he has settled into life in 221b with Sherlock? Maybe him going to fight in Ukraine? I’ve been listening to Sherlock & Co for the first time so that was what inspired this ask!
Hey Nonny!
Ah, I recently had a similar list go around here, basically asking something very similar, so you can check out that post for some Soldier John fics; but as for that request specifically, I don't know of any of him going to Ukraine, though I do have a couple where he's back for a case:
Traitor's Gate by roane (E, 17,714 w., 6 Ch. || Post-TRF, Case Fic, Mystery, Bets and Wagers, Undercover for a Case, BAMF John, Scientist Sherlock, Teasing, Established Relationship, Military Base, Sexting/Texting, Military/Uniform Kink, Frottage, Dirty Sex, Anal, Bottomlock) – John and Sherlock go undercover at a top secret government lab to find out who is selling research. John is back in uniform and Sherlock is back in a laboratory, but they have to pose as strangers. Sherlock thinks he'll have an easy time of it, but John has his doubts. It's up to them to find out who is responsible for putting a dangerous weapon in the wrong hands, and try to keep their hands off each other at the same time.
A Week is Just Seven Days Isn't It? by scifigrl47 (T, 39,906 w., 4 Ch. || Humour, Friendship/Bromance, Stroppy/Bored Sherlock, Undercover/Army John, Texting, Pining-ish Sherlock, John Whump) – When John heads overseas for a week, Sherlock's forced to fend for himself.
