So. I doubt the words that I’m about to type is the actual answer. But I have an actual theory about this.

Velma is, for lack of a better term, “chronically online.” Although she’s mostly seen talking about her harmful communities and her witching communities, she’s young and quirky and Autistic enough for me to think she’s into fandom communities, too. 

Death In Paradise was filmed on the real island of Guadeloupe in the Caribbean, but the location is fake as we can see in the screenshot - Saint-Marie isn’t a real place, but it was filmed on a real Lesser Antilles island.

I think that Velma’s friend is from Guadeloupe, but Velma is quite obsessed with media and fiction. She never says this directly, but not being able to separate real vs fake is a huge thing in Octet. So if we assume Velma is a Death In Paradise fan, we can also assume she’d refer to Guadeloupe as Saint-Marie. Part of it would just be her quirks, but part of it would also add to the overall themes of the show.

I actually asked this in an octet q&a that the cast did during the berkeley run, and the answer was more or less what I said: An example of the blur between fiction/reality. I think for whatever reason, she either sees Saint-Marie as a real place, or she knows it’s fake but still refers to Guadeloupe as being Saint-Marie.

I’ve been practicing performing Beautiful and it occurred to me that I don’t know where Saint Marie is so I looked it up and

One thing that bothers me about the whole phone-into-a-fish thing in Octet is… did Little God ever turn Marvin‘s phone back? Or does he just walk around like “oh sorry I gotta go, my fish is ringing”
