Which companies have mandatory ISIN applicability?

As previously posted, usually 3 types of companies namely #Listed Company, #Unlisted Public Company, and #Private Company take #ISIN connectivity. But important to note is that Private Companies does not have a mandatory requirement to take the ISIN number, while for Unlisted Public Companies,#MCA i.e. Ministry of Corporate Affairs has notified mandatory #dematerialization of its existing securities as well as newly issued securities. This means that Listed Companies, as well as Unlisted Public Companies, have to get ISIN admission done on a mandatory basis.

But there is an exception here if your Unlisted Public Company is: 1) #Government Company or 2) #Wholly Owned Subsidiary Company or 3) #Nidhi Company, then ISIN admission rule is not applicable on mandatory basis which means above mentioned 3 companies are not required to compulsorily apply for ISIN number.

Which companies take ISIN connectivity?

 Usually, 3 (three) types of Companies take ISIN Connectivity:

1. Listed Companies like Reliance, TCS, etc.

2. Unlisted Public Limited Companies like Tata Sons, Nirma, etc.

3. Private Limited Companies like us Accurate.

Shares of Listed Companies are traded on Stock Exchanges like BSE or NSE and that's why they require connectivity from CDSL and NSDL both. But, Shares of Unlisted Public Limited Companies or Private Limited Companies are not publicly traded, so they can take the ISIN connectivity from either CDSL or NSDL or both.

What is ISIN?

International Securities Identification Number or ISIN is a 12 digit unique number, which gets assigned to shares, debentures, units, bonds, warrants, etc. kind of securities.

The ISIN system was launched in the year 1981. In India, it got adopted in the year of 1996 after the Harshad Mehta scam!

In India, the task of issuing ISIN for various securities has been assigned by the SEBI to the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL). But, you may get ISIN admitted for your security from either CDSL or NSDL.
