[Image ID: A Doctor Who version of the Destiel confession meme. It shows Rose Tyler tearfully saying 'I love you' to the Doctor on Bad Wolf Bay in the episode Doomsday. Under that is a screenshot of the Doctor from the same scene, his answer is 'I regenerated into you'. /End ID]
I am sorry, but I just had to do this.

(another rant because its 4 am and why not)
i always think about filipinos and the pre-colonial culture of the philippines versus how i viewed it growing up. Like, ofc i dont know the intricacies and inter-tribe relations from pre-Spanish colonization, but thinking about how the Philippines was the trading hub of so many countried back then (like China, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, and many more), about how there was probably more of a mix between filipinos descended from austronesians and melanesians (most modern filos today are from austronesian descent), about how tribes were matriarchal, acknowledged the third gender with them even having a (for lack of a better word) special space within spirituality, about how our gods were gender-neutral, about how tattoos were celebrated and told the stories of a person's life...
Anyways, I just think about all of these things and mourn. Because I grew up in the Philippines in one of the rising metropolitan cities in the 2000s (now a proper metropolitan city). While my grandparents have contributed to the city's history and development (particularly my lolo and one of my titos helped with the bridges and its so good its still here today (which is fking rare with all the modernization and renos going on in that city) and I'm so proud of that and honestly very interested in that more modern history as well), the way I grew up under very conservative Catholic views (think cishetnormative, very right wing, fear God or burn in hell, this or nothing vibes) makes me feel suffocated at times. Growing up with that mindset fucked w me so much, especially bc so much of the parenting mindset is "obey your parents" and like privacy? boundaries? lmao no. emotions? not unless you can explain the logic behind it even if you dont have a rational reason for said emotions (or just couldnt say bc you know the reasons would make your parents mad.) Experimenting or exploring outside the norm? Only done if you snuck around and kept it hidden from sight. Like obviously this isnt limited to filo families but comparing it to my idealized nostalgic view of the precolonial period does make me sad a little. Like a part of me discovers and reads these things, have little mementos from those past (we love mainly gender neutral pronouns in tagalog), and it really is mourning something of what couldve been (and yk being angered bc indigenous filo tribes today are outcasted and literally unsupported and endangered by the ph government (although things arent great for most of the population either which is another thing to be angry about))
Like, I feel grief towards a culture I never knew, and feel lost lowkey because everything I grew up with feels so restricting. Rediscovering this aspect of my ancestors feels so freeing and ignites a rage within me about how we lost all of it bc some white people decided they wanted our lands and used religion and whiteness to justify their entitlement. And that mindset persisted to this day and morphed with the Japanese invasion and american occupation, and like. i grew up admiring anime and japan, and thinking the american dream was ideal and brought up to desire that and find better than the philippines (and god the fact that most mainland filos dont want to stay in the country is heartbreaking but thats the government's fault and a result of our tragic history).
idk this fixation on the before is maddening really. I love modern day culture: i love the jeepneys and tricycles with customized artwork painted by local artisans, the way i grew up in a neighbourhood where everyone knew each other, i love the ghost stories, superstions, and modern mythos, i love traditions that persisted to thiss day like tinikling, i love that we had end of year dance performances at school, karaoke, sari-sari stores, that local merchats selling whatever (tilapia, taho, balut, etc) would pass by my house every morning. heck, i even love that we had different uniforms for holy days and that easter is treated with such importance and centered more around jesus than bunnies (im atheist tho lollll), those little red flowers (santanas i think?) where you can suck out the nectar or make chains with them, and sm more. I love filo culture now but hearing stories of aspects that we're losing (traditional arts and crafts for one) and that there seems to be a more western shift due to globalization is sad. Yes, culture shifts and no culture is ever permanent. But, I think there's a place for what we lost or is fading away too. (the new standardized jeepneys and trikes suck. you can upgrade safety while keeping the personal touches ffs)
Anyways lol this train of thought was brought on bc my mom found out I had a tattoo (ironically enough, its a Filipino sun with different flowers inspired by gumamela) and got mad and started saying I "cheapened my body" and was "disrespecting myself" (i designed the tattoo using a reference from pinterest and placed it over my heart deliberately bc i love being filipino). And idk man. I just imagine my ancestors going "thats a sick fucking tattoo" as theyre painted in traditional tattoos. like spaniards called us "the painted ones" when they first came, but today im accused of satanism or consorting with demons for honoring my culture in that way. And then the latter half is bc I just started thinking more and went off a completely diff path
if you read this far, thanks for reading this loll its all over the place bc my thoughts generally have no structure to it
(note: i did move away from the ph when i was young so i never experienced current ph social culture the way it is now and the vibes. im going off of childhood, limited interactions from my cousins when i did visit and social media, as well as how my parents raise me (which is also stuck in the 60s-90s way of raising your kids and how they grew up and were raised by their parents). Modern social culture and vibes are probs different now than what i experienced lolll so uh something to consider with my rant and where im coming from))
(ran out of space in the tags so additional notes: lowkey i was smarter academically in the philippines 😭😭 they hyped up western academics so much only for me to get here and be ahead in the curriculum. but i will say, considering my pathways were limited to lawyer, nurse, or teacher in ph, im pretty grateful to be here (bc im pretty sure art and literature are encoded within my soul and doing anything else would be my undoing) so theres that))
( more things on what should be in the tags except i ran out of space, or a seperate post but im lazy: speaking of gender-neutral pronouns, my initial thoughts on the filipinx/pinxy debate has changed. I do think a lot of it included those feelings of keeping tradition but like culture, pronouns and languages shift to fit what is appropriate and useful for people today. like i still use filipino and pinoy in a gender-neutral sense but pinxy and filipinx (esp in context of genderqueer fil-ams) makes sense and doesn't change anything outside of being more inclusive (idk how you'd say this out loud though))
#is there a point to this#lmao not really outside of vibes#rant not essay#philippines#filipino#filipinx#pinoy#pinxy#pinay#pre colonial period#fk the spanish colonizers bruh#like we werent perfect (lots of land conflicts and other stuff some might call barbaric) but like#but come on#even our fucking name is bc iof some old white guy trying to honor some other white guys ego#(mind you king phillip ii did not give one fuck about the islands he forcibly grouped as a colony)#i doubt he even stepped foot in any of them#i do vibe with maria clara dresses and barong so ig theres that#dont even get me started on all our nb deities#i love that ph has a pretty accepting lgbt stance socially esp compared to other asian countried#(legally and religiously its different but when is it not)#like if you like loki as a nb icon lemme introduce you to ikapati/lakapati#think demeter but very trans and nb explicit#like theyre commonly depcited as a 'goddess' but the way womanhood and feminity plays into ph spirituality pre colonization is v diff from#modern times like trans women/effeminate men had v important roles#anyways thats a whole thing#also theres probs more but ik specifically tagalog mythos lol#anyways very much missing something i never had#also school festivals#bruh my cousin told me about school festivals and learning dances making banners and stuff#like thats so cool

