I have always loved folk art and this book drops modern color into ... I have always loved folk art and this book drops modern color into the Americana style I love. The artist encourages you to personalize each piece. I am planning to start with one of the easier projects, but I have to say that the book is so pretty to just look at, so I'm leaving it out to enjoy and browse through. My favorite projects are the cardinal and the Christmas angel. Go to Amazon
Beautiful tutorial book on folk art! I have been looking over a year for a tutorial book such as this to paint folk art. There are very few out there. I can鈥檛 wait to try some of the projects in here! The instructions look thorough and easy to follow. Go to Amazon
Five Stars wonderful book of instruction-great ideas , good illustrations Go to Amazon

would be great for brand new painters Received this book from NetGalley; all opinions are my own. Go to Amazon
Great book for any artist! This was an beautiful book filled with amazing artwork and instructions on how to create similar artwork yourself. My daughters love art and this book was another great one that allowed them to learn while also having fun! The books starts simple enough giving some context to the art form and them building from there giving the reader step-by-step instructions on what to do and how to do it. The book is a great one for any artist! Go to Amazon
Folk Art Painting Made Easy! This book is just stunning! I love Joy's artwork and was so excited to see her how-to book. It is chock full of projects and inspiration of classic American scenes. The step by step instructions for each project are easy to follow and she includes details such as what type of brushes you will need, and then how to hold them (critical for me - I'm a total beginner!) Every project starts with a sketch, and then moves on to adding colors and details. It makes it feel very do-able and not overwhelming for someone just starting out. Having said that, if you are a more experienced artist you will still appreciate all of the inspiration and more complicated projects. Just love this book! Go to Amazon
Enjoyed by a novice I purchased a Christmas puzzle by Joy and was excited that I could purchase more of her work. This book is a great mix of art and charming story telling. I am more of a right-brainer, but i did enjoy looking through each of her examples and reading the step by step instruction, that even the novice artist, much like myself, could follow. I chose Wash Day as my first piece and enjoyed sketching it. I could see this as a fun hobby to work on the same piece multiple times, as each one would be fun and unique. Go to Amazon
Easy to follow, and absolutely stunning. I found this book to be awesome. It is great for beginners as well as ... nice Fun Book! Gorgeous, Easy-to-Follow Expert instruction and Joy shares her stories with us through her book

Epic work for an epic man lovely, lovely piece of work. Gayford really has a way of transplanting you to the 15th and 16th Centuries before placing you almost square in the great man's shoes. You marvel along with Lorenzo de Medici at the early signs of genius, you feel his intensely reclusive and inscrutable nature so deeply you feel at one with him. You sympathize with his struggles with his piety and sexuality. You grow almost parallel to him and will be moved by his genius for lack of a better word.really it doesnt even come close to what he achieved. his pieta and Moses are awe inspiring, humbling, healing, and his frescoes are just brilliant.Martin calls the pieta almost hallucinatory in its presence and its power is almost overwhelming really. and I am not even a religious person.Tip: enjoy this book slowly, its one to savored rather than devoured.what a towering piece. Go to Amazon
SUPERB "LIFE OF" STORY of the greatest painter that ever lived. Superb Book, fabulous information and photographs. You will most certainly not have learned these facts in school! If you want to know just about everything that can be known, this is a great book to spend some time with. The story is as good as the art. One must always remember while reading, that the time and place this artist grew up and lived in... be prepared to transcend the urge to compare with modern artists, or see the story and art through modern eyes. All the fabulous artists from this time period were so very different, life was different... the art certainly blossomed because of that, we have nothing like it today. Go to Amazon
A very scholarly read If you are intrigued by the life and works of Michael Angelo include this book in your quest to learn. Gayford's research efforts are delivered to the reader in an academic yet personal style. He will take you to 16th century Italy and introduce you to Michael Angelo. A complex and very human artistic genius. I look forward to reading this book again with a notebook next to me. Enjoy this like you enjoyed your freshman European History class! Go to Amazon
Michelangelo: His Epic Life Overall, this is an impressive book covering the life of Michelangelo. It is apparent that the author put a lot of effort into researching the artist, including reviewing letters between Michelangelo and his friends and family. Also, I thought the author did a good job of setting the story within the historical context and events that were happening during the time period. This was the first book I have read on Michelangelo and I enjoyed it. Go to Amazon
