he laughed softly – that was what he thought a joke about a girl overdosing on caffeine deserved, a soft laugh, but no overture – and then he realized that she might be serious and was blank. “uh,” he said shortly, and looked to the room for guidance. “my condolences? no wait, not the normal one, though. gimme one shot.” he decided to push his luck, and hastily raised the number: “two shots. i’m not gonna die from two shots.” then, feeling he’d done his best, he turned and looked for a seat.

Astoria chuckled and looked at the male who stood in front of her. The young female shook her head carefully and smiled when he said his apologies. “Honestly, it’s fine, love. I –– I just read about it. Luckily, none of my friends have moved on because of too much coffee,” she said and laughed as she pushed her hair out of the way, towards the back of her ears. Two shots, I’m not gonna die from two shots. “Fine. Two shots.” Astoria did as he asked, and gave the coffee two shots and a couple of minutes later, the salad came out and Astoria took it from the cook and put it on the desk in front of him, “Here you go.”

Ben smiled, thinking of his past with Astoria and her family. His friendships had always been strained by him not being in school and working so often, but her family always made it seem easy. It was nice to take a breather, that’s what she reminded him of. Feeling crushed and out of breath, and being able to breathe again. “You’ll get the bill, right? It’s only polite,” he told her with a teasing grin. He nodded at her explanation, dutifully avoiding looking at her blushing cheeks. “School’s more important than money,” he told her plainly. “I’m not shocked by that at all,” he agreed. “What’s your post-school plan?”

You’ll get the bill, right? It’s only polite. Astoria laughed and hummed softly, rubbing her lips together while looking at her old friend. School’s more important than money. Astoria looked at Ben and hummed softly, letting her tongue slide across her bottom lip. I’m not shocked by that at all. She rolled her eyes and chuckled gently, tilting her head a little to the side which resulted in her hair falling over one of the shoulders instead of both. What’s your post-school plan? “My post-school plan? Right at it with the tough questions, huh? But, I don’t know? I really want to work teaching kids astronomy some day for sure,” she said and sank her teeth into her bottom lip as she leaned forward, nodding her head. “What about you? What’s up in the magnificent Ben’s life?”

while most people were heading off to work, aleks was just finishing his shift from the club. needless to say he was exhausted. his usual routine was to head off to the cafe to get a cup of coffee for his walk back home. sure, it would result in keeping him up slightly longer – but without the caffeine his walk home was unbearable. on the plus side, he got along with one of the employee’s that worked there. “mornin’, astoria.” he greets her with a yawn as he pulls out his wallet from his pocket. “eh, black should be alright. dump a whole lot of sugar in there too.” his coffee orders were never consistent and largely depended on his mood. besides, he would get bored with ordering the same damn thing everyday. 

Mornin’, Astoria. Lifting her gaze, Astoria smiled gently as her eyes met Aleks’. “Morning, sweetheart. How are you today?” she asked and smiled brightly at him. Eh, black should be alright. Dump a whole lot of sugar in there too. “Okay, black and lots of sugar. Got it!” She turned around on her feet and licked her lips absentmindedly. “Sit down! Please! Anything else I can get you?” she questioned and smiled brightly as she looked over her shoulder. “I can make you a sandwich if you want to? Eggs and bacon, maybe?”

Ben pulled the plate closer to him and reached across the counter to grab a bottle of hot sauce, he absently spun it before pouring some of it on his sandwich. He looked up, eyeing Astoria as she prepared his coffee. He liked his food spicy, but he also liked having something to wash the spice away. “I’d like to see him soon though, maybe you could orchestrate a dinner date for us? What kind of discount could you get us here?” He asked her with a wink  and a laugh. He nodded at her explanation, his mouth dipping into a frown. “That’s weird,” he muttered. “Is this your usual shift? Maybe I’ll make a habit of stopping in.”

Astoria watched as Ben reached across the counter to grab a bottle of hot sauce, before pouring some of the content on top of his sandwich. She shook her head and laughed softly as it was a pretty weird thing to do but then again, everyone had their little quirks. I’d like to see him soon though, maybe you could orchestrate a dinner date for us? What kind of discount could you get us here? “A dinner date? I –– I think I could make that happen,” she spoke and laughed gently as she looked at Ben. She remember perfectly how good friends Ben and her brother was. They were quite close and she remember always wanting to join them for parties and whatnot, especially as she used to have a crush on Ben, but her brother didn’t want her around as she was his sister and she was the youngest one. Is this your usual shift? Maybe I’ll make a habit of stopping in. Her cheeks turned a light pink and she shrugged her shoulders. “I work a little bit all over the place, actually, but usually this is my normal shift. I’m in college as well, so I’m not able to work as many morning shifts. Astronomy. I’m sure you’re not shocked by that,” she said and giggled softly.

