He's bleeding out from his thigh, his ribs, the shallow scrapes that sting worse than they should. The one at his throat is the one he presses his fingers to. He can feel the warmth running down, soaking the silver at his neck where St. Sebastian is shadowed in red.

He hasn’t been inside a church in years. Not since before the uniform, before the orders, before the killing became routine. The walls never called him back, and he never asked them to. Still, here he is under a roof made for prayer.

Maybe he should pray.

He thinks of Rodolfo instead. His voice, his hands, the stubborn way he loves.

Maybe God will forgive him for that. Maybe not. Alejandro doesn’t know if the pearly gates will open when he goes.

But he doesn’t dwell on the matter, though he feels the guilt should tear him apart, He’s already seen heaven in the eyes of a man who loves him. He’s already held the world in his hands and it held him back. What more could one mortal want.

Alejandro supposes it’s appropriate then, that he dies in a cathedral, so that only God may bear witness to his sins.

"Islamaphobia" as if it's possible to be "phobic" against a patriarchal religious entity that has 1 billion followers and authoritarian control of several nation states and military weapons across the globe. That word has to be biggest, manipulative gas-light of the century. The idea that a powerful religious organization run by men globally is some kind of vulnerable minority that needs protecting is absolutely abhorrent and one of the most dangerous, diabolical, perversions of social justice language we've ever witnessed. When Arabic or middle-eastern people are unjustly discriminated against, it's called racism or xenophobia- just like for every one else. Under no circumstances should their be any word that suggests it's possible to be "phobic" against a set of religious beliefs or customs. Especially an established Abrahamic, patriarchal religion. In my lifetime, I want this word totally expunged and destroyed from all progressive or respectable lexicon. For the love of God, challenge and shame all use of that word every time you see it.