Great psychobiography This book does a brilliant job of placing Michelangelo's life into the flow of political and religious history, which was often brutal. It is almost a novel, but with great psychological nuance. I noticed it was often for sale at the museum's in Florence, which I thought was a good sign. And it holds true. Go to Amazon
Excellent Such an exciting and vivid narration of one of the most genius and original artist of all time. Mr. Gayford skilfully takes us on a journey throughout the long life of Michelangelo, while introducing us to the political, social and artistic trends of the period. Excellent book. Highly recommend. Go to Amazon
Great read on an amazing man Great book. Easy to read and full of intersting details on M's life. He was an amazing artist who made a good living from his art, but he was frustrated by always being under the control of one pope or another to finish their projects. Go to Amazon
Larry David plays Michelangelo? My review will be quite different than others although I agreed with most things written. It is well-written and extremely informative, especially if your knowledge of 15th-16th century Italy is as limited as mine was. What I wanted to add is how funny the book was. Michelangelo was a very difficult person; some might say pig-headed. He constantly would commit to works that he wouldn't finish; often had no intention of finishing (although he was generally not very quick at paying back any up-front fees). Fired almost every person he hired and he found it impossible to work with anyone near his equal for any length of time. Thought that everyone was out to cheat him. In almost every chapter, there would be an instant where I would think, "oh, no, what is he going to do now to make things more difficult than they had to be". It was like watching Larry David on Curb Your Enthusiasm. "No, Larry, don't do it. Back away!" In many ways he was the original Larry David. Of course, he did greater things, although LD has done some pretty goods by modern standards. Go to Amazon
Honestly? The most incredible artist to have ever existed. IT's NOT working on my ereader! Five Stars Excellent in so many ways; but it;s a five-pounder easy; plus, the binding' way too tight to be able to read left-side pages. s difficult to read because of terribly tight binding Don't miss Too many names. An exceptional book - a must have title! I was amazed as I thumbed through the book at the diversity, quality, and sheer beauty of the art work contained in this volume. I have over 300 Disney themed books in my collection, and I am used to seeing the same art work "recycled". Not so with this book!! Most of the art I have never seen before! The text is lively and informative, giving insight into the artists' lives and influences. I will return to this beautiful book again and again to enjoy all it contains. Go to Amazon
Fantastic... through the eyes of animators. More, please! If you want access to the raw sketches of the most talented and prolific illustrators in the business, and to see through the eyes of Disney animators, this series is for you. I can't wait for more! Go to Amazon
Didier Ghez's 'They Drew as the Pleased: The Hidden Art of Disney's Golden Age' a must have for fans of classic Disney Animation I have been waiting for the release of Didier Ghez's 'They Drew as They Pleased: The Hidden Art of Disney's Golden Age'. The wait was worth it! Through intelligent text and wonderful illustrations we feel as if we are looking over the shoulders of four of the greatest conceptual artists of Disney's period of its greatest animation - the 1930's! The artists: Ferdinand Horvath, Gustaf Tenggren, Alburt Hurter, and Bionca Majolica! The title refers to what these four were able to do, drawing images that would give the feeling and inspiration to Disney's animators, Layout, and background artists for the short cartoons whether it be Mickey Mouse or Donald or Goofy, the Silly Symphonies, and his feature length films 'Snow White' and 'Pinocchio'! It could be a character or variations on the look of the film. They designed Props that might be seen in the background. Maybe the audience might not notice a cuckoo clock designed by Albert Hurter, but it would add immensley to the look and feel of the film. This books is a treat for the eyes and the imagination. Even if the reader is only has a casual interest in Disney animation, they will find pleasure in the huge numbers of images. This book is a must for Animation fans and anyone who derives pleasure from the beautiful artwork. Go to Amazon
Hidden Treasures I think other reviewers have pretty much voiced my love of this book. To say that a book covering the artists whose work never actually appeared on screen but were responsible for that classic Disney look, is long over due is an understatement. This book is a gem. Go to Amazon
An essential addition to a Disney book collection About the best recommendation I can give to this book comes from my wife. She enjoys Disney but is by no means the fanatic that I am. When the book arrived, and she looked at it she said, "Wow, that's really nice. Put it aside when you are done so I can look through it." Go to Amazon
Disney History at its best! Excellent book! Go to Amazon
A must for Disney Art Lovers! Another gorgeous, painstakingly researched book of Disney art history by Didier Ghez. The large landscape format is a perfect setting for the lavish background renderings, character studies, and concept sketches that went into the planning of every feature--even if, ultimately, the project never reached the screen. A fascinating "fly-on-the-wall" look at the Disney art department's creative process in its most productive years. Go to Amazon
