Festival Brief Summary

For this new brief, I have to create a full brand experience for my own festival. I have to fully visualise a new brand identity, think about the visual tone of voice and design visuals to attract a defined audience.

FESTIVALS -RESEARCH

To kickstart the new module we were asked to briefly research further into small independent festivals and events with an open ended theme along the lines of  design, music, food, drink, art etc. It was important while researching to keep in mind all the design elements and process stages that are involved when creating a brand new face for a festival considering more design outcomes other than a logo or colours scheme and also keeping in mind the important roles graphic designers play when it comes down to creating the visuals for an identity, such as:

BIRMINGHAM DESIGN FESTIVAL

The Birmingham Design Festival is a vibrant and creative immersive festival created by a group of designers and practioners that are based in the Midlands. The space offers a variety of interactive workshops, exhibitions and screenings, inviting Birmingham’s local community and beyond on an four day packed programme to show the world that the city’s design community is one to be taken seriously of, as its often tossed aside. The festival thrives on this element of building a community and engaging people and that tied in with the overall share for design whether you're interested in design or not. The concept of the overall festival is interesting and brings together multiple areas of design together all under one roof. Again the ideation of immersive-ness and this idea of creating not just for artists but also for the general public is an element worth picking up, with this idea of a cohesiveness audience. Compared to other festivals with similar themes in the field the Birmingham Design Festival is rated at an affordable price (with free events) which provides an affordable service for all visitors while still being able to maintain a high quality, the majority of the events are rated as a free or very low cost to attend the events. Overall the Birmingham Design Festival seems to communicate well in design forms for its intended audience which explains its successfulness in outcomes and how the festival has been running for a few years now.

GREEN MAN FESTIVAL

The Green Man Festival world is flooded with bold and wild illustrations capturing the atmosphere of the event itself with this almost free spirit and strange yet unique experience. Although they appoint a new artist each year they still keep in theme with this folklorishly monster like creatures. The festival is named after an ancient nature deity believed to originate from Pagan times which relates well with the overall design and visual brand identity .

Concluding my festival research and all the visual elements in which makes a strong identity I narrowed down the themes in which I found the most interesting but also got a further understanding in the works of a graphic designer in this field which will hopefully help me in my new project with the basic understandings.

ANINMATION STAGE

THE ANIMATION STAGE WITH THE PRODUCTION WAS DIFFICULT WITH THE FACT THAT I HAD NEVER ATTEMPTED CREATING AN ANIMATION AT ALL. I SEARCHED A FEW WAYS IN WHICH I CAN CREATE THE ANIMATION THE EASIEST WAY. PHOTOSHOP WAS THE SIMPLEST WAY IN ORDER TO CREATE A SIMPLE ANIMATION / GIF. THE EASIEST SOLUTION SUGGESTED WAS PHOTOSHOP WHICH I RELAISED LATER WAS THE WRONG DESCISION. I STARTED WITH CREATING A TIMLINE SEQUENCE BIG ENOUGH TO FILE SIZE A SMALL INSTGRAM OR TWITTER AD. I HADNT PLANNED OUT WHAT I REALLY WANTED TO PUT IN EACH FRAME OF THE GIF OTHER THAN MY MAIN NARRATIVE WHICH WAS TO INFORM YOUNG PEOPLE THE EFFECTS ON THEM AFTER THE VOTE ON BREXIT AND LEAVING THE EU. I WANTED TO MAKE IT QUITE PERSONAL AND SHOW OF THE IMPORTANCES OF SOMETHINGS THEY MAY NOT HAVE AFTER THE EXIT. . MY MUTIPLE ATTEMPTS TO CREATE THE SHORT GIF/STOP ANIMATION DID FAIL, ON THE BASIS THAT IT WAS I JUST COUDLNT GET THE VIEDO TO FLOW THE WAY IT SHOULD AND SEEMED TO SIMPLE FOR A GIF. ALTHOUGH I DIDNT SUCESSFULLY CARRY THIS PARTICULAR PRODUCTION OUT VERY WELL , I STILL INTEND TO CARRY ON TRYING TO PEFECT IT AS EXPERIMENTING IS KEY, WITH TRYING NEW PROGRAMMES TO RECIEVE DIFFERENT OUTCOMES

PRACTIONER INSPIRATION

SISTER CORTIA KENT

Corita Kent was an artist with an innovative approach to design mixing the creative arts with education, allowing for an all time purpose in her design work. Corita’s work reflected her own personal concerns about poverty, racism, war and other wordily affairs, and her messages of peace and social justice continue to resonate with audiences today. Her work evolved from figurative and religious doings to images and slogans allowing for an almost pop culture affair to join within. Her style through time evolves with drippings into abstract and expressionism to the pop art movement that developed back in the 1960′s which was definitely a major influence in the designs. Its mostly down to the fun typography, shapes and experimental use of bright colours which drew me to Corita’s work. The play of all major elements together allows for a cohesive and diverse print and the stripping back of backgrounds and heavy embellishments really allows the designs to breathe. I enjoy the fact that there wasn't much thought and planning into the prints as she really supported spontaneity in design and creativity which is something to note when creating a live outcome.

JAMIE REID

Jamie Reid is probably best known for this work producing several album covers for the band “The Sex Pistols”, including the portrait of the Queen and the Never Mind the Bollocks cover. His work, features allot of letters cut from newspaper headlines in the style of a ransom note which is a theme I tend to use in the majority of my work and a style which came very close to defining the image of punk rock in the UK back in the 1970′s and 80′s. Its the faux-ransom notes lettering and iconic defacement on national pop cultural images which allows for a intriguing and an exciting feel when face to face with the artworks. Reid’s style has been a major influence in my own personal style of work for many years and almost helped me to discover and find my own way to put a stamp of things. This play on sovereignty and a politics are themes I am definitely looking into including in my own final productions as the overall title a protest, and adding a somewhat ‘radical’ approach to this can lead to a potential successful protest.

PRIMARY RESEARCH

WOMEN POWER PROTEST

Birmingham City Museum & Art Gallery 

Marking a century since the first women won the right to vote the “Women Power Protest” ties together both contemporary and modern artworks and collections to celebrate female artists who have explore the themes of social and protest identity in their mediums of work. Although the protest exhibition has no correlation to my chosen project I still visited the gallery to have somewhat of an  understanding on how and what makes a protest, and how I could run my own, and basics of running one smoothly and successfully. The exhibition does not shy away from difficult issues and has a very direct way of portraying the chosen message, being very abrupt and straight forward at times which is needed in order to create a big impact within a protest. I mark the overall exhibition as though provoking and opens a new door to women as artists who deserve the recognitions.
