Naruto XXI
Chapters covered: 163 - 171 Nineteenth Volume of the manga
Site used: https://manga4life.com/manga/Naruto (VIZ translation of the manga)
Disclaimer: This is intended as a list and simple observations of the topics that particularly interested me in the aforementioned chapters, in that sense, do not expect a linear -or totally deep- analysis.
Tumblr’s update doesn’t allow me to attach more than 10 pictures, therefore, all of them will be LINKED. Apologies.
246) Is it possible to feel the ill intention of someone through their chakra? Kabuto seems to know about Tsunade’s intent to murder Orochimatu through her energy, so it’s likely (Ino also perceives the disturbances of someone’s chakra signature, as she did with Sasuke in the FoD). I’m not sure (can’t remember) if Kabuto possesses sensing skills (although there’s no specific mention of it in the manga) until his Sage stage, but maybe he realized through Tsunade’s visible chakra.
247) The reason why Tsunade didn’t accept Orochimaru’s offer was that Naruto reminded her of both Dan and Nawaki’s dreams (so I guess Jiraiya’s tactic worked). She ties the remembrance of her loved ones into Konoha, as I’ve said before, finally internalizing her teacher’s Will of Fire. Tsunade doesn’t question why the dreams both her brother and her lover had brought them death, she never questions the enormous sacrifice they made in order to be slightly closer to their objective, she fails to see why they wanted to become Hokage -to protect their people, yet they died because their own Hokage failed to do what the were told a Hokage did.
248) Chakra scalpels: their strength/intensity depends on the amount of chakra the performer is able to mold. According to Kabuto, it’s impossible to create a chakra scalpel that can cut through arteries in the middle of a battle, he’s able however of creating a chakra scalpel good enough to cut Tsunade’s muscles. Even Tsunade admits Kabuto’s jutsu instincts and sharpness surpass her in her prime. No one else received such praise from her.
Tsunade used electricity (her chakra natures are Fire, Water, Lightning, Earth, and Yang according to the Fourth Databook) to disturb Kabuto’s nervous system; however, Kabuto is able to learn how to move his body just moments after being attacked.
249) Medical Ninjutsu seems to consume too much chakra -isn’t a weird occurrence as Hashirama’s healing technique was based on his immense amount of energy.
250) Naruto didn’t know that Kabuto was a traitor.
251) The explanation of how Orochimaru was able to summon Manda -he did so with the assistance of Kabuto.
252) I’m incredibly curious about Shizune’s techniques. She uses poison, that’s canon -she’s also the one who assisted Sakura to learn how to create the medicine in order to cure Kankuro during Shippuden, it’s also considered by the fandom that she was the one who taught Ino her medical skills, as we saw her crying over Shizune’s body. Allow me to dream, but considering Ino’s job as a florist/botanist, having both of them specialize in poison attacks together would have been interesting to see. However, since Ino has not only medical ninjutsu but also her family clan's techniques at her disposal, that might make her particularly resourceful, minimizing the importance of every other kunoichi.
Shizune, Orochimaru, Anko, and Torune seem to be the only characters whose main attacks rely on poison.
253) “A ninja is one who endures” (x) of Jiraiya, vs. “A ninja is one who wields Ninjutsu” (x) of Orochimaru -this is an interesting dichotomy, as none of them contradicts the other, it’s also incredibly accurate to represent both Sasuke and Naruto as a ninja. Sasuke -up until the last chapter, is far superior to Naruto when it comes to Ninjutsu, but Naruto is incredibly tough and continuously increases his power/strength out of sheer stubbornness. Both of them have natural resources to move around the dogma they represent (Sasuke, the Sharingan; Naruto, Kurama), so they’re well-matched in that regard.
The Naruto fandom seems to think that Naruto lacking a vast repertoire of Jutsus is the way Kishimoto uses to undermine the main character, completely missing the point of his characterization. Naruto isn’t supposed to be flashy nor interesting, he’s supposed to stand against the norm (a.k.a the literal definition of a ninja, which is Orochimaru’s, hence, Sasuke’s), which is why he uses mostly two Jutsus during the whole manga.
This, again, doesn’t contradict Sasuke’s characterization, as being able to wield Ninjutsu isn’t opposed to being able to endure -and considering Sasuke’s arc and how he, until the very last moment, refused to give up on his journey, shows how he grew up to fulfill both visions.
The narrative tries to show us how Sasuke's path is wicked, which is why his decision to continue is painted in a negative light.
254) This I like about Naruto, even when he’ll kick and shout whenever someone puts him down or even points out a flaw, he seems to be aware of the issues he has when performing a jutsu. He knew he couldn’t do the Rasengan with just one hand, so he created a clone to hold the chakra of his attack; he’s far more resourceful (albeit, less “aesthetically pleasing” by shinobi standards) than people and fandom give him credit for.
255) “He mastered the Rasengan in only one week…” (x) technically incorrect, as Naruto had been training during the month prior with the different stages of the Rasengan. At most, he mastered the third stage in just one week, even tho he also started that specific training prior to meeting Tsunade, so perhaps a week and a few days.
256) Kabuto has the ability to activate his cells and reproduce them in order to heal (x), it’s similar to Tsunade’s regeneration technique and it also consumes an incredibly huge amount of chakra -Tsunade came up with the Yin Seal to cover that necessity, whilst Kabuto couldn’t. However, it’s to be noted the incredible capacity of Kabuto to perform Medical Ninjutsu, to be almost at the same level as Tsunade (not being her student but being taught some of her techniques) whilst being half her age. He also blocked the Kirakukei (Chakra’s flow system) so Naruto couldn’t heal himself through Kurama’s chakra. No other medic-nin used this type of attack, which makes him an opponent far more dangerous to fight than Sakura during Shippuden.
257) There’s a previous panel where Orochimaru states that he allowed Naruto to live out of consideration for Akatsuki, yet now, he claims it’ll be a problem if Akatsuki obtains him. Does he know why Akatsuki wants the Jinchuuriki? Nothing of what he says indicates that he knew they were planning to extract Kurama, his lines seem to point in the direction of Akatsuki training Naruto to work for them, otherwise, why kill him now instead of allowing Akatsuki to kill him themselves?
Unless he knows the endgame of Akatsuki, hence he wants to prevent them from obtaining Kurama.
When Tsunade saves Naruto from Orochimaru’s attack -he asks her “why to go to such lengths to save a Gënin,” to which she replies “I’m doing this to protect the village of Konohagakure”; there’re things to point out about this that intertwine this line with my previous point.
Naruto is the Jinchuriki of the nine tails, if he dies Konoha loses the possession of Kurama.
Naruto’s dream is to become Hokage, and the remembrance of Dan and Nawaki allows Tsunade to make a connection between Naruto’s dream and theirs. She also might be referencing Naruto becoming Hokage as a way to save Konoha in the future.
Naruto is the representation of Konoha and its people.
258) Yin Seal is being released, and I say this again: Tsunade is gorgeous, Kishimoto truly put effort into her design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Art of Mitonic Regeneration allows Tsunade to regenerate (not recover, but completely regenerate) organs and limbs -this jutsu uses so much chakra that Tsunade needs to store a specific amount in her forehead and release it in order to use it because, as I’ve stated before, she isn’t (and no one else but Hashirama apparently), to mold that much chakra (hence, the Yin Seal).
However, as Shizune states, the number of cell divisions in one lifetime is predetermined (meaning, limited), which means that speeding the process of cell division in order to regenerate such limbs and/or muscles shortens her lifespan. It’s not specifically stated when Tsunade came up with the technique (it’s likely that it was after Dan’s death) -but the reason why she has to Henge herself to look younger is that she used the Jutsu enough times to make her body visible affected by it (she might have used it during combats, but considering she forfeited her ninja life years ago, it’s a little bit more likely that she used it far more times when developing it). Tsunade’s age is often brought up. Considering everything the previous Hokage lied about, I’ll say Tsunade concealing her true appearance is the least of Konoha’s issues with their leaders.
259) The face of the body Orochimaru is using can be seen after his defeat at the hands of Tsunade, he’s definitely using a henge or a similar technique to maintain his original appearance.