Beautiful book! This is such a beautiful book! I bought it for a friend, but at such a low price I might even buy another for myself. I bought it for around $8 with free prime shipping, which is kinda incredible for a book of this quality. It's thicker than I thought it would be - around 200 pages, with plenty of informative text and pictures. The drawings are mostly loose concept sketches of characters, with some lavish scenery from major movies like Snow White or Pinocchio. The text is well written and interesting, too - I'm not exceptionally interested in Disney history, but I spent a lot of time reading through the book. Go to Amazon

Thorough and Readable (but expensive) This textbook was required by a class and panicked when I saw the prices for buying it. Being able to rent it cut the price to a third and made it affordable. Had I realized the quality of the info and the readability of the text, I might have considered continuing the search for a cheaper used copy to purchase, rather than rent. $60 for a rental is a lot and most textbooks I've found are not worth that. This one would be worth buying for that price (but not the almost $300 a new one goes for). Because mine was used, it did not include the MyArtsLab disk. I could have purchased it for $100, but after discussing it with my professor, decided to take the risk that I might not have access to some info and risk a lower grade. She didn't think it would cost me more than a letter grade. She was right. I was able to use what was in the book to learn the material and write the thorough critiques/comparisons she expected for class.I had to do some small amount of Internet searching for the extra insights needed for some of the assignments, but I was able to easily find what I needed in the book, without the expensive "publisher's content" available with the MyArtsLab purchase. well-written I have read numerous art history books, and most suffer from being dry and too heavy on dates. This book is well-written with a style that flows from topic to topic. All the important information (yes, those dates!) a student will need is here, but the presentation puts it above the rest, making it an enjoyable book to read again and again. What I found especially valuable is how Adams places the works within the political and social environment of the times. Knowing the history adds a lot to art history! She provides sidebars with anecdotes about the artists or significant events in the era that have influenced the work. Stylistic and technical information is also excellent. Photographic quality is superb. Go to Amazon

I really enjoyed this easy to read book I really enjoyed this easy to read book. The author's style is informative but not too academic and she keeps the actions going by just describibg the many interesting characters that inhabited the Parisian art scene at this time. Although she never uses the word, the book is an interesting commentary on the sexism that women have suffered through the centuries. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in this painting, John Singer Sargent or women, men and scandals of a not too distant era Go to Amazon
How Could This Have Gone So Very Wrong? Madame X is one of those paintings that everyone knows, or thinks they do. And there are many books about John Singer Sargent. So why another one? The simple fact is that the story behind the painting is even more fascinating than the story we think we know. Two Americans, trying to make their way in Paris society of the Gilded Age. One a painter on the cusp of greatness. The other a woman whose seductive power has opened doors that many American society women could not budge. The painting was to be their master stroke. But it backfired, and how! This book is well written, has plenty of illustrations (so important in a book about paintings), and is a glimpse into a world so very foreign to our own. What went wrong? Read on. Go to Amazon
The Professional Beauty and the Wonderful Painter Always a devoted fan of John Singer Sargent and enthralled by Madame X from the moment I first saw the painting, I devoured Strapless. I believe Deborah Davis did her research and I wish there was more to know about Amelie Avegno as both Sargent and the painting Madame X certainly have eclipsed the original woman. Sargent captured her in what I consider to be his best work, which is saying something considering he was prolific and left a mesmerizing look into the Gilded Age and those privileged few who inhabited that world. Amelie's life began in Louisiana, the daughter of the Proud South and a product of the plantation system, guided by her very strong grandmother and mother. The haunting photograph of Amelie and her sister, Valentine, during the Civil War shows the long arms and tiny waist as well as the Avegno nose which would be her trademarks later. Her life as an expatriate in Paris during a truly fascinating time period is intriguing while her ambitious mother set about marketing her daughter for a good marriage. Amelie embodied the modern woman of Paris but sadly, being a Professional Beauty has a short shelf life which doomed her to a miserably empty existence. Go to Amazon
Good backstory to a masterpiece I never knew the portrait was originally called Portrait of Madame X. I always thought that was how people referred to it because of its femme fatale attitude. This is an engaging back story to the painting of this iconic portrait. The author worked in Hollywood as a story developer and it shows. She takes what is essentially very little hard information and paints a vivid picture of the lives involved in this masterpiece and the era which produced it. The story development comes through in an overabundance of phrases like "One can imagine that she was among the guests at the grand ball." and "He might have felt..." Loaded with storytelling license that sometimes goes too far, it's still good to know the background of one of America's greatest portraitists and the woman whose reputation he ruined with his most famous work. Go to Amazon
