Go ahead and try it. See how quickly I whip that scrawny ass.Â

Caden giggled and bit his tongue to keep from laughing too hard. Not because he thought Jesse was being unreasonable, but because he agreed with him but he knew sometimes his reactions to things came off wrong.Â
He grinned back at him. âTheir names are Henry Chavez and Jake Brown. They think theyâre cool cause theyâre upperclassman, but theyâre not shit.â He waved his hand dismissively. âEver wonder why theyâre just guarding the stupid ammo shelter and not doing something cool and fun? Itâs because they suck and theyâre assholes.âÂ
He glanced at Jackie again who obviously wasnât getting his cues to leave them alone. âYou can leave,â he said again. âYou probably wonât fit so thereâs no point trying.â He tossed the grate to the side and peered through the little metal vent. âWe just gotta crawl through then we can go look at all the guns.âÂ
aborderlinenightmare:
âHahah, yeah a lot of people say that,â Caden said, grinning like he was proud of the fact. âMy dad always says âyou never wanted to talk at all when you were little! Now we canât get you to shut up!â.â He laughed and pulled Jesse off in a new direction. âThe guns are this way. Mineâs the coolest! My dad bought it for me. I have five but the other four are at home.âÂ
He stopped suddenly and turned to Jackie, remembering he was with them. âYou donât have to follow us,â he said, then turned back to Jesse. âDo you have any guns yet? Itâs okay if you donât, the school provides them but you can bring your own from home too.â
The shooting range was accompanied by a large adjacent building marked âARSENALâ. Two dracs lounged against the bolted metallic door with bored looks on their faces. âIâm doing a tour, let us in,â Caden said.Â
âFuck off hobbit,â one of them scoffed. Neither adjusted their position, unintimidated by the preteens and their scrawny chaperone.Â
âUhm, you do know who Iâm giving the tour to right?â Caden sneered. He looked to Jesse, suddenly smug, and pointed to him. âJesse Dereleth. Ring any bells?âÂ
âO-Oh,â the other drac said, eyes wide. âY-You donât mean?â
âYeah,â Caden said with an imperial lift of his chin. âThat Dereleth.âÂ
âWow,â they looked at each other, silent for several moments, then both cracked smiles and snorted. âYeah I donât care,â the second drac said. âYouâre not getting in here without one of your superiors.â
Caden frowned and challenged them with an intense gaze which they easily countered. After a tense moment he sighed and grabbed Jesseâs hand again. âFine. Come on Jesse.â As soon as he pulled the other boy away he could hear the dracs talking distractedly to one another. âCome on.â He strode off around the long side of the building and scanned the horizon. âCoast is clear,â he hummed, crouching by a grate set into the wall. âLucky for you I know another way in.â He pulled a knife from his pocket and flicked it open, beginning to work on the screws on the ventâs frame.Â
Jesse watched Caden working, annoyance simmering in his blood. He shoved his hands into his pockets, squeezing them into little fists as he glared to himself. âThat was bullshit,â he finally said after the first screw came loose. âI thought being a Drac was all about respect. That was so stupid. My brother was great. He did so much for those assholes and theyâre gonna act like that doesnât matter? Assholes.â
He fumed for another few minutes before he gave the wall a little kick. âAssholes,â he huffed again. âIâll show them⌠When I make it big, Iâm gonna come after them. I wonât forget their faces. Teach them a lesson⌠assholesâŚâ

Jackie frowned, Cadenâs energy immediately grating against the more sluggish melancholy of his own demeanor. He flinched when he took his brotherâs hand as if it were his own, driven even more uncomfortable by the suddenness of it all. As he warily watched the two, he allowed himself to walk a little slower, shoving his hands deep into his pockets as he hovered behind them, hoping they wouldnât get into any sort of trouble.Â
Jesse allowed himself to be pulled along, but he was too busy glancing around in every direction, trying to take in the sights of the Academy, to really listen. When he sensed that Caden had taken the smallest breath, he turned to look at him, fixing a big smile on him. âYou talk a lot,â he announced breezily. âI wanna see where they put the guns, can we go there first?â
âHahah, yeah a lot of people say that,â Caden said, grinning like he was proud of the fact. âMy dad always says âyou never wanted to talk at all when you were little! Quiet. Listen, steady your arms. This elbow goes here. Draw the string so your fingers are right under your eye-- Straighten your back, you keep slouching--
Iâm not slouching!Â

...Bullseye! I did it! I did it! Iâm the best! Heheheh.Â