Did you know this about the Senju's names?
Tumblr media
仏間butsuma: alcove/room where 仏壇butsudan, buddhist altar is placed. 柱間hashirama/space between pillars,bay-> 柱/pillars 扉間tobirama (no meaning) -> 扉/doors(hinges) 瓦間kawarama (no meaning)-> 瓦/roof tiles 板間itama/wooden floor room-> 板/woodenPlanks(flooring)
They end with 間ma/space, room. 板ita/瓦kawara are odd/boring compared to 柱Hashira(symbolic, used for counting kami, pillars/support), 扉Tobira(symbolic, gate to new places/changes)
Ah... but there seems to be a theme...parts of a traditional japanese house/architecture? or temple?
Similar Senju Names: Butsuma's name Mystery
Background: if you remember, Naruto manga was released weekly, Butsuma appeared in ch622 and had a week where he was unnamed. people tried guessing his name, based on pillars/doors/roof tiles/planks theme. Some guessed his name correctly. But naturally you get some silly answers.
Let's learn a few parts of a traditional Japanese house!(mostly end in ma)
梁間harima,etc -> 梁/beams
Tumblr media
襖fusuma are opaque/solid sliding doors(ex has black outline, white, but sometimes they have paintings), but 障子shouji are translucent sliding doors with wooden grids. 畳tatami is flooring in traditional house. 欄間ranma(my guess w) are carved/grid "transom window" above sliding doors.
Tumblr media
床の間tokonoma(床間) aclove for decorations, sometimes next to 仏間butsuma and often has a 掛軸kakejiku/hangingscroll as decor. 押入れoshiire is built in closet. 地袋jibukuro(red), is ground cupboard. Not the 経机kyouzukue/sutraTable, incense holder in front. Above is a frame of 無量寿/eternal life a reference for AmidaNyorai, important figure in esp. pure land sects.
茶の間chanoma(茶間) originally "tea room" for ceremony, but used like living room. similar to 居間ima, western style.
寝間nema is an old word for bedroom. 寝shinshitsu or "bedroom" is common modern days.
Joke guess but interesting history
陰間kagema... 陰kage\shadow... "shadow space"...
Tumblr media
painting by 鈴木春信SuzukiHarunobu of Kagema(boy prostitute) and customer.
Originally, kagema was a term for Kabuki-in-training boys, who didn't appear in stage,(in shadow space). Young boys(13-20) replaced women roles, and often did prostitution to make ends meet. Later term became synonymous with male prostitute and served men and women customers.
During later Edo period, "pinnacle of sexual passion" was experiencing men and women, so kagema "teahouses" prospered, but eventually faded until meji era's draft/changes which ended prostitution. wikilink
Random: Tsunade and Nawaki
of course Tsunade is a character from the famous goukan, "The Tale of Gallant Jiraya"
綱手tsunade is short for 綱手縄tsunadenawa in the olden days was rope to pull boat back to shore.
Tsunade's brother name in kanji 縄樹nawaki, is "rope tree", 縄nawa is thinner rope than 綱tsuna
Of course Nawaki and Tsunade names, makes me think of shintou practices of 注連縄shimenawa with 四手/紙垂shide wrapped around 神木shinboku/sacred tree, which are used to section off kami's world vs man's world.
Tumblr media
Interesting to think about.

