Abby was in the middle of brushing her teeth when the phone buzzed. She was grateful to be done with her shift. The good thing about working on her floor was that they were pretty well staffed. L&D was a pretty desirable part of the hospital to work in, so they didn't have a lot of call-offs. That meant she was able to get home on time. Abby wasn't looking forward to starting her med school rotations on the other floors; she knew the hours would be much different.

She trotted out to the master bedroom and sighed. Richard still wasn't home. She didn't actually believe that he was working late, but she ... didn't want to consider the other possibility either. Especially not with the conversation she'd had with John Carter today.

She climbed into bed and opened her phone.

[TXT]: So you weren't actually surpervising medical students all day and suffering, as you claimed? That's what you're telling me?

[ TXT ] : are you up? please be up.

[TXT]: I'm up. Still at the hospital. A day's supervising med students is never done.

Abby scrunched up her nose. She was not going to laugh at the first text. No! She was mad at the audacity of this asshole man, coming into her life and making assumptions. The last thing she was going to do was laugh.

Abby sighed and glanced at her watch. She should be getting back on the floor, but she also knew that Rebecca would come and get her if she was really needed. The floor was mercifully quiet right now, which is the only reason she was able to take this break to text this ridiculous (kind) doctor in the first place.

And he was trying to be kind. But she was okay. Her marriage was okay. Or maybe it wasn't. But it wasn't abusive. She knew abusive. She had grown up with abusive. This wasn't that.
