Éponine stood by in silent wonder as Guelemer strode past her with the struggling girl. She looked so small against his massive frame, and Éponine wondered why she even bothered to struggle. Couldn't she see her own impossible situation?
And then they disappeared below decks, and for the night, that was the end of it. No one spoke on what had happened, not openly, although she noticed quiet whisperings amongst the crew. She tried to eavesdrop a few times, but just as soon as she would draw near, the murmurs would come to a halt and even Montparnasse would say nothing to her about it. She had a sneaking suspicion that she was the only one involved who did not know exactly who this girl was.
Two days passed before she made any progress at all. She continually asked her father questions -- who is she? Why her? How did you know where to find her?
They had never been kidnappers before, after all. She felt no guilt over it, but a great deal of confusion. Her father was no help at all, for he would either ignore her entirely or give her only the most cryptic answers, things like, "You can't steal what was yours to begin with," and, "I'm just collecting what I'm owed."
On the third day, it was her mother who gave her the chance to learn the answers she so wanted, albeit perhaps unwittingly. Éponine was passed a tray of food and a key and told to take it to the girl.
She was almost too eager to deliver, not bothering to wonder what the girl must think of her. She had to know -- at least her name, she must learn. This whole affair is far too strange, and she feels as though it is important. Once she's closed herself into the room with their newest addition, she calms slightly, walking over to her and setting the food down. She looks the girl over. She's quite pretty, isn't she?
" -- You got a name, I take it?"

There was something about the night time that was appealing to her, but she was never allowed tot go outside when the sun was down. It was as if the outside world was forbidden…and sometimes Cosette hated it. It couldn’t be that bad out there…surely, her father was exaggerating.
The reasons were never really explained to her. Her father always said something along the lines of ‘it’s too dangerous…stay inside,’ but she longed to be out there. To see the stars shining above her head and the small garden she gas would probably look amazing under the moonlight. The small adventures she could have on her own. She’d be careful if she went out, and only would be gone for a few moments before going back inside, she didn’t want to upset her father.
So, she did. She stepped outside and was immediately captured by the beauty of everything. Oh, how different everything looked during the nighttime. She couldn’t comprehend why her father didn’t let her e outside at this time. After some minutes passed she heard noises and suddenly, fear flowed through her veins, making her eyes widened. She tried to scream, but a set of heavy arms were carrying her and a hand was covering her mouth.
She kicked and kicked but it was no use, this man was too big and strong, it was impossible to escape. Tears blurred her vision as she saw a ship, her heart racing. Now she understood why her father had told her so many times to never go outside — it really was a dangerous place full of people who wanted to harm her.

Rude, she says!
Oh, Éponine could laugh! This girl was worried about being rude to her. Could anyone else have called it rude not to pay for a girl who might sooner pick your pocket than shake your hand? Just on first glance, most people would assume that Éponine was bad news -- she was -- and steer as clear from her as they could.
What an unusual girl that's found her, to say the least.
Finally Éponine consents. Although she is not likely to admit it, she is secretly quite seduced by the promise of a full meal -- and a dessert. She does not know the last time she was able to enjoy sweets. Just the idea of being overfull on things she doesn't need is enough to draw her in. When does a woman such as herself get to enjoy the luxury of a belly full of sweets?
"Well if yer payin', it's probably rude t'say no 'r somethin'. An' we can't have that," she answers. She expects that this girl will not pick up on the sarcasm.

Éponine couldn't have said what it was she might have expected to find in his apartment. She hadn't known the man, so in truth she should have had no expectations at all, and she had thought it so, until she had actually made her way inside. Now she found it defied her secret projections quite extraordinarily.
They were neighbors, and so to expect his home to be so much grander than her own was rather childish, and yet -- she was a child. It did not show on her always. Often she looked well beyond her years. Often she felt it, too. She would call herself a woman, not a girl, and it was because she had a woman's cares. Food, money, shelter -- survival. A girl was cared for, kept, and coddled. There were some who would be girls well past a young age; some ladies would always be girls.
But Éponine had been a girl only briefly, only in her early childhood, and she had been a woman for some time since.
When Marius produced the letters, she took them quickly, making certain her expression was one of relief and not alarm. She smiled at him with her crooked teeth, holding the letters to her chest. She was not especially eager to take the money just now, though she could hear it in his hand. She found herself not yet ready to leave, and once she had the money, she would have no excuse to stay.
So she turned away, looking down at the letters as though they were something precious. "Ain't you just a gentleman, returnin' our belongin's like that," she said in a tone that was ever-so-slightly too grateful. One might question her sincerity, but never disprove it.
After speaking, she became quite suddenly aware in the differences between her own way of talking and that of the man whose home she had invaded. Of course she knew that she did not speak properly, and this was not the first conversation she'd had with someone who did, but it was always in an expected situation. Of course this man was educated, but he lived where she lived, just next door. He was every bit as much her neighbor as he was a student, and she had never been so painfully cognizant of her own way of speaking before.
She cleared her throat.
"I like books, too, you know," she told him, choosing her words quite carefully, pronouncing them fully. She looked quite smug then. "I bet ya -- you -- didn't take me for someone what could read, did you?"

“Spare change?” she asks. "--Not for myself, of course." She extends to him a letter.

Marius was not expecting company that evening; truly, he didn’t expect company most evenings. The man kept to himself and was happy to do so- He took pleasure in seeing the world but living in his own.
Not ten minutes prior had Marius returned from a scanty supper of bread and fish from a decidedly cheap restaurant. He had just removed his coat, draping it neatly over the back of a wooden chair when there came a voice- By no means a lovely voice- From the door post.
Quickly, he turned, lips pursed. It took him several moments to recognize the girl at the door as one of the occupants from the apartment next door. Marius shook his head quietly to himself, but not in refusal.
Perhaps he was not wealthy, but he certainly was not in such a position that he would refuse anyone- A family, he remembers now- What change he had. The man picked up his coat once more, searching for his coin purse in the folds of the coat. Marius glanced up, amending his shaken head to a quick nod-
“Just a moment, mademoiselle…”

A Thief on the Water || Pirate AU
Hours had she been here, peering out at the town from the worn, wooden ledge of the ship. The varnish was chipping in places, wearing thin in others. She picked at a crack in the wood, wondering how long it would take before this ship that she'd called home -- The Sergeant of Waterloo -- would start to rot beneath her.
She sighed and turned her attention back to the port. It might have been lovely in the daylight, but now at night, it looked cold and deserted. She had been place on watch duty, much as she always was, while her father and the rest of the crew, who termed themselves the Patron-Minette, made to rob the richest houses before taking their leave. They'd had a home in this port once, but she'd been very young, and she barely remembered it. Now it was little more than a target.
Throughout the night, she had seen one or two men sent back with what goods they had found in different houses. Now all she waited for was her father and Guelemer, who had gone together. M. Thénardier had insisted on taking the largest crew member, saying that he knew for certain now where to find the most important loot in the city, and that it was too much a task for a man so slim as himself.
When she spotted them -- Guelemer was always easy to spot, titan that he was -- her eyes grew round. She watched them board, and she understood now precisely why her father had needed a strong set of arms. He hadn't stolen someone's belongings -- he'd stolen a person!