This book is a terrific read! and as well contains good historical information about Paris at that time Four Stars America to Paris Five Stars How much have times changed? Five Stars Can never read enough on John Singer Sargeant. An amazing chronology of the impact of art. Five Stars

Great for wagon rides! The title of these dot-to-dot books should give you an idea of how many dots are on a page....a lot! And of course that means the numbers are going to be very small. Not for the faint of heart! ... I got into doing dot-to-dot puzzles back in the early 2000s with the David Kalvitis books, then sort of lost interest. Recently I got into coloring books for grown-ups, and this popped up on a "recommendations" list. I was intrigued, so I ordered it. Go to Amazon

Appalling quality card stock on a jacked up price, shame on Llewellyn Appalling quality card stock on a jacked up price, shame on Llewellyn. This by far the worst quality card stock I have ever had. I love the art but this deck, now $13 more than it was last summer when it ran out of stock worldwide, is also of extremely poor quality. It promises to bend and fray in no time flat and it's expensive to have to keep replacing. I am increasingly disappointed with Llewellyn's card stock and am going to have to stop purchasing decks from that publishing house no matter how beautiful the art. I recommend not wasting your money on this deck. It gets three stars rather than one only out of respect for the art. Go to Amazon
The Individual cardboard box for the cards is necessary!! The cards are as expected --> Beautiful!!... Very nice. Very nice. Good quality paper. Good variety of tapestries. Very fun to color. This is my first foray into adult coloring; I don't do any kind of visual art. I purchased this book along with 24 Prismacolor pencils. Brewed some tea, put on some classical music (Haydn) and am having a great time. Very relaxing. Have finished two very detailed pages and they look great. I'm eager to start on the next image. I recommend this book. Go to Amazon
Terrible coloring book Terrible coloring book. I love medieval tapestries, hence my purchase of this book. But as a coloring book, it is terribly done. The artwork looks as if a tapestry were simply photocopied, the colors removed, and then presented as is in the book, without being altered in any way for coloring. This is a bit difficult to describe. There are tiny little details that are too small to color, odd run-on sections that can't really be colored, and a host of other problems. Sad, sad that the publishers did this to tapestries :-( Go to Amazon
GREAT pictures on cheap paper.... This is a fantastic coloring book, I LOVE these kinds of pictures with all the detail, dont really like the ones that are "cutesy" with flowers and fish and so on. So I love the intricate design and the complexity of the pictures. Go to Amazon
Detail Adult Coloring Book with nice medieval images. Recommended! This is another coloring book that is very detailed and good for adults. There is a lot of detail and story telling to go along with each picture. I like that the covers feature two fully colored images from within the book so as to show the colors that would have been typically used during medieval times in tapestries. The paper is very nice, the printing is well done. I used a mix of marker and colored pencils and this seemed to work well. The titles of each tapestry and dates are included with the pictures so that you could possibly google more information if so inclined to do so. I would recommend this to my adult friends who like to color. Go to Amazon
A beautifully artistic coloring book for adults This is definitely not your child's coloring book (or the coloring book you had as a child). From "Death on his Pale Horse" to "The Griffin Protects His Lady" there's something here for everyone, except maybe young children. It's a very detailed book. In fact if you have problems with your vision or hands -- you may want to pass. I have occasional hand troubles and will be skipping coloring in it on those days. It's also probably far too detailed for young children. Not to mention that death, unicorns in captivity, and Trojan war scenes may be a bit much for them (not that there's violence portrayed, there's not). Go to Amazon
Not your run-of-the-mill coloring book! Omg, this one is incredibly challenging...so much so it could probably take several months (or years depending on how often you color) to do every design in it. Some of the tapestries are so intricately detailed I have to keep my pencils sharpened to a fine point just to stay inside the lines. Go to Amazon
Pictures on each page so can't use markers The pictures are gorgeous and intricate but you either have to use color pencils or make copies of the pages you want to color because you will get bleed through on the picture on the backside of the page using markers or pens. The pages are also thin and not preferated, so copying on inkjet is a bit complicated because you can't just pull the page out, and you also have to be very careful coloring copies with markers or the ink will run. I still think this is a beautiful book! Go to Amazon
