Finally bothered to watch S13 so here's something I noticed

Elemental Energy is similar to the way spiritual energy works, where both the person and their surroundings exert that energy in a two-way flow connection.

In martial arts like Aikido, one is taught to take in and harmonize the energy (ki) to redirect and diffuse the strike peacefully without brute force. Similar concepts exist in Chinese martial arts as well, especially in Tai Chi. In a way, in the past where the ninja were told to connect with their elements, they were the ones tapping into the elemental energy in their surroundings, but when Cole was quite literally surrounded by rock and earth, he HAD to take in and harmonize - become one with the earth. That's why it was such an important part of the season.

Cole's unlocking of the Burst wasn't just because he remembered the promise he made. It was because he remembered the significance OF the promise. Returning to his roots deep in the Earth as the son of Lilly to recall that he had only come this far because he always lived by his promise to never let cruelty and injustice go unpunished.

His mother lives on within him, in that promise that shaped his very being as a person, a friend, a son, everything he is.

And I think that's beautiful.

Welcome back to Absurd Ninjago Details today we are exploring the weird flower crest Wu wore a lot in the early seasons.

Yes. This:

This crest is the same as the ones in these pictures

Implying that this is the "family" crest of sorts - FSM's crest. This is supported by noting that in Ninjago canon, up to end Season 2 at least, Wu nearly always has this crest somewhere on his outfit, while Garmadon does not.

It is symbolism that Garmadon has broken away from the family - and exactly as we see in the mini-movies of 2011? Samukai taunts Garmadon about his "pathetic little brother Wu", only for Garmadon to respond with "That name no longer holds any meaning to me".

In S3, Sensei Garmadon has a unique part of his design that is consistent between S3 and 4: the gold badge. It looks relatively similar to the family crest at first glance, but closer inspection will reveal that it is a different crest entirely.

This is the crest of Garmadon's family, and his purification was symbolic of rebirth. He wears it as a badge on his scarf in S3, and as a belt closure in S4. Despite this, he honors his past history and heritage through the form of the writing on the robes - a condensed version of what is on the purple robes he wore pre-Underworld exile.

Honestly, it's quite a small detail that I'm somewhat certain the writers never quite intended to think too much about, but meanings are found in everything, no?

In any case, I would likely headcanon Wu's crest as based on that of the lotus, symbolizing purity, enlightenment and origin.

NS13 Translations (S13E2 The Darkness Approaching)

Jay: Ha! What did I tell you? It’s so cool, right?!

Nya: I’ll admit, I didn’t even believe such a place even existed at first, but I never thought it would be so beautiful!

Wu: Shintaro Kingdom’s Ivory City… unbelievable!

Hailmar: Your Majesty, King Vangelis. The famous ninja of Ninjago have arrived in your presence.

Vangelis: Welcome, welcome! I’m very pleased you have accepted my invitation to our Kingdom! It is a great honor!

Wu: We too are greatly honored to meet the King of Shintaro himself.

Vangelis: Well, I am only a ruler in title. It is the people who are the spirit of the land itself.

Vania: Oh! They’ve arrived!

Vangelis: This young woman is my daughter, Princess Vania.

Vania: You are my idols! I’ve heard of all your grand adventures! It was actually I who had requested that we invite you for my birthday celebration!

Cole (visibly smitten): It is a great honor to meet you, your highness.

Vania: So you really have gone to Hiroshi’s Labyrinth? Zane: Yes, that is correct.

Vania: And took part in the Tournament of Elements?

Kai: Ah..hah… the story behind that one is not simple.

Vania: Oooh! I want to hear all of your tales!

Cole: Well… where should we even begin?

Vangelis: Well, perhaps you should all come with me first. Tomorrow will be an extremely busy day.

Vania @ Cole: Cole, ninja of Earth. How does it feel to control your elemental powers? Is it interesting?

Cole: Well… yeah, it’s kind of interesting.

Jay: Huh. That’s odd. The Princess seems to really like Cole. Like sure, Cole is my friend but like… liking him?

Lloyd: That’s true, it’s strange.

Cole: Gwah!

Lloyd: Hey, Cole.

Cole: Lloyd?! How’d you even sneak in?!

Lloyd: ...I’m a ninja, remember? Anyway, I came to remind you to be wary of the Princess. I think she might be lying, she’s got some ulterior motive. All these Princesses, all of the same mold.

Cole: All… princesses? You can’t just group them all together as bad people… wait, are you thinking of Harumi?