The Rookie Nine have their birthdays all over the year, yet all their graduation ages are 12.
Shino - January 23
Sakura - March 28
Chouji - May 1
Kiba - July 7
Sasuke - July 23
Shikamaru - September 22
Ino - September 23
Naruto - October 10
Hinata - December 27
Tumblr media
I was trying to figure out what month they graduated in, but either the data isn’t correct or this is a bit more complicated than I originally anticipated. Could some of them have been born in the previous year?
For part two, we get a range of ages. Sakura and Naruto start at 15. Shino starts at 16. Hinata is also 16. What does this mean?
Scenario 1: Birth order: Shino (16), Naruto (15), Hinata (16)
This order doesn’t make sense. It’s based on the month they are born in: January, October, December, but Hinata is already older than Naruto.
Shino and Hinata were born in January and December, respectively. A whole year had not passed since Naruto returned and met Shino and Hinata. Naruto returns in chapter 245, and meets Team 8 after the Rescue Gaara arc in chapter 282. This part of the manga is sensitive to time, since Naruto returned 2.5 years after Sasuke left, giving him roughly 6 months before Orochimaru attempts a body transfer again. So it can’t be that a year has passed.
Scenario 2: Birth order: Hinata (16), Shino (16), Naruto (15)
This order tells us that Hinata was born in the previous year. This works out better, since now it is December, January, October.
Shikamaru is 15. Ino and Chouji are 16. Note that Ino and Shikamaru were both born in September. But given the ages, they appear to have been born in different years.
Sasuke is 16 as well. By the time he makes his first appearance post time-skip, chapter 300, we are steadily approaching the time for Orochimaru’s soul transfer.
Sasuke attempts to kill Orochimaru in chapter 343. From this post, we know that Sasuke left Konoha around August/September. So by the time he attacks Orochimaru, July has already come and possibly passed.
So what does this tell us about when the rookies were born?
September. Ino.
December. Hinata
January. Shino.
March. Sakura
May. Chouji
July. Sasuke.  Kiba
September. Shikamaru
October: Naruto
When would all the kids be 12? Never. Ino is a year older than Naruto. There is no escaping that. Ino is born on the 22 and Shikamaru on the 23, there is no way to reorder the list above to make this timeline work.
If Ino and Shikamaru are the same age, then by this time, enough time has passed and Shikamaru is now 16. Which is fine. This means that Sasuke killed Orochimaru late September or after.
So when is everybody 12? Between October 10 and December 27. So the graduation time would be during this time.
Hinata is stated to be 16 in the fourth databook, while her peers are 17. So I really don’t understand what is going on here.

