English local council results are in and not great.
The first thing to note is that not all councils were up for the vote this time (I didn't get to vote yesterday for instance), and so the raw number of councillors isn't especially meaningful (especially as the selection of councils up for election this time skewed very Tory).
So we're better off looking at % change in seat numbers.
And the results there are (with the exception of Reform who did not have any seats previously, as they did not exist at the time):
LD: +78.7%
CON: -68.0%
LAB: -65.2%
IND: -18.3%
GRN: +35%
Looking at the raw numbers though, the number of Tory seats lost is almost exactly the same as the number of Reform seats gained.
The general trend (at this stage just looking at the numbers of councillors not specific changes) then seems to be that both Labour and Tory votes have collapsed, with Tory seats generally being picked up by Reform, and with the Labour seats being picked up by the Lib Dems and Greens (in practice there's probably also some non-trivial transfer from Labour to Reform, and Tory to Lib Dem).
This is a bad state of affairs for anyone on the left. Reform is doing a reasonable job of simply stepping into the Tories' shoes, but Labour's march to the right hasn't left a single definitive successor as the party for the left.
In short, the left is now more split than the right, by a greater extent than it was before.
