Publication Moodboard:

I created this moodboard as a means to communicate directly the references I will be pulling from when putting together the twelve page publication.

Timeline Poster Iterations:
I reflected on my formative feedback from Karol and made changes accordingly. I Increased the font size & weight for both my headings and my body to increase legibility, smoothed out the joins of the circles with the smooth tool, and refined the colour palette. I also changed the background colour to grey in order to soften the composition which is reflective of Etter’s refined design aesthetic in data visualisation.
I also have created a landscape version of my timeline to include in my publication. This version is the first iteration and I will no doubt be making some changes when it comes to assembly.

A reflection of my learning so far
My journey in Materials & Media so far has led me to feel more confident as a designer. Working through the process of cultivating research, learning practical skills, thinking of ideas, and then executing them to fulfil the brief is immensely satisfying.
I particularly have been enjoying how each course is relative to one another. As I progressed through this paper, I found that there was mutual growth in my Design Studio and Design Research work. Noticing this has given my confidence that AUT is providing a thoughtful program, and I have made the right choice by choosing to study here.
Though I am feeling more confident using the tools provided, I still feel that I am only at the tip of the iceberg and that there’s lots more to extract from the tools we are working with. Although I know that using software is an essential skillset in the modern design industry, personally I would love to explore analogue design methods in more detail during the remainder of my time at AUT.
Overall, I am feeling positive about my learning so far. Studying from home has presented some challenges, but the communication from AUT staff has been clear. This has meant that I know what tasks I must complete and in what direction I should be steering my work. I am deeply looking forward to being on campus and using the facilities that AUT provides. I am feeling excited yet nervous for what’s next in my studies at AUT.

Formative Assessment Submission:
I decided to change my copy font from 字由点字乐圆体 because there I had an issue with spacing and in order to use it I would have to manually kern each individual space between characters. I instead went with Univers Condensed because it had a similar aesthetic, and I widened the kerning to achieve a monospaced feel.

Two attempts at recreating the design. I created the shapes using the elipse, scissor, and line tools, then joined them together and adjusted the anchor points to create curves. Once satisfied with the shape I added a freeform gradient with soft colours in an attempt to match Elena’s work by eye. I am happy with how the second attempt with four bubbles came out.
I added Etter’s work for reference.

I used my analog workbook to explore some ideas derived from Etter’s work. I explored a few more complex formats but they weren’t effective tools for translating a small amount of data.
The concept that I landed on was one from “Emotional Hardware” featuring the joined circles and gradient. My idea is to have each circle represent an institution and have the size of the circle correlate with the amount of time spent studying there. I believe that this will translate the data well and have a strong visual impact due to the simplicity of the design, the free form of the circles and gradients, and the complex study history of Elena Etter.