I've just realised that all this Indra/Madara/Sasuke VS Ashura/Hashirama/Naruto has nothing to do with who's right or wrong. Both projects were flawed. It's not about logic, reason or making concession. It's not even about good or bad, not at all. It's about power struggle. One side has a policy of imposing without consulting anyone, bluntly, straight to your face. The other one is imposing a project by using steps, like a soft power getting harder the more you resist their will. First I'm talking to you, if you're not convinced, I harass you for years, if you're still not convinced, I'll beat you and force you to accept with or without your consent (because you can't ignore me anymore now that I control you). And if you ever had the silly idea of changing your mind I'll kill you and all your family.
Tumblr media
I quote the founders but there is millions of situations where I could have quote Naruto himself but you already know my attention span for him is super low so...

A small break from my pause to say this: It's amazing how many times I've read how good of an asset Hinata would be as a medic-nin when there's not a single indication that she'll be even remotely good at Medical Ninjutsu. Having the Byakugan doesn't guarantee a nice success rate, furthermore, it does not equate to having a good chakra flux control as Sakura canonically does; at most, Hinata would be able to see herself while failing, and that's it.
Being able to see chakra isn't the same as having delicate control over it.
[Let's completely ignore that in order to perform Medical Ninjutsu the user needs Ying and Yang Chakra Natures -Yang, at the very minimum, and Hinata has neither]
Also, being "caring" and "kind" aren't enough qualities to be a medic, because they aren't caregivers -these are people specialized to maintain soldiers alive to prevent their numbers to dwell much during an armed conflict. They're tools for a military state. No one cares if they're nice, Sakura isn't particularly kind nor is Tsunade, and they're really good medics.
In addition, stop pretending Hinata can see Tenketsus as Neji canonically does when he's thirteen -she was never hinted to see such microscopic points of chakra as her cousin was. One line in a databook that states "her Byakugan rivals Neji's" isn't enough to sustain such a claim. Can you allow the poor slave to have something at least?

