I know Xie Lian sees Fangxin as an old, tired sword—he even goes as far as to think of it as feeble, at times. But after seeing the way Fangxin (or, rather, Zhuxin) behaves in the hands of its original owner, Jun Wu—aggressive, bloodthirsty, vicious—I can’t help but wonder if Fangxin’s behavior is purely reflective on how the sword feels about Xie Lian, specifically.
Think about it; the sword has only ever had two wielders. Jun Wu used it with evil, killing intent, but right before Fangxin was passed down, the sword was used to fatally stab Xie Lian 100 times. This sword—who had only taken one life at a time until this point—now had the arguably overwhelming experience of being glutted on the life of a single person 100 times in one sitting.
This could be seen as the equivalent of gorging yourself on one specific food so many times in a row, in rapid succession, that you make yourself sick on it. You may never want that food again, you may feel nauseous for a long time when you think of it. You might enjoy it, on rare occasions, but you’re forever reminded of that one time when you overdid it.
Fangxin is sluggish in Xie Lian's hands, reluctant to be used by him. The sword is repeatedly described as being fatigued, grudging, and without a doubt, unenthusiastic when Xie Lian wields it. But, considering what we know about the sword's history, it could make Fangxin's personality make a lot more sense.

Pre Third Ascension/Different First Meeting AU
Xie Lian gets cursed into a tiny version of himself (less than 10cm tall) while in Ghost City.
He keeps on being jostled around and almost stepped on.
Suddenly, XL sees the crowd parting for whatever reason and he takes the opportunity to breathe.
As the crowd starts closing back in XL makes the split second decision to grab onto the clothes of whoever parted it in the first place and hitch a ride.
XL eventually figures out who the red robed person unknowingly carrying him is and is determined to stay hidden.
After a long time of near misses from being spotted and experiencing the long day in the life of a Ghost King, Xie Lian accidentally falls asleep in the little nook he had found for himself.
Overal, he finds this Ghost Kind quite intriguing and nice to be around. In the time he'd been his secret passenger, Xie Lian saw Hua Cheng destroy a couple of nasty people/ghosts's lives, help out a ghost fire and visit a temple. Xie Lian thinks there are much worse people to have attached himself to.
Xie Lian wakes up to find himself still in that nook of space on Hua Cheng's person, but this time - they're inside a building.
It doesn't take him long to figure out that this must be Paradise Manor - Hua Cheng's residence.
He panicks - he really shouldn't have fallen asleep - he has no idea how he would get out or if the curse would run its course before he is able to get out.
(Also: Hua Cheng has been having trouble disciplining his spiritual weapon all day for some reason...)
Eventually they end up in HC's private chambers and XL gets off of him and hides under the bed for a while until he is sure the Ghost King is asleep.
This is such a mess!
Enter: XL trying everything he could think of to get out but failing because of his bad luck.
HC suddenly becomes restless in his sleep and XL doesn't have time to hide properly before he wakes up from a nightmare, hyperventilating even if he doesn't need to breathe at all.
XL sees the panic in his eyes and feels bad for him. Knowing his presence has been discovered either way (it actually wasn't but he doesn't know that) he decides to try calming the Ghost King down.
HC sees this tiny version of his god and thinks, "Oh, I'm dreaming," remembering other similar dreams he's had.
Deciding to make the most of that kind and wonderful dream, he allows himself to be comforted by His Highness.
Eventually he falls back asleep, His Highness cradled close to him.
XL can't escape at all now, carefully cradled in HC's hand as he was and decides he might as well go to sleep too.
As he does, he looks at the handsome features of the ghost's face and the scarred empty eye socket on display. How painful it must have been, he wonders.
XL falls asleep, feeling safer than he has in centuries.
Ending 1: HC wakes up to full size Dianxia and panics.
Ending 2: XL is still small, and HC still panics, but this time he also gets to see tiny Dianxia munching on a giant mantou. They would also have to go on an adventure together to break the curse, of course. Hua Cheng would relish being able to care for his adorable God, and Xie Lian would still find a way to kick ass even as small as he is.
