Take My Hand
Fandom: My Hero Academia, Boku no Hero AcademiaÂ
Rating: G
Genre: Hurt/Comfort
Summary: The entirety of their relationship, it's Izuku offering his hand to Katsuki, waiting for him to take it.
Words: 1,045
The entirety of their relationship, it's Izuku offering his hand to Katsuki, waiting for him to take it. It takes a long time for him to do so, because initially he misunderstands - he sees that hand as weakness, as pity, as being looked down upon, instead of the love and kindness and adoration it really represents.
As they grow, however, as Katsuki becomes a less emotionally constipated bastard and actually understands what that hand means, he's able to take it. Takes it in rivalry, takes it in friendship, takes it in love, just so happy and thankful that he has Izuku and can hold him like this. That that hand is always offered to him.
But one habit he can never break is being the first to let go. Never being the first to reach out. He's the one who determines how long they hold hands for, and whether it's just habit or his pride or some deep seated issue he hasn't been able to break, it's something that continues long after he knows just how much he loves Izuku. Not that Izuku minds; they hold hands exactly the perfect amount, he points out with a smile, and is happy to accept whatever Katsuki will give him while he works on it.
And Katsuki does try, a couple of times. His hand itches to reach out and take Izuku's, while they're walking through the mall or on patrol or just sitting together at home, but for some reason he just can't. That little switch in his brain won't flip, and while eventually Izuku offers his, and then he can take it without an issue, he hates that he can't be the one to make the first move.
But then they're fighting, and the fight goes bad. It's a combination of everything wrong that could be - they're already tired from a triple patrol, awake for almost 48 hours without a break because this shit had been coordinated to drain them; there were more villains than they had been told about, so many more; the quirks weren't the ones they were expecting, faulty intel that left them scrambling in the middle of the fight to try and regroup and find a way to win.
It was almost as bad as the League, three months of this crap all culminating in this final showdown that was targeted at just the two of them, at this attempt to bring down the Symbols of Peace and Victory.
They won, because of course they did, there was no way some shitty extras were going to make them lose. But it comes with a cost. It always fucking does.
That cost is Katsuki on his knees, one arm wrapped around Izuku to hold him as close as possible, for the first time reaching out for his hand. "Don't let go of my hand, Deku." It's an order and a plea, and Katsuki is shamelessly begging as for the first time he says those words. Because for the first time he isn't going to be the first one to let go, not this time - the wound's too deep for any field dressing to do any good, he can hear the sounds of the paramedics, little Eri (not so little anymore as a sidekick with some rescue agency) is on her way and will save the day.
Izuku just smiles up at him. Gives his hand one long, tight squeeze. For the first and last time, lets go first.
When Izuku wakes up three days later, in the same hospital where he knows half the staff by name and is on nickname basis with the others, he's not alone. Katsuki is asleep in the chair beside him, hunched over uncomfortably so he can rest his head right next to Izuku's knee. Instinctively Izuku goes to reach for Katsuki's hand, to lock their fingers together so he feels a little more grounded, a little bit less alone, but is stopped by just how heavy his hand feels.
Even in sleep, Katsuki had refused to let go of his hand.
Izuku will get the standard scolding when Katsuki wakes up. "Take better care of your shitty bones, they're already weak enough. Stop trying to be the youngest pro hero to land up in a retirement home because you can't take care of yourself after you blast off all your limbs. Stop giving me a heart attack." Just like always. And just like always, Izuku will apologize, promise to take care of himself better from now on, though they both know what the outcome will be if it comes down to himself and a civilian's life.
But unlike always, Katsuki keeps reaching out. He reaches for Izuku's hand, to caress his face, lifts him bodily from the bed so he can slide in under him, resettling Izuku in his lap so he's wrapped around him like a vine. When they leave the hospital, the moment they're both settled into the car, the agency driver pulling out to take them home, Katsuki is the first to reach out, needing to feel the heat and weight of Izuku's hand in his own.
He's still the first to let go; they both have their own litany of nightmares, more than enough to keep a therapist well paid on them alone, but feeling Izuku's hand slip from his own, as simple as it was, was probably the worst. It doesn't matter that the rescue heroes showed up literally seconds later, that Eri was able to undo the worst of it all and her mentor was able to restart his heart, less than a minute total without him. Every moment stretched beyond what he had lived, the meaning of time lost in those precious seconds that he didn't have him alive and by his side and fuck if he was ever going to experience a single moment of that again. So he still lets go first. He has to.
But he reaches out just as often now, pulls Izuku close instead of just letting Izuku reach for him, an equilibrium between them as their fingers link and bridge the gap they can't close in public.
That horrible moment might have been the first time he reached out, but it wasn't the last.

