Africa celebrates its extraordinary women

The two groups who were honoured comprised Women of Excellence and the Living Legends. The women of excellence honouraries included former president Nelson Mandela’s widow Machel, Justice Victoria Okobi from Nigeria, former Ghanaian president Jerry Rawlings’ wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, and medical doctors Arikana Chihombori and Juliette Tuakli.

“I accept this award on behalf of African women who die while giving birth, for all women who continue the fight to stop violence against women and on behalf of women across the world who work tirelessly every day to feed their families,” said Chihombori as she accepted her award.

Machel said her award, bestowed on her by other distinguished women, made her remember the women who suffered every day through abuse and rape. She dedicated her award to struggling women in rural areas, and the 32 million girls in Africa who did not have access to education.

“This is also for the Chibok girls who were simply targeted for seeking education. We have to do much more than celebrating, because we are privileged, and privilege comes with responsibility,” Machel said.

Anti-apartheid struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, former Malawian president Joyce Banda, former president of Kenya Jomo Kenyatta’s widow Ngina Kenyatta, former Liberian president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and AU chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma received the “Living Legends” awards.

Konga’s “Self-Fulfill” Model Allows Merchants To Make Their Own Deliveries

Since the launch of the Konga Marketplace in April 2014, over twelve thousand sellers have registered and are actively trading from their stores on Konga.com. And Konga has been hard at work making selling easier for all the registered merchants, including the new complimentary cards customized for them, in partnership with Printivo.

In that vein, Konga has again announced a major upgrade that is set to make selling even easier – the ‘Self-fulfill’ model. The Konga Self-fulfill model launched this week and the platform is now opening up to sellers all across Nigeria as opposed to only sellers in Lagos.

‘Self-fulfill’ basically means that all sellers on Konga.com have the option to adopt more efficient, time-saving methods of shipping their orders directly to customers. With the pay on delivery option in the Self-fulfill model, Merchants can now receive payments directly from the buyer when deliveries are made, ensuring more liquidity for their businesses and better control of their finances; and shoppers on Konga can expect faster and more flexible delivery, with the elimination of some processing requirements that were necessary with the old operating model. Furthermore, delivery charges would now be set by Konga sellers and would be largely dependent on the weight and size of the order.

FAMILY: MUMIA ABU-JAMAL TREATED FOR DIABETES COMPLICATIONS

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) —Family members and supporters of Mumia Abu-Jamal say the former death row inmate was rushed to a Pennsylvania hospital to be treated for complications from diabetes. Abu-Jamal’s wife, brother and lawyers spoke Tuesday outside Schuylkill Medical Center in Pottsville, where he was taken Monday for treatment. They say his blood sugar was dangerously high and he could have slipped into a diabetic coma. Abu-Jamal is a former Black Panther serving life in prison for the 1981 murder of white Philadelphia Officer Daniel Faulkner. His conviction was upheld through years of appeals, but he has gained international support for his claim that he’s the victim of a racist justice system. His family is complaining that state prison officials failed to provide him with proper medical care.
