Gimmee An A!!
AABBA-The Album
Tumblr media
This is funny that this is the first one. My Father loved Abba but I didn’t remember this until recently. I have loved Abba since I was a teenager, and never would have attributed the love with him. I found them elsewhere. In case you have never heard of Abba, quick synopsis. Swedish pop group that began in the early seventies. Consisting of two couples. Heavy on the female synchronized harmonies. Their biggest hit might be dancing queen. Being in the 70’s they were engulfed by the disco scene. But they were more than just a disco group The only hits on this one are Take a chance, The Name of the Game, and Thank You for the Music, which is a dud if you ask me. There is an long sweeping ode to monogamy,One man, One woman, or could be used as one of those right wingers defense of “traditional” marriage, it sure would’ve pepped up some of those congressional debates. All Abba, still a solid album. Came out in 77 and this their fifth album, came out in conjuncture to the movie, Abba: The Movie. I bought this one. I have no idea where.
ABBA- Greatest Hits
Tumblr media
“Greatest Hits” is something is kinda confounding. I am sure this will come up many more times. But, it never seems like this is really the case. For example there are several songs on here and frankly every hits compilation I have ever heard, that I have never heard before and are stinkers. Like they had all these throw away songs, and a way to make sure this album would sell without any effort from the band is to be sure s.o.s. and Mama Mia are on it. Hot cakes!! Ring ring? it’s actually a pretty good abba song, but I do not think that it’s on another album. What do I know? I also purchased this.
Acme- To Reduce the Choir to a Soloist
I bought this when it was new, I am guessing 97..98. Probably at ozone records in downtown Portland (RIP) This is a German metal/noise rock. double bass, lots of noisy jud jud jud, the vocalist is of the higher variety. The album has a very solid start, a sample of R. Lee Ermy’s intro in Full metal Jacket. The lyric insert is a cd lyric insert. This has always got my goat. This is good, if you like this kinda stuff. I am not interested in it at all.
Aesop Rock – Float
Tumblr media
I have so much to say that I will probably end up not saying much at all. This is the first thing I had ever heard by Aesop. It is his Second LP. First with New York producer Block head. This album is flawless. I love it. There is a collaboration with Slug from Atmosphere, as long as I know right from wrong, I’ll be okay, I’ll sing my song. Also Vast Aire from Cannibal Ox makes an appearance. The tuba sample drives me crazy on this song.. I should know what it is but I cannot figure out where it is from. He was still pretty young when making this album which is why he’s able to pull off songs like big bang. Holy hell it’s impressive, the amount of words and syllables he fits into the four four bars is dizzying. Tried to interview the snow but of course he flaked. This, Labor days, and none shall pass are must owns for anyone whom claims to like hip hop. I got this record at Amoeba in SF, 2001. I think.
Aesop Rock - Bazooka Tooth
Aesop Rock - Labor Days
Aesop Rock- None shall pass
Tumblr media
this is going to sound a little hyperbolic… This Album is a masterpiece.I had the digital version for a long time, I didn’t get it in vinyl until about 2009 or so. I got it at Amoeba records in L.A. I don’t know where to begin with this album in particular. It is, in my opinion hos best. It is solid all the way through, still collaborating with Blochead and El-P but also spreading his own production wings as it were. I had a few month period, a winter, although those do not exist here, wherein I listened to this album on a loop for several months and nothing else, I never grew tired of it, to this day. So, if I was forced some sort of top ten, this I suppose would have to be the first entry. Alphabetically speaking. So#1!
Aesop Rock - The Impossible Kid
Tumblr media
This is the lyric masters latest full length release. The second on rhymesayers entertainment since the collapse of DefJux. He had moved from New York to San Francisco where he created Skelethon. He lived around the corner from a friend of mine and I would see him around from time to time. One evening during this period I was on the porch by myself when he came walking by and I had the nerve to say something to him. I don’t have a single recollection of one word of that interaction, no clue of what was said, I believe I was quite drunk at the time. Hoping I didn’t make a complete fool of myself, although I probably did. I had heard he had moved up to Portland. Then my friend who lived there started telling me the same stories about how she would run into him and how he moved into Kimya Dawson’s barn, where he made this album. His first single was about his sorted relationship with art. I related to it pretty heavily. In all, this is by far his most personal and journalistic. He has a song about his cat and about his brothers. Over all a theme of what it feels like for a nocturnal man whom has only lived in large noisy cities to find himself living in the woods. I bought this from the label on mail order.
AC/DC -Back in Black                                                                                             I have nothing to say about this album. I bought it. I am forced to listen to a lot of classic rock radio, where they play a lot of this record a lot. I would die happy never hearing it again. I am sure I bought it, in my youth, very used. Probably in Utah.
Ah-ha- Hunting high and low                                                                                   I have no idea where this came from or the last time I listened to it. I think I tried listening to the whole thing once, but I don’t remember. I have had this thing since the 90′s. I did listen to the hit many times. I am pretty sure I haven’t though since the internet. and now that there is so much 80′s music on the radio now.

Abe’s Analog Analysis
No one wants to read a book here, but this will be long, if you do not want to read the whole thing, the short is I am reviewing thousands of records, skip down to get to the heart of the matter, that was not a Don Henley reference.
I have loved music for as long as I can remember. That’s what most of this is about. My Mother and Father saw the Moody blues when I was in utero and my Mother always said that I danced all the way through the concert, which I have a hard time believing because I never liked the Moody Blues. When I was young one of my favorite things was flipping through my Dad’s records and looking at them all, listening to them with his giant headphones, or with him and dancing around the room. As a kid our house was always filled with music, it fell victim to television later in life, but we aren’t going to talk about that. My Father had the largest record collection I had ever seen until I got to be an adult and I loved them. We had an on running joke that I would get his stereo and all of his records when he died. It was a joke because he was never going to die. June of 2016, one day after my birthday, I was wrong, he died. It is the saddest I have ever felt. There is so much music since then that makes me sob like a foolish child, so many things are attached to so many so many songs and so many memories. The joke manifested itself to be true. I did in fact get my father’s records, except for about 50 which I gave to my sister, along with the stereo system, because she needed it more than me. I went to my parent’s home and boxed up all the records, I am unsure of how many there were, somewhere between 250-500. I now have them, at home, alphabetized, and intermingled with my vinyl collection which I have been working on my self on and off since about 1986. I have decided to go through and listen to every single record and write my two cents about each and every one here, including my own. I will try and clarify this throughout the process, whom each bought what. This, for me, will hopefully be some sort of catharsis, trying to understand my Father, understand myself, and understand what the two things mean in conjuncture. I am going in Alphabetic order, and the may take awhile, so bear with me. If I start to lag about this, get on me, I am on twitter, abefarnsworth. Email me there at the my name at the gmail, feel free to talk to me about any of these entries as well, as well as any NHAZ quarterly business. are you ready? here we go!!
