Alright, new character textures... where to start?

Like I said before, I like some changes more and others less. Overall I'm pretty neutral about it, but I also understand being upset about them bc it really should be optional (I saw someone say that the devs are working on adding a new slider for these textures, let's hope it's true).

My thoughts (specifically criticisms):

noticed that male characters have more detailed texture than female characters, and I kinda prefer the more detailed version. To me the difference on women is barely noticeable, and when they stand next to each other it looks a little silly

the inherent eyeliner and mascara on female faces look even more out of place next to new textures. There are some complexions that remove it, but I think it's not enough, and it would be better to improve the eyes as well (at least a little)

especially on togrutas, now that the eyeliner is even more intense (although not on all faces)

not sure if the texture update caused that or was it a choice, but hair colors look much lighter than before, and it doesn't seem to be a lighting issue. Black hair looks less, well, black (I remember when they added a new hair color bc the old black wasn't dark enough)

similar problem with skin colors. Some look more saturated while other look more pale. Could be a lighting issue in some cases, but I know at least some togrutas have slightly lighter skin now

patchy skin on chiss characters, but everyone already know that

I don't think lighting works well with these textures in a lot a pre 7.4 cutscenes. Often characters happen to stand in shadows so we can't see much, or lighting hits all the 'unflattering' details (in quotes because it's subjective)

I also suspect that my screen resolution might have played a part in my neutral-slightly positive impression. See, my screen resolution is this weird 1366x768p, so not exactly 1080p or higher as some people have, and it's possible that the textures are showing slightly less pronounced on my screen. Or maybe it doesn't matter that much.

And to show that it really is different depending on lighting and character, here are some pictures of my characters before and after 7.4 lighting changes.

Huge difference, right? In most cases the new texture isn't even that visible because it's either too dark to see anything or the lighting is too flat on the face.

I have one comparison, where both screenshots were taken in the new lighting, but it's dark so it probably isn't a good showcase:

However, without comparing to pre 7.6, sometimes my characters look nice.

And Vintu doesn't even look different lol

Can't believe I didn't mention this when I played the game, but one of the Soul Calibur games has three Star Wars guest characters! Considering how much I've grown to love SC series, having Star Wars characters there is like a dream (that I never knew I had) come true. Even though SC 4 is my least favorite in terms of fighting mechanics, playing as Vader and Starkiller is a lot of fun. Unfortunately I don't have Yoda, but I heard he is a menace in the game due to his size.

After seeing all the screenshots of characters after 7.6 update yesterday I decided to install the update and see these changes for myself. Unfortunately, the download required about 35gb of free space (I know it actually takes less space than that, but it needs this much to simply install), and I didn't have enough, even with moving some stuff. So I thought "screw it, I will just delete the game and install it again", hoping there would be enough space for that, and whaddayaknow it actually worked. Don't know if I want to repeat this process for every big update though.

Ngl I was kinda expecting to be disappointed by the new character textures, but it was way better than I was afraid in most cases. I'll share more details later, when I gather enough images to showcase, but overall I don't hate it. There are some things that should be improved, and it also seems like some faces turned out better than others, so some people got lucky or unlucky with the way their characters look.

🍊raspberry tangerine- what do they most like about themself?

Her name. Ryscha chose that name herself (she was trying to spell 'Risha' by sounding it out) because she wasn't old enough to remember her given name (Yarra) and she was left under the care of droids on Belsavis who only referred to her by a number designation. Her name is her first and most valuable possession that she loves dearly.

🍬 butterscotch toffee- do they prefer sweet or savory foods?

She prefers sweet foods. Growing up, she ate nothing but prison rations which weren't great quality but it was all she had ever known. Once the Jedi decided to train her as a weapon to use against the Emperor, she was exposed to a wider variety of food and developed a big sweet tooth.

❄️ frozen lake- how durable are they (physically) in harsh environments?

Ryscha was put through rigorous combat and survivalist training so she can push herself to a human's physical limits in harsh environments.

🌧eucalyptus rain- how do they like to spend a rainy day?

Ryscha would probably spend a rainy day meditating. She grew up in a cell on Belsavis and had never experienced rain or weather until she was around 10 years old. She loves listening to the pattering of rain, finding it very calming.

What Amarra likes best about herself is her blunt honesty. She is not a political schemer nor is she skilled at spycraft. She is a soldier and proud of it. Her honesty is also what helped her gain the position of Supreme Commander of Imperial Forces during the War with Zakuul and it also helped to build the early relationships with Republic forces that would eventually lead to the Alliance.

🍬 butterscotch toffee- do they prefer sweet or savory foods?

Savory foods. Amarra grows and cooks all of her own food and sees things like candy and sweets as a needless luxury that she does not need.

❄️ frozen lake- how durable are they (physically) in harsh environments?

Amarra has had extensive survivalist training and always wears armor that can withstand extreme temperatures. Like many Sith, she will push herself to her limits and beyond if that is what is needed to accomplish her goal.

🌧eucalyptus rain- how do they like to spend a rainy day?

If she was on Odessen then she would probably spend a rainy day ensuring that her garden is not being flooded. Otherwise, she will probably make herself some tea and just watch the rain as it falls (probably grimly contemplating the idea that just as the rain washes things away, all of her actions will one day also be washed away by the unstoppable passage of time - she has issues lol)

"I'm so sorry my child T^T": well, this is obvious - I put her through a lot of bad things, and it's even over yet (bc at some point Auletta will torment her. trust me it's needed).

(honestly, this is almost a 'free space' square, not many characters of mine escape the suffering in the name of character development)

"I would love fanart of them": always (could also be free space).

"Created on a whim": originally, Jett was made as a throwaway character to replay the bounty hunter storyline with some different choices. I wanted to experience the story as someone with a more reckless, fiery personality who loves a challenge, opposed to my first cool-headed BH with a more professional and careful attitude. Initially I didn't plan for Jett to develop any deeper than that, or play the expansions with her, but that changed as I played the story.

"Vital to the plot": yeah, she ended up being the main character.

"I would run away if I met them irl": well, she is a fearsome bounty hunter, but I marked this mostly bc if any of my characters met me, they would not be happy about how I treat them lol.

"I can see so much of myself in them": compared to most of my OCs, yeah. Physical traits aside (like green eyes, similar height, loving cooler temperatures and struggling in normal summer temperatures, and I did dye my hair red for a long time partially bc I wanted it to be kinda like hers), there are some personal struggles of hers I can relate to (though I won't go in detail, it's a bit too personal).

"I didn't realize how important they'd be": as mentioned, Jett was not meant to be an important character, but now she is my main. Went from a bounty hunter, minding her own business, to the Alliance Commander.

"Fan-favorite": if the amount of times she's requested in ask games is any indication, she is liked by people (and I thank everyone who ever showed interest in her).

"I love them Your Honor": obviously.

"Very good-looking": to me yes, idk about the typical standards (probably good-looking too).

"They get so much page-time": considering the fact that I tried writing years ago and didn't follow up with it, can't really say. If memory serves me right, I only ever posted two (very small, like a few sentences long) WIPs, and one of them is about Jett, so that counts as most page-time.

But if I was actually properly writing, Jett would definitely be receiving the most attention.

There are two squares I didn't check and wanted to elaborate on why:

I wouldn't mind knowing her as a person, but not be her friend. Maybe it's weird since Jett is my fave, but idk, I can't quite explain.

There is still quite a bit of her backstory that I have not shared, but nothing I wouldn't share, just haven't gotten to it.
