Vampires of Darkest Dungeon in D&D
Tumblr media
Halloween draws near! And with it moving towards the high-time for all things horror, I felt now would be an appropriate time for some homebrew for another of my favourite games that I hadn’t yet touched: Darkest Dungeon. Specifically, the Crimson Court. It just so happens that I started running a campaign with the  Curse of Strahd module a few months before the Crimson Court DLC was released, which makes me wish I had waited! Replacing bats with mosquitoes as a base for vampires has quickly become my favourite take on the gothic, bloodsucking creatures, so I’ve designed D&D rules for a few horrors of the Crimson Court so that you can use them in your own games!
Tumblr media
Manservant
Tumblr media
I prototyped the designs that would serve as a base for the other bloodsuckers with the Manservant, which took inspiration from the rules of lycanthropes and stirges (D&D’s classic little bloodsucker), which I worked on while comparing with the wiki for Darkest Dungeon, so that I could best mirror its stats in D&D.

Esquire
Tumblr media
With the esquire, one of the first larger vampires characters come across in the Crimson Court, I wanted to put it at an appropriate CR, and 3 seemed the one to go with. To put it at the right hit points and damage output, I created it in a way that it could use different tactical options in combat, such as the duelling weapons (rapier and pistol) in thirsty form, then a more violent close combat selection in bloodlust form.
Tumblr media
Courtesan
Tumblr media
I felt that to best represent their role in the court, and to mirror the theme of in-game abilities, I wanted the courtesan in thirsty form to have access to some bard spells.
Tumblr media
Crocodilian
Tumblr media
For the crocodilian, infamous for its sudden rise in power compared to other monsters of the Crimson Court, I naturally used the stats for the giant crocodile as a base. Apex Predator was inspired by the rogue’s sneak attack ability, which I then modified so as to better suit a lurking predator. Swarming Corruption was designed to provide an opportunity for the crocodilian to benefit from its Apex Predator ability, and took mechanical inspiration from the spell Insect Plague, from which I changed light obscuration to very short-term blindness effect to allow an opportunity for the additional damage from Apex Predator.
Although this is my first Darkest Dungeon D&D homebrew, expect more to come in the future. When I’ve posted more, you’ll be able to find it in my Darkest Dungeon tag. In the meantime, look out for more sinister stuff that I’ll be posting throughout the rest of October!

‘A glimmering blue tonic is set in a crystalline glass before you. The bartender, a fire genasi with a charming smile, informs you that this is his signature drink. Made from the powder of a Slaad’s crystal, he says. You can’t help but find his name, Havic, oddly fitting as he reads off a list of possible side effects. It doesn’t matter that he insists his name is spelled with an i rather than o. ‘
A Wild-Magic-like potion created by the wizard character of yours truly. Drink at your own risk!

Dark Souls: Hollows.  D&D 5e Monster Stats! The first in a series of creatures from the original Dark Souls that I wanted to stat in 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons!  And where would a Dark Souls game be without a bunch of walking corpses crowding your way? So here’s a variety of Hollows to use.  Some relatively harmless ones dressed in nothing but rags, a variety of warrior hollows, and of course some of the more dangerous Balder Knights and Hollow Thieves! Next up will be some knights (including everyone’s favorite duo), and some demons.

Let me tell you about
One Note!
It’s free, available on Mac or PC, has an app for your phone and is fucking amazing.
It’s all the fun of an old school binder, including tabs, sub pages and images, entirely in a digital easy to edit space. It’s great for people who want to keep large campaign binders but ink is expensive yo, and this is available to edit and make changes at any point throughout your day.
I’ve got an example here of my section for the world map of my campaign setting, and the individual pages for the individual locations. Then I’ve got the faction page I made with each faction’s individual page and symbol. Then you’re shown a look at a individual faction page as an example.
You can also password protect sections you don’t want anyone besides yourself, the DM, to have access to meaning you’re free to share this binder freely with your players.
Your players can have your entire campaign setting, where they’ve been, the npcs, the factions, etc. available at their finger times that updates in real time. It can sync between all your devices too.
I can not recommend one note any more highly for D&D prep and planning. It is seriously a life saver.

Vampires: The antithesis of the Lycans, Vampires rule the night. Wearing wet suits filled with blood to keep them fed and dark magic they stalk the shadows. Assuming the Stalker form Vampires tap in to their primal energies manifesting in the form of a massive humanoid bat like creature giving them immense physical attributes and a terrifying visage. While weak during the day few would dare oppose the Vampires in the dead of night.
Top to bottom, left to right:
Hemophage - Powerful blood magicians that can cast devastating magic attacks and crippling curses.
Bloodthirster - Scout berserkers hungry for fresh blood used to flush out living targets and cause chaos.
Bloodletter - Quick nimble flankers used to engage targets in close quarters combat and pursue fleeing targets.
Pariah: Melee fighters who’s sole purpose is to absorb enemy fire and draw attention away from their teammates.
Reaper: Stealth assassin shock troops that engage from the shadows.
Count: Elder Vampires that lead their teams and provide support shadow magic to buff their team and weaken their opponents.
Neophyte: New Vampires eager to prove their worth in operations and begin their path towards a specialization.

Random Gemstone Generator
Tumblr media
A “Gemerator,” if you will. Since there is already a way to roll randomly for gemstones in the DMG (p. 134), this series of tables is for creating brand new gemstones that might not even exist in nature. These are the gems as you might find them in a dungeon. To determine their worth, I would use the DMG. The appearance of the gem might not affect its overall worth since we are inventing new gems, so just make it worth as many gold pieces as is appropriate for the circumstance. You can also use this with my jewelry generator.
Gem Type
Most precious stones and minerals considered gems come in two varieties, either a stone or a crystal. Roll 1d6 to determine the gem’s type:
1: Stonelike (Matte)
2-3: Stonelike (Glossy)
4: Crystalline (Opaque)
5-6: Crystalline (Translucent)
Gem Size
First roll for the gem’s size. Since this is D&D, the gemstones can afford to be much larger than in reality. Fun thing I never really thought about before making this is that gemstones are a good way for adventurers to carry around gratuitous amounts of wealth in a smaller amount of space. Imagine carrying around a one-centimeter diamond instead of 5000 gold coins in a one-ton chest. Don’t ever dismiss the importance of gemstones.
Tumblr media
Gem Shape
Although a gem’s shape does come from its cut, to simplify this series of tables and increase the variety it generates, I’ve separated the gem’s cut and its shape into different tables.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gem Cut
Most valuable gems found in a dungeon have already been cut unless said dungeon is a natural cave system. To determine how the gem was cut, roll on the table below. Before modern advances, most hard gems were “cut” by abrading two gems together of similar hardness, beveling the natural crystal’s corners into facets. The gem dust from the abrasion was gathered and mixed with water or oil for polishing the gems into their finished form.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gem Color
Next roll for the gem’s color. I could have just gone with ROYGBIV colors but gems can come in many varying hues. If you roll a 20, the gem has two colors. Roll again, ignoring further values of 20. Then roll on the next table to determine how the two colors interact.
Tumblr media
Gem Pattern
Duo-colored gems are common, especially among stones rather than crystals. Think things like banded agate or tigers eye.
Tumblr media
And you’re done! You’ve got a brand new gemstone that may or may not exist in nature! Use it for important or unique magic items or when imagining a new mineral for your setting.