I am describing this as an educational item as the ... I am describing this as an educational item as the illustrations are based off medieval tapestries and there is a short description under each picture. Pages printed on both sides with thick paper. There is a total of 30 illustrations, with no duplicates. Only 9 are on the subject of Unicorns, of them only 3 feature an actual Unicorn. So do not be deceived if you are looking for a Unicorn coloring book, but you should buy anyways because coloring books that feature The Unicorn Tapistries are rare. Go to Amazon

Exquisite Botticelli This book is marvelously illustrated. We had a superficial knowledge of Botticelli's paintings and were looking for a volume that would fill that gap. This book did that in spades. The color plates are beautiful! We didn't delve into the text enough to offer a critical evaluation of it. The cover image is a close-up of his famous depiction of Venus which stands as one of the greatest paintings of all time! The image of her face is intriguing as she is expressionless. Yet, I can't stop looking at her. It reminds me of paintings by Sulamith Wulfing whose subjects' faces draw you in with blank expressions. However, I am not suggesting that they are artists of the same order. The central figure of Venus is alluring but not in a lascivious manner, although Savonarola might disagree. Fortunately, it survived the Bonfire of the Vanities. The other paintings, including an astounding portrait of Simonetta Vespucci who is thought to be the model used for Venus, are exquisite. Great, Exceptional, Beautifully Executed HD Images, Fascinating Text. There are many Botticelli books floating around to remind us how far we have progressed in digital photography and the reproduction of art in books. Nothing I have seen comes close to the exceptional and unbelievably generous quality of these reproductions which have given me unexpected insight into the human hand that produced them. The text, while sometime tedious in its effort to draw sweeping generalization about the artist and patron agenda, and attributing intellectual literary sources to explain the iconography and symbolism behind the details, nonetheless brings to life the artist and his atelier in a way I find endlessly fascinating. What this book lacks, from the point of view of an ignorant artist like myself, is technical details behind how these works were logistically produced from raw materials and the naked eye. It would be nice if once in a while the scholarly critics stepped aside and gave voice to master craftsmen or artisan specializing in producing these kinds of paintings, or even the excellent people we do not hear about who painstakingly restore these painting from 600 years of pollution or neglect. Gret masterpieces of a great artist This book is just great, I always loved the works of Boticelli and will always adore this book form now on. Probably it's too big some may say, but the prints look perfect, with the best quality I could ever imagine. The paper needless to say is just fabulous too. For true collectors of painting art this is highly recommended! Enjoy! Go to Amazon
Botticelli Beautiful hard cover with story of the life of Botticelli by a known authority. I purchased the book after attending an exhibition in Williamsburg, Va.. The museum had sold out of all artist information, so I was delighted to find it on line. Go to Amazon
Poor I must disagree with one of the previous reviewers who said that the quality of the photographs were good. For a book of this size and hence, I assume, quality, they are really terribly poor. If you are not sure what I am talking about, just compare it to the gigantic tome on Leonardo Da Vinci from Taschen, which comes at about the same price, is about three times as thick, and has truly incredible reproductions where every crackle in the paint is visible. On the other hand, the Botticellis seems slightly out of focus so that you do not get a feel of the quality of the paint. Look before you buy. Go to Amazon
Absolutly great book The quality of photos of the paintings is very good. The book is a bit oversized so it may not fit most bookshelfs but for art lovers it is a must have. Go to Amazon
Highly recommended! Thank you! Smooth transaction! Highly recommended! Go to Amazon

Good book on subject The content is good with pictures of the textiles or other artifacts to help see the textile or technique used to make it. The first section gives an overview on textiles that I find repetitive and a bit confusing when you more forward aa you feel you are jumping around history but it is good section if you are not familiar with textiles. Excellent and informative book Excellent and informative book. If you are into textiles, this book gives a lot of information. It's worth buying. I wish the pages were not glossy cuz that brings geometry into the reading process since you have to angle the book to avoid lights. I also wish the print was a tad larger. Nevertheless, I'm satisfied with it. Go to Amazon
Amazing reference, but an interesting read, as well As a textile artist and a researcher in weaving, this book was recommended by several people. When I got it, I was amazed at the depth of the detail and yet how interestingly it was written. All too frequently, reference works are dry and unappealing, but that's not something you can about this book! Go to Amazon
Best book on textiles This is one of the best books on textiles I have ever read. The book is aimed at people who have an interest in textiles, without being an expert. The photos are well done and makes it a very interesting book. A real good buy. Go to Amazon