her heels click against the ground as she hurries herself through the street, just hoping to get somewhere warm already. it isn’t the first time she gets out of work when the evening has already fallen; and just one look at her it is easy to see she might’ve had an stressful day. then again, when wasn’t stressful in the city hall? she loves her job and all she does, but it is no lie how it drains her energy. it doesn’t take long until she finally reaches the café, taking a deep breath and feeling very comfortable with the warm air, the coffee scent being undeniable, filling her lungs. looking down as she chases for her wallet, she hears the known voice and lifts her head immediately, opening a big smile at the younger girl. “weren’t you taking the afternoon shifts, miss baker?” she asks with a small chuckle, finally finding what she was looking for. “a hot chocolate, please,” the order is different than usual, but after so much coffee during the whole day, it was for the best get something else. putting down the money on the counter, the woman smiles, tilting her head. “how have you been? it feels i haven’t visit you in forever…”

Weren’t you taking the afternoon shifts, miss Baker? A wide smile appeared on Astoria’s lips as she heard her friend’s voice fill the space. Lifting her gaze, she locked her eyes with her friend from the past, Brianna. A hot chocolate, please. Nodding her head, she grinned and turned around on her heels, before making her way over to the machine, pressing the button and filling the empty, white and rather large, cup. “And, do you want cream on top?” Astoria questioned and rubbed her lips together happily as she glanced over her shoulder and looked at Brianna, happy that the other, slightly older, female had come along. She moved over and put the hot chocolate down, shaking her head when Astoria put money down on the counter. “It’s on the house,” she spoke and winked as she leaned backwards, the lower part of her back pressing against the frame of the counter behind her. How have you been? It feels I haven’t visit you in forever. “I know, it’s been way too long. Work’s been insane lately, we should definitely have a girl’s night in soon though. I’ve missed you!”

Ben sits with his head in his hand and watches Astoria with a small smile. He had been friends with her brother, during school and after had even kept in touch after Ben had dropped out. He nodded at her comment and checked his watch, seeing he still had about thirty minutes. “I’ll eat it here, I think,” he told her. Ben thought for a moment, about when the last time he had seen Leo was. He ran a hand through his beard and shook his head slowly. “No I haven’t seen him,” he admitted. “I’ve been working like crazy. Speaking of,” he said perking up. “Why have I never run into you here? How long have you worked here and I just avoided you?”

I’ll eat here, I think. “Perfect,” she reached out and grabbed a tiny, white plate, putting the sandwich on top of it before walking over to where Ben sat. Putting it down, she pushed it forward so that it rested in front of him. She smiled brightly and tilted her head a little to the side as she walked backwards and towards where the coffee machine was, as he had also asked for a drink. No, I haven’t seen him. I’ve been working like crazy. Astoria nodded as she definitely understood where Ben came from. Astoria had been working a lot lately so she could definitely relate. Why have I never run into you here? How long have you worked here and I just avoided you? Astoria pushed her hair away from her face and shook her head lightly as she stuffed the cup underneath the machine, pushing the correct button. “I –– I have worked here for a while, yes, but we probably just missed each other...”

Ben, in a odd instance, had overslept this morning. His usual routine had him up by seven at the latest, he had always been a morning person. This gave him plenty of time to get ready, have breakfast, and check on his mother if he had to, before he needed to be at work. Sleeping in, usually wasn’t factored in. Maybe he had had one too many last night, all he knew was he was that the extra couple of hours sleeping left him disoriented. Rather than waste time making breakfast, he figured he might as well grab it on the way. Stopping into Cafe Pomme, grinning when he saw Astoria. “Hey,” he greeted. “Can I just grab an iced coffee with hazelnut or whatever?” He asked her. “And a breakfast sandwich if you have one.” He set his gym bag on the floor and moved to sit down. “How have you been? I haven’t seen you in while.”

Lifting her gaze, a wide smile appeared on Astoria’s lips as she saw Ben, her older brother’s friend, enter the tiny café building. She had talked to him once or twice. Hey. Can I just grab an iced coffee with hazelnut or whatever? “Hey Ben, yeah of course you can. Give me a few minutes and I’ll have it with you, okay?” Astoria said and nodded towards the empty seat in front of the counter, signalizing for him to sit down. And a breakfast sandwich if you have one. “Got it,” she said and walked over to where the sandwiches were. “Do you want to eat here or take it with you?” she asked and leaned against the container. How have you been? I haven’t seen you in a while. “I know! It’s been a while, huh? I’m good though, thanks. What about you? Have you seen Leo lately?” she asked about whether he had seen or hung out with her older brother lately.

         he’d never set foot in the cafe before – maybe it was new, maybe not, but he didn’t think he’d even noticed it – but now he was tired and hungry and happy to see it. “yeah. you got any protein powder? and i’ll take… that wrap. the chicken caesar one.” a thought struck him. “how many espresso shots can you fit into one coffee?”

