He slept, curled like a kitten, his brow nearly touching mine, on the other end of his pallet. His breathing was deep and even, and one long hand was palm up on the blankets between us, as if in offering, or beseeching something of me. Sleepily I reached over and set my hand in his. The idea that Butler ten years ago would have been all "fuck this kid, ain't my problem" is incredibly funny to me

Butler was torn. His duty was to protect Artemis, not Minerva, but through years of working with Artemis and, indeed Holly, he had unconsciously adopted the role of general protector. Whenever somebody was in danger, he helped them to get out of it.

Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony - Eoin Colfer

I must have glossed over that bit in the books. I'm sure Artemis would have loved to study their evolution.

The quotation is from Luna Minor - a short story Colfer published together with the first Fowl Twins books. I think it's only in a special edition (or first edition) of the books. Artemis goes to space and is excited about the moon. It's so sweet how he dorks out over it!

I just realized a weird bit of implications in Artemis Fowl.

So demons evolved from bacteria from the moon, you know as you do. But that means bacteria was on the moon in the Artemis Fowl distant past. And bacteria is a specific branch of the tree of life not just any microorganism

Like this could be authorial oversight(maybe just meant microorganism) , but that is boring.

Alternatively bacteria evolved earlier than we thought and some survived the collision that formed the moon with some ending up on the resulting celestial bodies.

Alternatively, time magic nonsense left bacteria on the moon

If I had a nickel for every book about a smart 12-year-old using Santa Claus technology, with tech-elf side characters, mentally ill mother figures, dead dads, themes of loss, and magic ex machina taking place at Christmas time and written by Eoin Colfer, I'd have two nickels.

And somehow the books are foils of each other. Artemis would 100% be Juniper's nemesis if they lived in the same universe. Love that, love them.
