The manor is the biggest house that Dorothy has ever seen. It looks like something she might have seen in a newspaper, maybe in one of those stories about rich families back east, or someone of humble beginnings who struck it rich, found oil on their land or invented something that everyone loved and had to have. Not too many of those stories lately though, and not many ever seemed to come out of Kansas.
But any comment on the building is swallowed when the Governor comes out to greet them. Dorothy had thought to herself before that she had never heard of a woman governor before, she also hadn’t ever heard of one using a wheelchair, or who appeared to be no older than twenty-five years of age.
Dorothy would have said before that twenty-five was plenty old, but it hits her suddenly that it’s really not.

Tom Lehrer, Musical Satirist With a Dark Streak, Dies at 97
this should be a working gift link
Tom Lehrer, the Harvard-trained mathematician whose wickedly iconoclastic songs made him a favorite satirist in the 1950s and ’60s on college campuses and in all the Greenwich Villages of the country, died on Saturday at his home in Cambridge, Mass. He was 97.
"When you attend a funeral, It is sad to think that sooner o' Later those you love will do the same for you. And you may have thought it tragic, Not to mention other adjec- Tives, to think of all the weeping they will do. But don't you worry. No more ashes, no more sackcloth, And an armband made of black cloth Will some day never more adorn a sleeve: For if the bomb that drops on you Gets your friends and neighbors too, There'll be nobody left behind to grieve."

Hit pay dirt at St Vincent de Paul today. Where are we going to get costume patterns like this if the Big 4 go under?

When she’d returned home to Kansas, Dorothy had sworn to herself that she was never going to take her home for granted again. She was going to come home and be good and not cause trouble.
And she hadn’t, but she hadn’t returned home to a fairy tale either. Life went on and things changed. Kansas was still Kansas and a farm was still a farm. The old house had been half crushed by the cyclone, and that was still the way it was.

Oh, wow. For those who don't know, "scrip" is an old-fashioned form of credit used to control workers. Like, imagine if you worked for Walmart and were paid exclusively in Walmart gift cards. By limiting their pay to a form of currency only usable in company or government controlled outlets, there is no way for workers to ever save up or get a different job, sticking them in a loop of total economic domination.

Reading the excerpt of Sunrise on the Reaping and my mind honed in on Haymitch’s shorts, and just how much is said by that one little sentence. He mentions that they're made of an old bag of flour, and stamped on them are the words " Courtesy of the Capital".
This was a real thing, during the great depression era mother's used old sacks of flour, sugar and other things to make clothing for their children. Companies realized this and many began making their sacks with nice patterns. They tried to give these children a sense of normalcy, and a way to not shout that their families couldn't afford to get them actual clothes.
The Capitol doesn't do that. Instead they stamp them with their label. A reminder to the Districts that everything they have is only because the Capitol gives it to them. Their very lives are Courtesy of the Capitol. One sentence and Suzanne Collins has made a subtle statement about how the Capitol looks at the District children and does not care a lick about them.

Halfway through Sunrise Over the Reaping, and all the comments about trying to flood the arena, I can't help but remember that little tidbit about the earthquake triggering the flood the year Annie won the games, and just wonder, what in god's green earth went on behind the scenes that year, and for that matter, all the other years the victors we've met won.

After season 1 of Discovery, I described its main problem it had was 1. trying to change so much at once it often made itself feel very unTrek and 2. the things it DID include heavily from Trek canon were things that 1. many fans disliked from the start and on principle (Section 31) or 2 had long since worn out it's welcome in 90's Trek (the mirror universe)
After finishing season 2, the worst of these by far was chaining itself to section 31. Like, it was able to walk back the Klingon designs (which I only hate because my brain doesn't recognize the characters on screen as *klingons*), and towards fleshing out non-main characters (which season 2 took steps to do but didn't quite make it), and away from the Mirror Universe plot, but so much of the season plot was still wrapped up in section 31 shenanigans that its hard to divorce fan distaste for it from the entire show itself.

Things I have said - "they act like sewing is creative when it's actually just ironing and math"
Take up sewing! (They said) It's so fun making just what you want to wear! (They said) What sewing actually entails:
Math, particularly geometry
Cutting a straight enough line in bastard fabrics
Ironing
Advanced ironing
Pressing, which is NOT the same as ironing
Contortionism
Fearlessness in re: possibly sticking pins into yourself
Advanced thread location, mostly attached to the least accessible bits of your anatomy
Proof of concept 1920s-ish combinations are almost done, btw. :)

through with playing by the rules of someone else's game, ch 21
Munchkinland really was beautiful during summer, Fiyero thought to himself. Even if the rural setting required more walking than might be advised in his current condition, the wide paths made going slow with his cane easy enough and the landscape, with the green fields and lush flowers, was worth taking his time through. Especially, he thought, with Elphaba by his side, holding his hand.
Though he could do without the staring, he will admit, though he hopes that knowing he’s getting stared at too makes Elphaba feel at least a little better.

So, a coworker sent me a Spotify playlist that combined the soundtrack to Wicked with the one from the film the Wizard of Oz, in the correct spots they would be in the stories' timeline.
And hol-ee-SHIT.
It's too bad For Good probably can't use lots of the original films songs, cause like?
The cut from "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" to the reprise of "I'm Not that Girl"?
Or some "Follow the Yellow Brick Road" to "No Good Deed"? "No Good Deed" to "If I Only Had A Brain?". "The Merry Old Land of Oz" to "March of the Witch Hunters"?
It's emotional terrorism.

through with playing by the rules of someone else's game, ch 20
Nessa wakes first in the morning, as she knew she would. She rises quietly, careful not to wake the others, as even Glinda had slept fitfully the night before. Taking her bag, she returns to her own dorm before the sun even fully rises.
Stealth aside, there was another major reason she had chosen to leave this early. Multiple times this week she had face to face encounters with Morrible’s tik-tok assistant when in the hallway outside her room. Though she had always found him off-putting she had never bumped into him so frequently, and his brass, unfeeling face unnerved her and made her anxious, though she knew it really had no grounds. She had hoped to evade him completely on this day.
Most of her things were already packed up as there were only two days left of the school term, but she still does a quick sweep. Most of the things she needed daily were kept in her magically expanding shoulder bag. Having that thing was far too addicting, she thought. She dreaded that the day might come where she forgot it somewhere. She dresses carefully. Her nicest stockings and shoes and a plain skirt. The yellow blouse had been a gift from Glinda when she’d asked for aid in going through her wardrobe and determining what was suitable for her new role. She hadn’t thrown anything out yet, hadn’t transitioned in her clothing completely, but today is a good day to start. She tucks the coordinating jacket into the top of her bag. It’s been warm, truly early summer, and she doubts she will need it.
The sun is just beginning to peek over the horizon when she rolls out of the building and quietly through the back courtyard to the forest. Once the trees successfully camouflage her, she mounts her broom, dons her cloak and begins her journey southward.

Watching O Brother Where Art Thou? Immediately after getting home from seeing Sinners is giving me some hilarious crossover images
Namely, the guys (plus or minus Tommy) driving past Stack and Mary at dusk and debating loudly about whether or not to pick them up and none of them commenting on the very obvious blood all over them and "why are they just walking along the road at night?"