Lloyd: W-what?! No! Not at all!

Cole: Well aside from the fact that the only Princess you know is Harumi, it’s not like I have feelings for Princess Vania anyway. We only just met. Don’t worry too much, Lloyd.

Lloyd: Hmph (leaves)

Cole: Dammit that’s enough, Lloyd! Listen- (sees the monster)

Cole and Monster (simultaneously): AAAAAAAAAAH!

Monster: You’re not Lily! (tries to escape)

Cole: Huh? HEy! Get back here!...Huh?

Winged Guards: Sir, are you alright?!

Cole: This place has got to have some sort of concealed entrance… or a switch or something… how else did he get in?!

Hailmar: Er… who?

Cole: There was this purple monster in my bedroom a second ago, it tried to attack me in my sleep!

[Wu grunts, falling off the bed]

Cole: Emergency ninja meeting! Gather at the 47th floor’s hall!

Wu: Cole....

Cole: Oof, sorry, Master Wu. But we gotta get everyone up!

Jay: Ugh… let me get this straight… you woke me up from bed so unceremoniously for this...

Nya: From a big warm fluffy bed…

Jay: -because you saw ONE monster in your room?

Cole: Well yeah! I just said that! He tried to attack me, so I retaliated, but he ran away and disappeared! But the creepiest part is that he has MY MOTHER’S NECKLACE!

Lloyd: Uh, Cole. Are you sure you’re not just imagining things?

Cole: What do you mean?

Zane: I think he means that you might’ve been having a nightmare

Cole: IT’S NOT A NIGHTMARE! I saw it myself, there were pictures of both my parents in that pendant!

Nya: Um… so where is the necklace?

Cole: I don’t know, it’s not with me. The bugger snatched it before he escaped!

Kai: (yawns) Cole, bros. Let’s just go back to bed…

Wu: It must’ve been a dream, Cole. I’ve never remembered your mother ever wearing a necklace with a pendant.

Cole: She wore it, I’ve seen it in the photos! We have to tell the King!

Lloyd: Calm down, Cole. It’s not that we don’t believe you-

Jay: I don’t believe him

Lloyd: -but we are guests, we can’t just wake the King up in the middle of the night!

Kai: Cole, bed.

Wu: We’ll talk about this more in the morning, alright?

Cole: HA I got you now, freaky purple mons- Princess Vania?! Oh gosh I’m so sorry, my mistake, really!

Vania: I heard your conversations earlier, about the little purple monster.

Cole: Ah, dangit. You think it’s just my imagination too, don’t you?

Vania: Actually, I don’t think so.

Cole: Really?

Vania: Of course! When I was little I had an imaginary friend, it was a very clingy purple bugger. I had my suspicions that this imaginary friend has indeed come to life… Come with me, this way!

Vania: Over here.

Cole: The palace gardens?

Vania: This was where we used to play together. I called him my little star. Everyone thought he was just an imaginary playmate I made up. But I’m certain that every time he would slip out from that place… right there! There is a system of underground dungeons under the palace, but for the safety of our people, Father ordered it sealed off from the Kingdom.

Cole: Underground dungeons?

Vania: Back before we settled in this place, it was the territory of a powerful evil sorcerer, he created many cities, dungeons and tunnels underground of the mountains. He’s long gone, but the underground cities still exist. My father prohibits anyone from entering, it’s simply too dangerous.

Cole: Princess, regardless of whether it’s prohibited or not, I have to find out why that bugger has my mother’s necklace!

Vania: Well… alright, let’s go together!

Cole: Where’d you get those?

Vania: ‘Always look forward’, that’s my motto.

Cole: But if we get caught by the King…

Vania: I’m not a little kid, you know. I can make my own decisions.

Cole: Well in that case… we’ll not look back!

Cole: Into the evil sorcerer’s lair!

Vania: There were traditional tales of that sorcerer, Hazza D’ur. Isn’t that creepy? Perhaps everyone had weird names then. Legends say he studied many dark arts - oh look! Train tracks. But I don’t know where they go…

Cole: Uh.. I think we’ll go another way. 

Vania: In any case, long ago, the sorcerer was defeated. But it is said that his remains are still hidden somewhere within these mountains. Perhaps we might find him! Wouldn’t that be exciting?

Cole: er… yeah, exciting.

Vania: Oh, gosh. Look at these fellas. Little star looks just like them.

Cole: That’s right… the bugger that got in my room looked like that too. But who are they?