Has anything actually gotten better, for all the work you talk about doing? Or is it just treading water in misery forever?
Anon, ten years ago gay people couldn't get married in large parts of the US. AIDS was an almost certain death sentence when I was in high school. I was looking at job boards the other day and found a part time gas station job that had health insurance as a benefit, which NEVER would have happened 15 years ago. When I was a kid, hitting your child was extremely normalized in the US and my parents were the weird ones for not doing it. There is a vaccine for chicken pox. I didn't meet anyone who had transitioned until my 20s because it was so uncommon to transition in the aughts, and now there are some states that protect your right to have gender affirming care provided by your health insurance. It's not all states, but it's better than the number of states that had it in 2010, which was zero. THERE ARE TENANTS UNIONS NOW. WE HAVE A VACCINE AGAINST CERVICAL CANCER.
And all of that has been the work of a lot of individuals and organizations and research teams and activists.

yo hey US people who sent in absentee ballots, they are tossing mail-in ballots for no reason. i just had to call my county board of elections and demand a cure for my ballot because north carolina didn't send out any notices of issues with ballots, and the issues are fake. if you voted by mail-in make sure your ballot was actually counted

Izuku: He's a 10, but he mutters everything he thinks and has been in love and obsessed with his childhood best friend for as long as you can remember.
Katsuki: Fucking 9 because he has the wrong family name.
Izuku:
Katsuki: Don't worry, he'll be a 10 after I fix it.

A Bk and O Dk's first pregnancy is a set of triplets. They're excited but overwhelmed, but get the hang of it eventually. They decide to have 1 more to make it even; they're some of the top heroes, they can handle 4.
Turns out it's another set of triplets, and Katsuki spends the entire time on the couch researching vasectomies. Eventually Izuku forgives him and lets him back in the bedroom.
Big mistake, when even with birth control and condoms less than two years later they're expecting.
That research Katsuki did quickly comes in handy as an alternative when Izuku starts giving Blackwhip knives.

Lil kids have a hard time with object permanence, right? Well, the Wonder Duo rarely have down time during the day, so on a slow day Izuku and Katsuki take advantage of it to stop by Inko's house while on patrol to have lunch with her and their kid. Their baby comes towards the door all happy and excited, only to stop and run away screaming stranger danger because Katsuki's in his mask and they don't recognize him. And let's be real, he is kind of scary for a little one.
Izuku catches the kid and promising it's all ok, it's just him and Papa, takes them back to Katsuki, who's pushed up the mask to show his face. But he has these bigass black circles around his eyes, so the baby just says "That's not Papa that's a raccoon." All sad and crying.
So Katsuki has to use Inko's makeup remover to get rid of them. The baby stops crying once he comes back looking all clean and fresh and they have a great lunch cuddling, buuuut Inko was also recording and if Izuku gets a copy of that scene that then gets shared with the former 3A group chat just so people can see how the Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight looked so upset his baby was upset and has gone so soft for his family, well, that's between him and the previous OfA users.

So you know how your breathing sounds like the ocean? Just, breathing sounds like the crashing of waves against the shore, if you sit and listen.
Katsuki's favorite place to be is the beach. When he's anywhere else there's always a risk - his sweat is literally explosive, and while he's normally the one who has to set it off, what happens if some dumbass accidently uses some fire quirk near where he left a sweaty handprint before it dries and becomes neutralized? So there is that fear. But at the beach it's gone, because the sand is either too wet to combust or dries immediately, and the water isn't flammable, so he can just be while at the beach without any worries.
So when he and Izuku start dating, Katsuki loves to rest with his head on Izuku's chest and just listen to him breathing. He's not ready to say those 3 words yet, it's going to take some time, but one day he just looks at up Izuku and says "You sound like the ocean."
Before putting his head back down to keep listening to the waves inside of Izuku, smirking when he blushes and his breathing picks up and it sounds a bit like a storm, because Izuku knows just how much Katsuki loves the beach and he knows what he means by saying that. And it's ok that he's not ready to say the actual words yet, because he already does.

