Above: Conseula Harris, 1938 Below: Beyonce Knowles-Carter, 2014
If people took the time to explore the root of what’s been dubbed as the “twerk,” they’d realise its origins lie in West Africa. It’s strikingly similar to the Mapouka dance from Côte d'Ivoire, a dance done by women that focuses on the buttocks. It’s existed for centuries. Perhaps twerking doesn’t have the technical depth or chronicled history of ballet. It isn’t viewed as a dance scholarship worthy discipline like tap. However, it has an equally interesting history. And when done properly, it takes tremendous skill and attention. Basically “twerking” isn’t new. Its ubiquity may seem sudden, but mainstream media’s merely catching up to something that’s existed in black global culture for years. (x)
ok so i’ve typed in Conseula (as written by previous) and Consuela (as thought to be by me) Harris and have found nothing specific on her. Can anyone change this??
Her name was Consuela, but she sometimes went by the name “Connie Harris” or “Consuelo Harris.” She was born and raised in NYC, and once worked as an usher at a theater called the Old Alhambra Theatre before being fired after management repeatedly caught her watching rehearsals upstairs. She decided to go into show business thereafter and joined Quintard Miller and Regent Slater’s productions as a chorus girl.
She’s most noted as an interpretive dancer during the Harlem Renaissance era who was featured in two of Oscar Micheaux’s 1938 films—Swing and God’s Step Children (listed as Consuelo Harris)—but she was also in the following films: Strike Me Pink (uncredited), Vogues of 1938 (uncredited), Harlem On the Prairie (as the role of Carolina Clayburn). All of this info is from this article.

God promises that He will draw close to you when you draw close to Him. How do we draw close to Him? First of all, this verse goes on to say that we must turn away from sin because sin separates us from God. When we turn away from the things that displease Him, we are turning toward Him. That’s the first step. Then, the Bible tells us to come into His presence with thanksgiving in our hearts and give Him praise. When you have a thankful heart, you are drawing closer to Him. Thirdly, scripture tells us that God opposes the proud, but He gives grace to the humble. When you live with an attitude of humility, you are drawing closer to Him.
Friend, there’s nothing more important in life than drawing close to God the Father. Seek Him with your whole heart, and you will find Him. Let Him speak to your heart by reading your Bible, praying and meditating on His promises every single day. Worship Him with a humble and open heart because when you seek Him, you will find Him, and He will fill you with His peace, comfort and joy all the days of your life!

One day, I realized he might not exist. My soulmate, I mean. I realized there might not be someone walking around this earth just waiting to meet me. Someone with a private world just as intricate as mine that, one day, I would get to share and be a part of and know. And I realized I was keeping a vacant spot in my heart for this person who might not exist. That I wasn’t allowing myself to be whole because how could I be whole with my other half missing? It was an excuse, of course. A simple view of life that would exempt me from having to put in the effort of filling myself up with the love I was waiting for someone else to supply. The reality is this: Life is a churning, chaotic thing with no guarantees, and in the throws of the tumbling you might run into people to hold on to for a while. Sometimes for a night, sometimes for life. And holding on to someone is a worthy thing. A wonderful thing. Something to look forward to and appreciate and embrace with your whole heart. But the love you get from holding on to someone will never be as reliable as the love you can give yourself. Right here. Right now. So here’s my advice. Be open to love, but don’t be empty for it.

Gidi Culture: Episode One
Halima Dan-Ladi Adebayo, is a naïve upper class Nigerian who is in graduate school abroad. When a critical accident occurs in her New York City apartment, Halima’s divorced Mother, Mariam Dan-Ladi, asks her to return home. Through six degrees of separation, Halima is introduced to characters and practices that she once ignored and often never knew existed.
This is a fun and engaging offering that gives a realistic glimpse into the different levels of society in a young, social and urban Lagos! It also features a great performance from the lead actress Toni Tones.
We recommend!