If we're talking about genetics, then it's safe to say that anyone with Uchiha/Senju/Uzumaki blood has the potential to have either the Sharingan or the Wood Style or even both, as they are descended from Indra and Asura who are the sons of Hagoromo. But apparently the Kekkei Genkai genes are mostly recessive rather than dominant. I mean, if we are talking about genetics.
Disclaimer: I don’t know much about genetics.
The first few generations, starting with Kaguya, all had human partners. They had male descendants only for the first few generations. The alien side (and all the genes associated with it) was steadily watered down.
Kaguya (100% alien) + Partner (0% alien) Hagoromo had the Rinnegan. Hamura did not. Both brothers had horns. One had gray skin. One had gray-pink hair and the other had white hair.
Hagoromo (50% alien) + Partner (0% alien) Indra had the sharingan, a partial Rinnegan. Ashura did not have the sharingan, but had an important ingredient for the Rinnegan that Indra did not possess. No horns or gray skin.
Hamura (50% alien) + Partner (0% alien) Children likely all had the Byakugan.
Indra (25% alien) + Partner (0% alien) Descendants can activate the sharingan under certain conditions. Advanced versions can greatly harm the body.
Ashura (25% alien) + Partner (0% alien) Descendants can have enormous life force.
There is the mysterious appearance of clans like the Yuki and Kaguya clan. Kaguya’s children and grandchildren didn’t have these abilities, but somewhere down the line, there were descendants who awakened these abilities. Are these recessive traits? Haku was the child of a person from the Yuki clan and a farmer (who presumably did not have alien blood), yet Haku awakened Ice Release and was a formidable user of it. This doesn’t follow the pattern of a recessive trait.
Just from the fact that Sasuke’s daughter has the sharingan, we know that the Sharingan is not a recessive trait, ie: a trait that both parents need to possess, although we already know this from seeing Hagoromo and Indra.
Indra and Ashura each inherited something from Hagoromo that the other did not. They cannot give their children genes that they themselves did not inherit.
Let’s look at Nagato: one parent has red hair, indicating that they are the Uzumaki parent. The other parent has black hair. Yet Nagato has enough chakra/life force even as a child, that he can handle having both Rinnegan eyes. Adult Obito did not believe he could handle the power (chakra drain?) of two Rinnegan.
So, to answer your question:
it's safe to say that anyone with Uchiha/Senju/Uzumaki blood has the potential to have either the Sharingan or the Wood Style or even both, as they are descended from Indra and Asura who are the sons of Hagoromo. But apparently the Kekkei Genkai genes are mostly recessive rather than dominant.
No, this potential does not exist. And KKG are not necessarily recessive traits.
This topic is as simple as dominant versus recessive traits.
If someone more versed on the topic of genetics wants to add to this post, feel free to do so.
Thanks,

Konoha goes through stages of growth, where they break down their walls and rebuild them further away to increase the area within. Curiously, the buildings go from an older style of Japanese homes to short apartment style buildings. The older style of homes are not seen.

Most biographies of leaders in the manga and databooks mention one person uniting or leading a clan. Example being:
Tajima, databook 4: He is Madara’s father, who unifies the Uchiha clan as its leader.
Fugaku, databook 2: Leader of the clan, Fugaku has absolute trust in his son.
Hashirama, databook 3: A master of Wood Style ninjutsu and highly gifted as a shinobi, he was able to unify his fractured and diverse people.
Butsuma, databook 4: The Senju leader that commanded the clan during the warring era was Hashirama’s father.
The two brothers used their powers to unite the clan. So then surely, Madara is not able to unite the clan on his own.
This panel came from Itachi’s narration, so there is always doubt regarding authenticity, but it’s a curious detail to add. Surely, Madara was much stronger than Izuna, and was the eldest son of the previous leader. He had his “military achievements” much like Izuna is stated to have in his biography. Why would he need Izuna’s aide? Every leader has their council, so perhaps, that’s all this means. Madara had Izuna on his council.

Madara is a superb fighter, but he still got wounds on his body. There is a criss-cross scar on his right oblique.
There is a chest wound visible, but this may be the wound that should've disappeared after his Izanagi technique ended.
There is a scar on his left forearm.
Eventually, the manga just stops displaying many of these details. Probably because it is hard to pack so many details with a weekly release schedule.

Ever think how Sasuke was never really allowed to be himself around Team 7?
Everyone had these expectations of who he was and what he should be like and how he should think or handle his life and so naturally it was never safe for him to truly open up.
So then the Sasuke that Sakura knew, or Naruto knew, or Kakashi knew wasn't really Sasuke at all. Because other than brief moments here and there like the land of waves arc or a few times in the chunin exams, the real Sasuke was hidden behind the curtains he'd drawn to protect himself.
Part of this was trauma, yeah. But looking at how he was with team taka (before everything went to pot) and how much more open and communicative and expressive he was with them...team 7 was clearly never a place where he felt like he could be himself.
Sakura thought she knew Sasuke, but she only knew his face and the shroud of "mystery" that was actually pain.
Naruto thought he knew Sasuke, but he only knew the idea of rivalry and his own baggage of wanting to mean something to the leaf village.
Kakashi thought he knew Sasuke, but all he actually knew was the past he was still living in.
But Suigetsu knew Sasuke, because he talked to him and listened to him and saw when he wasn't OK.
Karin knew Sasuke, because she imagined what he must be going through to have made the choices he did.
Juugo knew Sasuke, because that's all he wanted to know.
I dunno, I say this a lot (like a lot a lot a lot) but Team Taka was literally everything Sasuke needed and they're so healthy for him and even each other and yeah. I just think they're amazing
