There’s such a delicious enjoyment for me in scenes that are fights between two people that are so brutal because of how intimate their relationship is. They WILL bring up ancient history, they WILL stab you in all your weakest parts, and yeah most sexy of all, they WILL say things to each other they can never unsay. It’s fighting as an act of intimacy (derogatory). Evil sex scene. Nothing better

hello there! I am so ready to talk about this actually. it's potentially a little niche but just stick with me it makes sense. to me <3

I'm putting it under a little thingymajig because this got. kinda long because as I say. ramble!!

so I know it will never happen because

1. I don't think there are any musical producers/directors who share my penchant for lesbian reimaginings of musical theatre characters.

2. I don't have to credentials to do it myself

but I just think that it would be so interesting (to me) to see matt played as another queer character in this show!! but specifically as a lesbian (not that I (lesbian) am biased or anything)

and then peter gets drunk on communion wine and tells lesbian!matt that he and jason are both gay and secretly dating. and it's just fuel on the fire of lesbian!matt's resentment of jason. now he really does have everything that she wants:

lesbian!matt who is being raised in this homophobic environment built upon shame and repression. lesbian!matt who is definitely in love with her girl best friend and sooo very ashamed of that fact.

so. it's still seen as "socially acceptable" for her to cling onto her in the way that canon!matt does in the show, to ask her for dances at her party and come across as jealous when ivy blows her off to dance with jason. her bff is ditching her for some guy, of course she's kinda annoyed!! but ivy's not just her bff, not in her eyes. the resentment for jason begins with this jealousy - he gets the main part in the show, he gets ivy...

he gets ivy's attention (which she won't ever get - not in the way that she wants) and he's in a gay relationship (the thing that she's been told all her life that she isn't allowed to want). jason's life isn't remotely perfect by any means but she doesn't have this perspective, obviously.

there's no wlw/mlm solidarity here, I'm afraid. it's all hostility unfortunately. it's a dog eat dog world when you're just trying to survive. she likes peter well enough, he just gets caught in the crossfire when she outs jason in one final act of frustrated, resentful jealousy. she doesn't get anything out of it - not even satisfaction. she probably outs herself in the process ("maybe he could make you feel real special like I always wanted to, but he's already in love with a boy") but she can't seem to stop herself.

I love how this idea was first planted bc one of my fave songs from bare: a pop opera has always been "are you there?" so I was like aawwhh I wish I could play one of these characters so I could sing this song and then I said...ohhh...hehehehehhh lesbian!matt!!!!

I hope this makes sense?!?! I think it would be a really interesting way to reimagine this character and add another layer of "the impact of growing up queer in environments where you're not encouraged to love and accept that aspect of yourself" that the show explores

peter is gay and frustrated that he can't be open about it. he's ready to come out and doesn't understand how anyone could say that god would think it was wrong. he struggles to understand why he should have to hide love ("our love was pure and nothing else brought me closer to god")

jason is gay and just trying to get through school so that his parents don't find out because he knows what the consequences would be. he has no hope at all for the future and never thinks he'll be in a position to ever come out ("this is always going to be a problem, peter")

anyways. do any producers want to fund this incredibly niche production of a musical that never gets performed?

and lesbian!matt is...well, a lesbian and both hates herself for it and hates jason because - as far as she can tell, despite the fact that there's not really any truth in it - he has everything that she wants to have but can't get. she's got that internalised homophobia that jason obviously suffers from and she takes it out on him

it's about co-dependent, slightly gay friendships that you're super invested in that fall apart in the most dramatic ways that you only realise were slightly gay in retrospect. it's about doing anything you can to survive in an oppressive environment, whatever the cost. and the cost is just...it's pretty huge :(:(