Astoria looked at the male who had entered the shop and she smiled weakly as he spoke. “I’m sorry, we don’t have any protein powder, but we do make a fantastic coffee mixture here? It will wake you up faster than you can blink,” she said and smiled as she turned around on her heels as he asked how many espresso shots she could fit into one coffee. “Once, a girl overdosed on caffeine, actually. She had fourteen single, seven double, shots in one coffee. Her heart couldn’t take it and stopped. So, I’m going to give you a normal one,” she spoke softly as she grabbed a cup and put it underneath the machine. Turning around, she leaned against the counter. “Please, sit. Your chicken caesar will be out in a few minutes,” she spoke and nodded as she tapped her fingers absentmindedly.

↳ OPEN STARTER 

Astoria stood behind the counter, a pen in her hand and her notebook pressed against the top of the counter, located in front of her while she re-wrote down a few things from the lecture she had been to earlier that day as she had a test coming up in a few days. It was a pretty quiet evening and not a lot of customers either. There were two students, a male and a female, sitting in the corner of the room by the window, studying for what looked like a test with four empty coffee cups surrounding them and two plates with half-eaten fries and sandwiches on them. On the other side of the room, two girls were whispering, probably gossiping about something that had happened while they enjoyed a cup of frappuccino each. The familiar bell signalizing that someone new had entered chimed throughout the tiny coffee shop, making her lift her gaze and put her things away. “Hi there, welcome to Café Pomme,” Astoria spoke softly and smiled brightly towards them, “can I get you anything in particular?”

“ – who exactly is paying for all of this?” there was way too much alcohol at the back door of his club for the evening ahead of them. lifting a hand to run through his hair, he caught the eyes of the person before him. “you’re going to have to take it back. this isn’t what i ordered at all.” it wouldn’t take forever for the alcohol to sale in the club at all but it was far too much. 

Astoria excused herself from her group of friends, deciding she needed to get some air. Searching through the club, she finally found a door and exited, which resulted in her ending up in an alleyway. She took a couple of deep breaths as she walked over and leaned back against the brick wall, her head pounding so badly that she almost felt a little sick. Then, all of the sudden, a car showed up and a male jumped out of the driver’s seat before walking to the back of the vehicle, pulling out what looked like a huge amount of alcohol. Astoria raised an eyebrow as he walked over and knocked on the door she had come out from. Swallowing the lump in her throat, she watched at the conversation exchange between the tiny, older-looking man and the younger one, who seemed to be the owner or at least the manager. She bit her bottom lip and watched as the older male spoke in a foreign language, talking about god knows what before he wandered off, leaving the cases of alcohol be on the ground. She pushed herself off the wall and walked over to him, deciding to maybe talk to him and see if she could help in any way. “Hey, uh, excuse me, there has obviously been a misunderstanding here,” she spoke, her voice soft and gentle and as she spoke to the older male, she seemed to be able to convince him to take the excessive cases back.

Sitting back watching the fight in the center of the bar Ezekiel let out a short laugh. He’d been hoping to see something interesting at the dive bar but he hadn’t expected a fight five minutes into being here. But he supposed that was what happened in places like this. “Is this what happens everyday here?” Posing the question to no one in particular he took another drink. “I miss out.”

Honestly, - the whole drinking and going to bars scene - wasn’t really something that she did very often, but her friends had managed to drag her out as the group of girls were celebrating a friend’s engagement. She had excused herself, and gone to the bar to get herself another drink, when suddenly two men had started pushing and shoving each other; words coming out of their mouths slurred, obviously a sign of them having had one drink too many. Shaking her head, she turned and leaned against the counter, her forearms pressing against the wooden top. Trying to catch the bartender’s attention, she waved her hand around frantically but the male seemed to  be preoccupied with a busty blonde on the other side. Rolling her head, she sat down on her chair when she heard a voice speak up. Turning her head around, she looked straight at a dark-haired male, whom she didn’t recognize. “Honestly, I have no idea. This is, believe it or not, my first time here.”

I did these this morning. Astoria looked at the male, then looked down at the plastic container he had slid across the table and she raised an eyebrow at the sight of the burned cookies that laid on display. “Uh,” she spoke quietly and lifted her gaze, locking it with his. I had to eat them anyway because I was at school all day. I may have given my students, I hope no parent will prosecute me later. She laughed and nodded, tilting her head a little to the side as she looked at the lookalike brick on the table. “You –– You want me to try that?” Astoria questioned, her voice gentle and soft. An awkward giggle fell from the female’s mouth and she bit her bottom lip as she lifted the coal black cookie to the height of her mouth. “I’m really sorry, sweetheart, but uh, I think the look of it says it all, really.”
