Megafauna Keepers: Maybe if I wish and hope really hard, I’ll get this species I want to work with here!
Bird, Herp, and Invert Keepers: I went on vacation to another zoo and saw this species and they sent it to us, this other species was an extra that someone didn’t want, and this last species I ordered online with free shipping

Not a zoo now, but a circus.
Personally I don’t care for circuses - the environment and situation the animals are shown in doesn’t appeal to me at all, I think it’s more of an archaic cultural tradition than something we really need, but this still makes me sad.
Ringling Bros has been under the exact same malicious lies as SeaWorld, dolphinariums and zoos. The same “arguments”/lies, from the same people and the same organizations. I think this is only further proof - if indirect - that SeaWorld, unless they change something soon, is on its last breath.
And I go back to the article I wrote recently.
What is most disappointing however is what I see from SeaWorld supporters on this - “good, those animals were being abused” - not realizing it’s the exact same logic and arguments anti-SeaWorld and anti-zoo people use, to slander what they, the SeaWorld supporters, love and support.
This is not the time to stand divided.
Zoo supporters see Shamu shows going away, and say “good, I love zoos but SeaWorld sucks”. SeaWorld supporters see circuses with wild animals going away and say “good, I love SeaWorld but circuses are bad.” Then maybe some circus people say “no one should be able to own exotic animals at home.” An owner of exotics say “I want to keep my foxes, but no one should be able to keep lions and tigers”. Someone else says “you shouldn’t be able to own exotic mammals, but reptiles are fine”. Someone then says “I love my lizards and small snakes, but no one should be able to keep venomous species or large constrictors”.
And on and on it goes. Endless division.
“Take them, but don’t take ME!”
Well you’re wrong. They’re coming for all of you.
And the more you stand there slinging mud at each other - you’re on THE SAME SIDE, for crying out loud - the easier it will be for them to come and pick you off, one by one.
Ban elephants in circuses. Ban elephants in zoos. Ban whale shows and breeding. Ban all “rare” exotics from private ownership. Ban large snakes from being moved across state lines. Mandatory spay and neuter laws for dog and cat owners. Tighter and tighter restrictions around every area of animal keeping.
“It’s just another little detail” you say, “it’s harmless, in fact it might do some good”. But you don’t see how they are chipping away at you with a pickaxe.
What’s next? Ban big cats in zoos? Ban dolphins and sealions? Ban dog shows? Put on extremely stringent regulations for dog and cat breeding, so that it’s virtually impossible to do legally? Ban all common exotics (hamsters, chinchillas, corn snakes, budgies, aquariums)? Making regulations on livestock and farming so tight that small-scale, humane farms have to close down everywhere?
And on and on it goes.
If you think they’ll leave it at cetaceans, elephants and apes, you are incredibly naive and have not been paying attention.
We need to support organizations like NAIA - bring in more suggestions if you have them. The answer is humane and ethical animal use, not NO animal use. No need to throw the whale out with the poolwater.

Cairns Aquarium
Type: Aquarium
Country: Australia
Location: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Cairns+Aquarium,+122B+Lake+St,+Cairns+City+QLD+4870,+Australia/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x6978668defaaf1bb:0x3a401d993c56e47a?hl=en-US
Status: Under Construction
Planned Completion: May 2017
The Cairns Aquarium was announced in 2013 and construction started in Decmeber 2014. The aquarium will be located in the tropical city of Cairns, Queensland which is known for being close to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainsforest. The aquarium will house 15,000 plants and animals, many of which are found only in the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest, in 70 exhibits made up of almost one and a half million gallons of water. The aquarium was designed by Peddle Thorp Architects. The aquarium’s exterior walls are “made up of a series of giant “tectonic” plates to symbolise the movement of the earth’s crust over time causing the development of giant land masses and ocean structures in the region that led to the creation of the Far North’s tree covered mountains and the Great Barrier Reef.” The goal of the aquarium’s design is to be recognizable and an iconic destination in Cairns.