Vania: I don’t know… but they look so miserable, and they’re all chained!

Skull Sorcerer: WHO IS IT?! WHO DARES TO SLACK OFF AT WORK?!

Vania: Who is that?

Skull Sorcerer: I HAVE WARNED YOU  ALL BEFORE, NEVER STOP WORKING, OR FACE THE PUNISHMENTS! Skull: Punish them! Punish them all!

Cole: I don’t know what’s going on but… but villains won’t escape my justice. And THAT. is definitely a villain. Quick, head back and inform your father, have him summon his troops, and wake up my friends!

Vania: But what about you?

Cole: Well… I’m the Master of Earth, and we’re surrounded by the stuff. I’m like a fish in water!

Skull Sorcerer: The next person who defies me will-

Cole: Hey pal. Nice to meetcha, I’m Cole. I’m a ninja. Heard there was a bad guy here imprisoning and enslaving people, you seen him? Skull Sorcerer: CAPTURE HIM!

Cole: wha? Oh heck no…

Cole: Give me the keys to their chains, or I’m about to get really angry.

Skull Sorcerer: This is no place for you to mess around… now you will see my true powers! Flame of the Skull Sorcerer!

Cole: HUH?! WAIT WHAT’S HAPPENING?!

Skull sorcerer: Flame of the Skull Sorcerer! (maniacal evil laughter)

NS13 Translations (S13E1 - Shintaro)

Lloyd: You're still in the mood for video games?!

Cole: Well I'm resting today, why can't I play some video games?

Lloyd: We've all been good for weeks, this place is a MESS! We've got to do the laundry, sweep the leaves, gather firewood, and let's not even talk about the repairs for the cannon blasters outside the walls!

Cole: Gah... just listening to that list made me tired. You really not gonna have a round?

Lloyd: Did you not hear what I just said? Cole, we've got a lot of things to do. Wait, what game is this?

Cole: Prime Empire, duh

Lloyd: wHAT?!

Cole: What do you mean "what", what's wrong with Prime Empire? 

Lloyd: Oh nothing... except having been trapped in that game only to be turned into an Energy Cube?!

Cole: ....you really need to move on, Lloyd. Plus, it's not dangerous anymore. Unagami and Milton's fixed the issues. Now the game's hella fun! Oooh, I gotta focus on this part, I'm about to clear the level.

Lloyd: Well.... one round won't hurt, right?

[Lloyd jumps onto the couch and starts playing]

Jay: Argh, why are there so many fallen leaves?! We don't even HAVE trees in the monastery.

Nya: It blew in from over the wall, plus we've been away so long. First it was Aspheera, then we were in the Never-Realm and even got stuck in Prime Empire.

Jay: It's gonna take FOREVER to clean up ...unless?

Nya: NOPE, no wacky ideas.

Jay Aw, why not? We could clear the yard in a flash!

Nya: If Master Wu found out we used Spinjitzu to clean the leaves in the yard, he's absolutely going to blow!

Jay: Well he doesn't HAVE to find out, he's been indoors all day with his scrolls!

Nya: Don't be like that-

[Jay does Spinjitzu]

Jay: HELL YEA, HAHAH

Jay: Uh my apologies, Master Wu, I just wanted to clean up faster. Eh? What's wrong?

Nya: What's going on? Why is Master Wu skipping out on an opportunity to lecture you? That's odd.

Jay: You're right, it's like he doesn't even SEE us.

PIXAL: Good morning

Mailman: Good morning

[Wu sighs]

Lloyd: Master Wu? Are you alright? Nya and Jay said you seemed to have something on your mind.

Wu: Huh? Oh, nothing. I'm fine. I'm just studying a scroll.

Lloyd: But you haven't even opened the scroll, you're just staring blankly at the window

Misako: I have noticed that too, Wu.

Wu/Lloyd: Misako/Mother!

Misako: You've been distant lately, like you've become someone else entirely. Do you have something weighing on your mind?

Wu: (sighs) I feel... how should I say this... I feel like I've gotten old...

Lloyd: You? Old? Master, what are you even saying?! You hardly look a day over a hundred years! You're not old at all! Not to mention you're the most amazing martial artist I've ever met, your Spinjitzu is so much stronger than the rest of us combined! Plus you've even defeated everyone at the same time before! You remember that?

Wu: Yes... I do remember. That was interesting.

Lloyd: The reason we can protect the Ninjago of today was because of your teachings, Master Wu. 

