See this is driving me insane. this fucking comment is why i couldn't sleep the other night.

see hornet didn't NOTICE anything out of place. she specifically says "[everything] was here." Just covered in ash and dust.

Is that what is odd? That in a city in ruins, this one place was perfectly preserved? Or that she didn't even care to comment on the burnt painting and it's ash everywhere? She knows the ash is present-she mentions it.

So was Hornet present when the painting was burned? Or did she break into the apartment after Valleri left? Was Hornet the one who burned it? Since it must have happened either shortly before Valleri recorded the message or sometime after, as the ashes were never cleaned up.

wait fuck she said the plant is new hold on.

I wonder, was the plant added before or after Valerri left? Was it too covered in ash?

'Pale' bark. A representation of the pale king and the white lady? Covered in black ash this feels like foreshadowing the creation of the vessels. Life tainted with destruction etc. etc.

ctrl + F for the win. There is pale bark growing in the locked office in the Soul Sanctum, mentioned immediately after Tusk finds the notes on Valleri.

There's ALSO pale bark on the coffee table in Luriens... room? office? wherever the fuck they are where chance is taking a nappy nap.

hhhh pale bark is mentioned exactly as "a small potted tree of glowing Pale bark."

something fucky is happening here.

Perhaps this is the PK's equivalent to the radiance's crystal shards? A small piece of himself that can be used to influence and surveil? To watch a known loose cannon? To keep an eye on a dreamer? Was the plant in the office a method of surveillance on the scholar studying Valleri, or a method by which the scholar observed Valleri?

Or is it something else completely? Something given to those highly regarded by the pale king or perhaps the white lady? A small piece of divinity rewarded for those who have done a great deed? Lurien sacrificed himself as a dreamer, and Valleri was regarded as a hero and also subjected to perhaps the chaotic little girl ever. idk who the scholar was supposed be, but was clearly involved in highly classified research that PK was very invested in.

what does it mean. what are we building to.

my thoughts as I read the new (6 months old) chapter of ethnoentomology bc i said would live blog it and this is least annoying way i can do so.

however... how could he think anything else really. he is all for blaming the radiance for everything.

i'm feeling a delicious mix of "can i even trust my own thoughts" mixed with Chance trying to separate what was him versus what was other.

What happens when (if) he manages to separate what actions were wholly him with no outside influence? What will he regret? What will he desperately try to justify?

How would he even determine what is him and what is the influence of the radiance? He has no memory of past actions to compare against. He can't necessarily even trust the memories he does have, they're full of hallucinations, gaps in memory where he doesn't know what he did. If it was "him" that did it. AAAAAAAAAAAUGH

The spirit of a fic possessed me and thus this thing was born. Based on the amazing artwork by @elsa-fogen who originally was inspired by a comic by @abombihoney

While the idea of what happens to Charlie in the beginning is largely the same as their works, I chose to expand on the idea and took creative liberties on how she got there. I hope you all enjoy it!

Official summary: Alastor comes to collect on that favor. Time for Charlie to truly feel what it means to Smile~!

Warnings: Blood and Injury (mostly at the beginning, the rest is fairly tame)

The way charlie is clinging on Alastor for comfort- and alastor is giving it!

Charlie IMMEDIATELY trying to explain her actions! She KNOWS she's done something Vaggie won't approve of

i love how alastor is very clearly riling up vaggie and playing with her. He lets Vaggie knock him down, he lets her stab his shadow; we know he can deflect angelic weapons- and when he retaliates, well he's only defending himself, isn't he?

But he stops as soon as charlie asks- unlike Vaggie. God I can just see how this sets up Alastor to replace Vaggie as Charlie's main confidant. Vaggie is set up to look aggressive, not willing to listen to reason. Someone who doesn't believe that Charlie is capable of making her own decisions.

Yet Alastor was listened to her, performed painful, delicate magical procedure on her as gently as he could, physically comforted her- a very rare gift that few ever see, much less experience. And when she called for him to stand down? He did so- without question.

Oh and Vaggie's guilt at the end- she must think it's all her fault! If only she and Charlie had the same closeness they did before the trip to heaven. If only Adam hadn't revealed the only secret she's ever had. If only she'd had the courage to tell Charlie sooner. But she didn't and now her girlfriend has turned to one of the most dangerous people in hell- and was instantly taken advantage of. And it all her fault.

I love how Charlie is being positioned like a marionette mid performance, and she is very clearly incredibly uncomfortable-- but she's not actually trying to fight against it. She is not pulling away or trying to hide, she's looking directly at Alastor, watching him as he stitches her new confidence in place.
