By the way one direction inspired an entire generation of young teens to become artists, readers, writers, musicians, animators. 14 year olds were hacking into security cameras. Do you genuinely understand how hard that is? I literally have a tech degree and i still view hacking as too complicated. 14 year olds were in literal stem to watch one direction buy a bottle of shampoo. They have genuinely altered the courses of so many people's lives in terms of careers and long term hobbies. It was never just the music. I literally started reading by reading fanfiction. I am now a very active reader of many genres. I got a fucking tech degree because i wanted to see how it was done. Like its so unbelievably crazy. And they were massively bullied by the media and the rest of the world. They were ridiculed by the music industry. They were the biggest boyband on the planet and the only one that went as global as they did and they had them parody their own song 3 seperate times. They were never nominated for grammys as a group. They were genuinely never taken seriously and they changed the courses of young womens lives.

Just after sunset during the Minneapolis memorial for Liam, someone released five red heart balloons. As they rose up together, one balloon rose higher and faster while the other four seemed to hang back sending it off. To me, the moment felt like these lyrics

Liam may be gone, but we will continue to find him in many ways as we carry on his memory.

I keep having this one agonizing thought.

Unless you were really into British pop music-based television, the introduction to One Direction for almost everybody in the world was "What Makes You Beautiful" - and those opening lines, no matter how memed or overplayed they became during that nostalgic autumn of 2011 - are Liam's vocals.

Whether you ended up being a stan with posters all over your walls who cried in your middle school bathroom when Zayn left or you were someone that got swept up in pop culture hatred and called them annoying or overrated - that song was likely the first impression One Direction ever left on you.

That means Liam is the first thing the world ever heard of One Direction as a group, so for him to be the first thing to leave, truly permanently leave the world behind, makes the gaping hole feel that much larger.

child stars dying young directly or indirectly as a result of fame-related trauma is just so especially sad. for me it’s the tragedy of how kids don’t really know what they’re signing up for when they ask to be famous, especially back in 2008. liam’s mistakes, addiction, and bad decisions, are all so inarguably tied into his career and the carelessness of the entertainment industry. the 31 year old man that just died is the same 16yo boy that was given drugs and alcohol to keep him quiet while he was being overworked and exploited. corey haim, river phoenix, judy garland, and so many more. you can think what you want about liam and have your own opinions, but don’t lose sight of the larger picture that he was a victim of.

Hey just a note about grief.

At some point, and for some of us it will be very soon while for others of us it will be a long time from now, you will start to feel like you want to listen to One Direction, or to Liam’s music, and simply enjoy it. You’ll watch This is Us or San Siro and you won’t be in mourning, you’ll be enjoying yourself. You will look at Liam and think only happy thoughts, and you will know that he is gone but in that moment it won’t hurt the same.

And you may, in that moment, feel supremely guilty about it.

I need you, when it happens, to take those feelings of guilt and let them go.

Liam, I am so certain of this, would not want you to feel guilty for not feeling sad. Liam, with his big heart and his joy and his happiness, would want you to take delight in what he made for you. I know and believe this with everything in me.

We have all suffered a deep loss that will change everything, it will change how we view our fandom time forever, to varying degrees. But someday, your heart will say, I want to let life in. And you should let it, when that happens.

Grief is a fickle thing, but some of us will approach a moment when we are tempted to take joy in Liam’s life, joy in what he has given us. Let yourself feel that joy, when it happens. Let Liam’s memory be a happy one when you can.

what really gets me, after the initial shock, is the fact that what i remember as a group of bright eyed, over ambitious kids are now grown adults who are able to navigate the complexity of this situation.

we not only grew up with the boys, but we grew up with each other.

a lot of us have careers, families, a whole life far detached from the one we used to dedicate to a group of five boys (and their families, hairstylist, bodyguards… even a pigeon). and in one moment, simultaneously and instantly, all those memories came pouring and flooding back.

I brought my kids up on 1D - my choice, not theirs but they indulged me and it became our thing together. Forever Young was my favorite song from back in the Alphaville days. I collected versions to listen on repeat when I struggled to get back to writing. I found the 1D version after they lost TXF and that was it for me. Liam’s voice on the opening line just tugged me in and I slipped into the fandom and never left. It’s been 13 years and I am so grateful for all the music and the memories he and the boys made.

It was my family and 1D that helped pull me out of postpartum depression, that comforted me when my father died, and that helped me focus enough to write my books. We truly are the greatest team that the world has ever seen. Liam will always be a part of that team. Gone too soon but never forgotten. #foreveryoung #forevergrateful

I know it’s been 14 years and a million things since then but I want an inquest into the X factor. I want to know what was in place to protect the minors on the show, I want a report on the abuse and coercion and I want people to be held accountable.

1000%. katie waissel and rebecca ferguson's tweets sum it up well. Everyone involved around that show need to be investigated and there needs to be some concrete changes in how reality show contestants are handled and further protection and care in place for musicians/actors/performers from their labels/management.

I truly believe we wouldn't be needing to have this awful conversation right now had things had been managed differently from the very start.
