Chapter 13: “international freak show”

You let your head fall on the dining table, exhausted. The desk in your room was too small for both you and Sungchan to study there, so you decided to move all your things to the living room, where the table was much bigger, although it is now barely visible under the messy pile of paper sheets, pens, markers, tablets, and sticky notes. Sungchan looks at the time on his phone and lets out an inaudible sigh.

“Maybe we should stop now,” he says, making you raise your head. “I believe we’ve studied enough, and the last two exercises you did were almost perfect!” “Almost perfect? I made lots of mistakes!” you complain, whining. “You did make some, but not as many as the first times I tutored you. You’ve gotten so much better!” As much as you’re convinced he’s saying that to make you feel less dumb, his words flatter you and manage to get a little smile out of you. “You think so?” “I’m sure of it. If you keep up like this, by the end of the semester you won’t even need our tutoring sessions anymore!” he exclaims seemingly happy, but your heart sinks a little at his statement. Unlike him, you aren’t so sure you can do it without your tutoring sessions. He always explains everything in a way that makes it easier to understand even the most difficult of topics, and studying with him makes maths a little more bearable for you.

“Well, it’s too soon to say that” you mutter, starting to tidy everything up, when a sudden thought crosses your mind. “But if this is becoming too much for you to handle, between school things and practice, just say it, and I’ll find another tutor.”

He seems startled to hear you say that, and it takes him a few seconds before he can reply. “Too much?” he asks in a high-pitched voice, going back to his normal tone immediately after. “No way! No, no, don’t ever think something like this,” he starts blabbering, “I like tutoring you! You’re brilliant, you study hard and never complain… it could never be too much!” He says a couple of other things while you finish cleaning the table, and you can’t help but let another smile slip out of your mouth, but you manage to hide it well. You can’t admit it to yourself yet, but that weird clumsy boy can lighten your mood and stop the flow of your thoughts effortlessly, and without even knowing it.

“What do you want for dinner?” you ask him, interrupting his flow of words. “Uh… well it’s your house and your kitchen, so you should decide” “What about some rice and fried chicken cutlets?” you suggest, already heading to the kitchen to take out the ingredients. “That’s perfect!” he exclaims, then proceeds to look for the objects he needs to set up the table. You try to stop him, telling him he’s the guest and you’re preparing that dinner as a thank you for his tutoring, but he insists. “If you cook, I set up the table, and then I’ll also wash the dishes!” As you try to reply, he interrupts you “And don’t you try to say a word! Or I’ll never tutor you again!”

You frown a little, but let out a chuckle immediately after. You start preparing the rice while letting the oil in the frying pan heat up a bit, while Sungchan puts the last things - two glasses filled with water - on the table. After he’s finished with his task, he starts wandering around the room, trying not to distract or disturb you. He notices some framed pictures on the wall near the kitchen door, hung up to create the shape of a heart. At the center of the heart-shaped photos, a piece of paper was stuck to the wall with some tape. Having a closer look, he understands it’s a sort of letter written in childlike calligraphy, starting with “Dear Mommy” and ending with your signature. Not wanting to invade your privacy, he resists the curiosity to read the content of the letter and keeps looking at the pictures.

“That’s me and my mom,” you say, and as he turns to look at you, he swears he can feel his heart swelling. You’re more beautiful than ever, wearing a long red apron, with your hair tied in a ponytail and the pan in your hand. “I-I’m sorry, I didn’t want t-to be nosy” he stutters while his face becomes of the color of your apron. “Don’t worry, those photos weren’t hung on that wall to be kept secret!” you reassure him with a warm smile and then keep cooking.

“You don’t look so different from when you were little,” he says, looking at another one of those pictures, one that portrays a little girl with a wide smile hugging a woman who looks like the adult version of the child. He’d have so many more specific questions to ask you, but he knows he needs to be respectful of your privacy and chooses to remain vague. “Do you think so? My mom always tells me the same thing, but I’m convinced I’ve changed a little.” “Yeah well, you… you’ve grown up… obviously, but- but your face isn’t that different,” his voice is trembling, but he can’t control what he’s saying anymore. “You were cute before, and now-now you’re beautiful.” His eyes widen when Sungchan realizes what he’s just said, and he decides it would be better if he shut his mouth for the rest of the evening.

You, on the other hand, are glad the rice is keeping you busy so that you can avoid facing him and letting him see how red your cheeks have become. Sure, it wasn’t the first time a boy made you a compliment, but Sungchan said it with such sincerity, kindness, and respect that you couldn’t help feeling flattered. It didn’t disgust you like the time Xiaojun tried to hit on you complimenting your outfit and your cheerleading skills - no, this felt much more natural and as simple as it was, it made your heart skip a beat. “Well, thank you,” you manage to say as you pour the rice on the plates, followed by the chicken cutlets. The smile on your face calms him down too, allowing both of you to enjoy a delicious dinner, and have a good time until, unfortunately for Sungchan, it’s time for him to go back home.

“Thank you for the dinner,” he says, leaving your apartment. “Thank you for the tutoring,” you reply. “And for the nice evening. We should do this again sometime!” Before you can catch him blushing again, he nods and waves at you, then walks towards the elevator, while you find yourself wondering what he could possibly have in him that makes it impossible for you to dislike him like the others.
