I was commissioned to make an art quilt inspired by a photo of the HMS Endurance, Ernest Shackleton's antarctic exploration vessel.
Here are my reference photo (taken by Frank Hurley on August 27, 1915) and some process pictures!
I printed a scale copy of the image, then used it to create an applique pattern and to trace the rigging onto water soluble fabric so I could free motion quilt over all the lines. (FMQ is essentially freehand sketching with your sewing machine by manually moving the quilt under your needle in whatever patterns you want to create with thread.)

Favourite way to have your skull caved in?
i love the social space i've cultivated where i can be asked questions like this out of genuine curiosity and not as an intended threat. anyway it's gotta be steel toed work boots (NOT military) brought down directly on my face with lethal force. i bet it'd be really satisfying.

A creamware pitcher with transfer-printed decoration of the signals of the Portland Observatory (photo mine, taken at the Portland Museum of Art).
The Portland Observatory is often mistaken for a lighthouse, but is in fact a maritime signal tower, and the only remaining such tower in the United States.
Due to the many islands in Portland鈥檚 harbor, ships weren鈥檛 visible from the wharves which made it difficult for merchants who needed to prepare for the arrival of their cargo. Built in 1807 on Portland鈥檚 Munjoy Hill by Captain Lemuel Moody, the tower used signal flags and telescopes to alert shipping merchants when their ships were sighted. Moody charged a $5 subscription to these merchants to have their signal flags stored in the observatory.
The tower was functional until 1923, when communication by radio made it obsolete. Today it is a museum open during the summer months.
