Joe Bravo was the first Artist that I was ever exposed to. I lived on the very same block in Wilmington as the mural in this video. In 1976, when the mural was being painted, I admired it from afar. For years, I would read, I would sketch, and I would do my homework underneath the mural.
Later, as an adult and as a fellow artist, I became friends with Joe through the L.A. Xicano Art Scene. For many years, it never occurred to me that he was the very same Joe Bravo whose work I admired back in elementary school!
So, for the first episode of Xicano Chronicles, I'm featuring Los Angeles’ own Joe Bravo. Not only known for his Tortilla Artwork but also an artist who has been exhibited and featured domestically and internationally in print and in television.
With my multi-year video project, the Xicano Chronicles, I hope to introduce the next generation to important Chicanx voices. I want to highlight Chicanx Artists, Writers, Curators, and Collectors from the LA art scene through short videos.
Besides creating my own art, I've been behind the lens, in the editing room, and on a couple of occasions, in front of the camera. As an artist who identifies as Chicanx, I'm fully invested. My name is Abel Alejandre and in the spirit of Chicanismo self-empowerment, I'm not waiting for someone else to do this.

My “Vote Bernie” print got into LACMA’s permanent collection!!! BIG THANKS to Britt Salvesen at LACMA, my brother Mat Gleason, and our dear friend and patron saint Greg Escalante for looking out for us! ❤️❤️❤️🙏🏽 Congratulations to my carnal Jorge R Gutierrez and Sandra Equihua for their print!!! . . @matgleason : LACMA just notified me that they have countersigned the paperwork for our donation of two prints in memory of Greg Escalante to their permanent collection. "Vote Bernie" (a portrait of Donny as a clown) from 2016 is a print by Abel Alejandre and "Lucha" (a portrait of AOC) from 2019 is a print by Jorge R. Gutierrez with character design by Sandra Equihua. Abel printed his own work. Jorge's was printed by Sean Hernandez of Press Friends in Chinatown. Both prints are number 55 in their respective editions - Greg was born in 1955. A big thanks to Britt Salvesen at LACMA for making this happen and to the institution for accepting politically-charged work by artists from underrepresented backgrounds. Greg was a big booster of Abel and the two curated a show of Chicano art down in San Diego in the Spring of 2017. Greg brought Jorge into the art world and gave him his breakout solo show in 2016. As of today it's all a little part of art history now. . #museum #artcollection #print #printmaking #lacma #get_imprinted #woodblockprint #lines #carving #chicanoart #monochromatic #ink #inkonpaper #xilografia #grabado #art #kunst #arte #studiotime #chicano #studiolfe #chicanoart #xicanoarte #xicanx #chicanx #latinx #share https://www.instagram.com/p/CHRWCodlRV-/?igshid=1mpnf3pkohr4y