Wu: That is why you young people have inherited Ninjago. The missions of late have helped you become independent.

Lloyd: That's NOT how it is!

Wu: Even without me, you've managed to escape the Prime Empire safely, defeat Aspheera, and even saved the Never-Realm. The truth remains that you six no longer need me, Lloyd.

Lloyd: THINGS ARE NOT LIKE THAT!

Wu: It's alright, Lloyd. It is the fate that all mortals have to face eventually. There will come a day when the student, too, has to continue the journey on their own.

//In the Yard//

Kai:  That's just unbelievable!

Nya: You sure there hasn't been a mistake?

Jay: It's real! There's no way it's fake! We're the intended recipients, LOOK!

Lloyd: What's happening? What's that? Is it bad news?

Zane: Well, it isn’t your average news...

Jay: LET'S GO START PACKING!

Lloyd: Huh? What's going on? Did someone find the Pot (of ???) Did Pythor return again? Or my dad? TELL ME!

Mailman: The letter you received is an invitation from the Kingdom of Shintaro.

Lloyd: Shintaro?

Mailman: Mhm!The Ivory City, this sort of thing doesn't happen everyday, how exciting!

Jay: Woohoo, what a cool card!!

Cole: This is the COOLEST card I've ever seen! And it's even fragrant!

Lloyd: Shintaro? What’s... Shintaro?

PIXAL: Shintaro is a mountainous kingdom located in the northern region of Ninjago, separate from the rest of the land. 

Zane: Supposedly speaking, the King of Shintaro rarely sends invitations to their land. Historically, people who were allowed into the Kingdom were few in number.

Jay: I heard it's a beautiful place, the MOST beautiful city in all the land, even. The people there have WINGS!! Haahha! No one could stand a chance!

Lloyd: What... does the invitation say?

Jay : "King Vangelis of Shintaro Kingdom is pleased to invite you to the Kingdom." That's absolutely necessary. "We welcome you" -huh, not bad for vocabulary - "to join in our celebration of Princess Vania's birthday".

Cole: Princess Vania? Who's that?

Nya: The King's daughter, of course!

Zane: Even today, we know little about the Kingdom, even to most it's still just a myth

Cole: Woah, looks like we're gonna have a chance to see things for ourselves!

Nya: Let's gooo!

Jay: I'm gonna go pack!!

Kai: Prepare the Bounty!

Wu: What of this... Shintaro Kingdom were you speaking of?

Lloyd: We've all been invited to go to Shintaro Kingdom to celebrate Princess Vania's birthday. Master Wu, this is a great opportunity to clear your mind!

Wu: I don’t need to clear my mind. I am not going. Misako, PIXAL and I will be staying to help clean up the place.

Lloyd: (whispering to Misako: He's so darn frustrated!) Welllllll you could still pay a visit to that legendary Kingdom? That's a once in a lifetime chance, you know?

Wu: I've already visited so many places of myth and legend in my life. This sort of place, if you've seen one you've seen all. You kids can go have fun or something. You don't need me with you.

Misako: Listen here, old Wu, I've had enough of your brooding all day in the monastery. You will be going with the ninja.

Wu: What's the use of my old bones travelling to some distant land? Mystery and adventure is meant for the young, you should know this better than anyone else.

Misako: And what do you mean by that?!

Wu: I... uh.. I mean... I was saying

Misako: Now listen, Wu. You're not just going to be going with them to Shintaro Kingdom. You're going to play hard, do you understand?!

Wu: But I... uh... Have to feed the chicken! I...

Misako: Do you hear me or not?

Misako @ Lloyd: Well, he's agreed.

Lloyd: Aw Yes! We're all in need of some de-stressing!

Zane: Although my database system can see almost any scenery I want, my words still can't express how scenic this view is!

Jay: I KNOW RIGHT? It's just so... just so... incredibly COOL!

Nya: Such a broad vocabulary, Jay. I'm impressed.

Lloyd: This place really is beautiful, isn't it, Master Wu?

Cole: Yeah, much better than cleaning the monastery, for sure.

Jay: w-wHAT IS THAT?!

Zane: For information, when this kingdom was in its early days, the surrounding mountains were said to house a terrifying species of bats, called the Dire Bats.

Cole: Dire Bats?

Zane: Many historians have debated on the existence of the species for a long time.

Jay: Heehee! It's gotta be some kind of fairytale! (Gets snatched) NOT A FAIRYTALE NOT A FAIRY TALE AaaAAA

Nya: Jay!!