Shit.
The rain was too heavy, washing away the slight bit of sweat he could feel forming on his palms. Even without it, whatever crap that asshole had shot them with was still there - the few sparks he could manage were tiny, smaller than what he had been able to manage when he first got his quirk. Even that hurt, singeing the skin, his control practically gone. Above him, Katsuki could barely make out the small flickers of green as Izuku clung to the rocky ledge, everything in him straining to keep hold. To dig his fingers in a big deep, to resist the pain in his muscles that were begging him to find a way to safety.
Something he couldn’t do carrying dead weight.
“Let me go.”
He wasn’t sure Izuku heard him over the rain, over the water below, over the pounding of their hearts in their ears (or perhaps just his heart in his own ears, loud and desperate), but Izuku just clutched at his hand tighter. A single glance down, his lips pressed into a thin line, eyes hard and determined. He’d heard, alright, and was refusing.
They would be found soon.
He knew it, and without their quirks...his leg was broken, the bastard had guns, it was only a matter of time before things went downhill. And that was if they could get onto the ledge.
Which he couldn’t do holding him.
“Izuku.”
Izuku jerked, his name taking him off guard - it had always been Deku, had always been nerd or idiot or some other insult said in the same gruff tone every other nickname was said. So to hear his name, just loud enough to be heard, in such a soft tone?
Katsuki should have said it before, in a better time, the closest he’d ever get to a confession.
“Izuku. I’m sorry.”
The rain washed away the sweat on his free hand, but the hand Izuku held, the one he clung to, still had enough. Not enough to badly hurt him, just enough to make him cry out at the surprised rush of heat, his fingers loosening just enough for Katsuki to slip his hand through, to replace warmth and safety and comfort with the cold rush of wet air. Izuku reached out for him, he saw the damn nerd’s hand holding onto the ledge loosen, begin to let go - another explosion, the most he could make as he fought against whatever poison flooded his veins, just enough to push Izuku up and onto safety, driving himself closer to the raging rapids below.
Izuku was safe, for now. He at least had a fighting chance. A chance to save himself and win.
Katsuki could go out with that.
“Kacchan!”
A pained howl, it rang in his ears as he hit the water, the last thing Katsuki heard as he closed his eyes and breathed.

So, I've seen a lot of talking about how shorting out really hurts him, since in the first few seasons it's shown that Denki can't really control his powers that well. Idk if it's canon or fanon, but the headcanon that follows comes from the whole Denki being dumb after shorting is his brain shutting down to avoid the pain thought process.
So, once he gets around to telling 1A about how it hurts when he shorts out, they 1) feel hella bad and apologize for making him the butt of the jokes over something that physically hurts him, and 2) some of them *coughDekucough* start to research how to avoid that. And while the obvious answer is for him to just not short himself out, obviously battle has shown that isn't always the answer. Sometimes Denki has to push himself to save others.
After researching and discussing with multiple people and everything, a good portion of A1 realize that it'd probably be less painful if his body didn't need to regenerate the electricity on its own. That's a lot of energy it's producing while already in a weakened state, so that's just even more taxing on him. So what do they do?
All of his friends and everyone who routinely hangs out with him/are paired with him in training start carrying extra portable battery packs and solar powered chargers with them. Yaoyorozu adds the designs for a hand crank charger and mini-solar panels to her design book. And Denki just thinks "Oh, yeah, it's good to have backups for our phones in case they die on us."
But then something happens - it can be training or they're caught in ANOTHER battle against villains or something, and he shorts himself out to get himself and some others out of a bind. But then he snaps out of it quicker than he ever has with five cords in his mouth that he's just sucking on and all these power packs in his lap, and he's been moved to a safe place, and one of his team members has stayed behind to cover him. "Don't worry bro, you charge up! I got this!"
And Denki just realizes he's not only the comic relief, he actually has friends.

Katsuki knew it was wrong. If Izuku found out, he'd never forgive him. He was putting seven years of marriage at risk for this.
But he couldn't help it. The temptation was too great.
Katsuki's hand pressed hard against his mouth to muffle the lewd groan trying to force through, trying to give a vocal legitimacy to his great sin. His eyes fluttered closed; he couldn't watch himself betray his husband like this, betray everything he'd stood for. He was a man of honor, of his word, and he was shattering it on the concrete.
Katsuki dropped his head into his hands, swallowing thickly to clear his mouth, shame and pleasure burning in his bones.
He was a cretin.
"Dude," Kaminari spoke up, glancing between a broken Katsuki and the rest of their friends. "It's just sashimi."
Katsuki's glare was watery, ineffective. How to make an idiot understand that seven months of no fish at all, in any form, even stock, had brought the Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight to his knees? Seven months of fulfilling Izuku's craving while ignoring his own, until now. But in doing so, he'd broken his promise to not eat anything Izuku couldn't. He couldn't hold out two more months to support his husband until their child was born.
He'd failed.
"Leave him alone, dude," Kiri said, waving off Kami's concerns. "Let him eat."
And eat Katsuki did, eat delicious bite seasoned with guilt.

Bakugou makes the claim that he's a bigger All Might fan than Deku is, and this really pisses Deku off. He starts listing every single piece of merch he has, and sure, a lot of it Katsuki has as well, but he stopped collecting merch years ago while Izuku is still going strong! But the entire time Katsuki just sits there with an infuriating smirk, nodding along, the entire time claiming he's still the bigger fan.
Finally Izuku just throws up his hands and demands to know what makes him the bigger fan.
"I have a one of a kind piece of All Might merch no one else in the world has, worth a shit ton more than your crappy collection."
And Izuku's brain just starts trying to figure out what piece Katsuki could have, how much it's worth, where he got it -
Katsuki leans forward and gives him a long, hard kiss, shutting down his brain like always.
"I've got his heir."
A few seconds of stunned silence while his brain tries to reboot before
"KACCHAN!"