I feel like this is an unpopular opinion, but more people should read incomplete/unfinished/in-progress fanfics.
I've noticed this huge trend where creators on tiktok and tumblr who will be explaining how to use Archive Of Our Own to new users and they always say "and make sure to scroll down and click completed only" or how people will go out of their way to mention they only read completed fics 'because they were traumatized when they forgot to check the dates and didn't realize this fic hadn't been updated since 2012'.
The thing is - I think by not engaging with and/or actively avoiding writer's WIPs readers are potentially adding to the aggregate of abandoned works. Now this obviously isn't the case for all abandoned fics, anything from major life events, to loss of interest, to getting busy can be a reason for a fic getting abandoned - but at least on some level I just know that writers are quitting while they're ahead when they aren't garnering any response or feedback because reading WIPs has become unpopular. If you're worried about reading something that hasn't been updated since 2012 then you can use the date updated function to sort out old fics.
Anyways, support your favorite fanfic writers by engaging with their WIPs.

People don’t realize how much we sound like other things because we are created from the same laws of physics. “That potato in the microwave sounds like it’s screaming” is funny because it really is, air is vibrating out of a small hole which is how our throat works too. The babbling river that sounds like humans whispering, that’s because it’s a wet hollow cave with echo delivering the same functionality. The river doesn’t just sound like us, we sound like a river. They use a metal trashcan to create a lion’s roar for movie sound effects. But the truth is, not only does a trashcan sound like a lion, a lion sounds like a trashcan. Cars purr when you turn them on. Everything is like everything else. Inanimate objects are not so far away from life as it seems.
Remember the next time you feel more alone in the company of large buildings, or maybe less alone among the rocks of the river, that they are not completely unlike the parts of you.