Kai: They're trying to destroy the Bounty! GET LOST, DAMNED BATS\

Cole: I'm coming to get you bro!

Jay: Waaaait- WAiT LeT's Be FrieNds!

Cole: Gyah! You owe me one!

Kai: Jay! Cole! Grab the rope!

Nya: What do we do? How do we fight?!

Wu: Use your elemental powers!

Zane: Master Wu!

Jay: Nya!

Cole: HOLD ON!

Lloyd: BRACE FOR IMPACT!

Nya: How?

Kai: Uh guys? Are you seeing what I'm seeing?

Hailmar: Welcome, esteemed guests. I am Hailmar, the King's retainer. I welcome all of you to Shintaro Kingdom.

Lloyd: You saved our lives.

Hailmar: That is our duty. Dire Bats are hard to fight, which is also one reason why we hardly ever allow visitors from foreign lands. It's for their safety. Well then, let's put aside the earlier scuffle, and let me lead you into the Ivory City of Shintaro Kingdom.

Cole: That city is so... intricate.

Me, staring at Ninjago Taiwan Dub:

Kai's name translates to "the red earth" which is actually quite interesting cause like... scorched lands????

Nya's on the other hand translates to "the crimson flower/violet" like... that's so pretty and cute wtf

Not to mention playing on the commob sibling naming convention that they usually have one or more characters in their given names that are either the same or very similar, in this case the character used for "red" and "crimson" are the same.

Also you guys know how Garmadon and Wu have the title of Sensei right? Or Master in the English dub

In the Japanese dub it's nearly always

Wu-sensei, Garmadon-sensei

But I found something hilarious

Dareth's introduction is a huge joke, he's introduced as Dareth-shishou, where shishou means "Master Teacher" when used by a student.

The Japanese dub loves to rub it in that Dareth is only a self-proclaimed Grand Master

Part 2 of iconic quotes in Ninjago

The Morro edition

We all know that absolutely heartbreaking line at the end of S5 right? Morro's last words?

In English (Curseworld, Part II) he says that

"You can only save those who want to be saved.... goodbye, Sensei"

Implying he sees no purpose in being saved, that he doesn't want to be saved.

In the Japanese dub (最終決戦！マザー•エミネント 'Final Battle! Mother Eminent') Morro actually says

「俺は助け何で望んでない。だから、ほたいくれ... 先生....さよなら...」

Which loosely reads as "I have no hope of being helped. So please.... Sensei... goodbye..."

Alternate translation would be "I don't need anymore from you. That's why... kindly.... farewell, Sensei"

Which is downright depressing. Like, you can clearly see that Morro has given up entirely.

If you thought THAT was bad, check out the Chinese dub (决战诅咒世界 下集 'Battle against Curseworld, Part 2')

Damned Morro literally comes out with this line

你只该拯救真心受教的学生。再见了，老师。

It loosely translates to "You should only save a student who truly wants to be taught. Farewell now, my teacher."

Like, Mr Morro are you okay??? He doesn't even think he deserves to be taught, to be offered redemption in the slightest.

Sometimes I think about that iconic line in S2E18 "Child's Play"

"Fair? Fair isn't a word from where I come from!"

In other regions (specifically both Mandarin dubs and the Japanese dub) they paraphrase it to have the same meaning but it just hits so vaguely differently???

Like

In the Japanese dub (the episode is called 子供の時間 'Childhood') Lloyd actually quotes

"フェア? 生まれてこの方そんな言葉聞いてごと無いぜ！"

Which loosely translates to something along the lines of "Fair? I've never heard of that word in my life!"

It actually sounds a bit angry???

Meanwhile you have the HK Mandarin dub (entitled 小小忍者 'Little Ninja')

where he says "公平?在我的世界里从来就没有公平两个字!" which loosely means "Fair? Fairness is something that doesn't exist in my world!"

And the Taiwan Mandarin dub in the episode 时光倒转 'Reversal of Time' (which I totally recommend over the HK dub because Lloyd's voice in the HK dub is honestly painful to listen to)

The quote reads as "公平?我的词典里从来没有这个词!" Which translates to "Fair? That's a word that never existed in my dictionary!"

And I'm lowkey laughing a little bit because like... that's so dorky???

(Note: I used the "fair" variation of the line because that's what is on the wikia, sorry to anyone who prefers the "fear" variation)
