The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada will be holding the last of its National Events in Edmonton from March 27 to 30, 2014, around the theme of “wisdom.” Students, staff, faculty, and members of the community who cannot attend the events in Edmonton but still wish to take part in the process are invited to gather in the Augustana Campus Chapel on Friday, March 28, 2014 to watch a live stream of the event and participate in a teach-in. Beginning at 8:30 am with opening words from Dean Allen Berger, the day will feature a broadcast of the talking circles, sharing panels and reflections, with breaks from these events for faculty from the Augustana Campus to provide information and ideas that will help us understand the history and legacy of residential schools.

About
Food and nutritional insecurity continues to be a daily challenge for about one billion people around the globe. Sustainable solutions to this challenge involve the use of more appropriate techniques, more equitable institutions, and more efficient value chains linking producers and consumers. The Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF) supports applied research in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East. CIFSRF is funded by Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and Foreign Affairs Trade and Development Canada (DFATD). Projects are implemented through partnerships between developing-country and Canadian research organizations. The objectives of the Food Security Dialogue 2014 are to promote CIFSRF projects in Canada, provide a platform for learning exchange between CIFSRF and related projects in Canada, and to discuss the ways in which research can lead to action. To maximize the stated objectives, the dialog will be organized into four broad themes – sustainable agricultural systems, nutritional security, gender and livelihoods, and economics, value chains and policy. The Dialogue will include keynote speakers, roundtable discussions, panels and technical sessions for presentation of selected papers and posters. A summary report and communication briefs of Dialogue proceedings will be produced. Selected presentations from the technical sessions will be considered for possible publication in a journal special issue or book. Location: Edmonton Clinic Health Academy University of Alberta 11405 87 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T6G 1C9

Rural Broadband Budget Announcement
Via the Rural Development Institute: Gaining access to broadband is welcoming news for those with dialup in rural Manitoba and Canada. This week’s Federal budget announced a $305 million to improve the digital connection for 280,000 rural households. The Budget announcement also called for changes in the Telecommunications Act, ensuring fairer prices when wholesaling broadband to others. In a 2013 announcement, the Government stated it will only renew wireless spectrum licenses if they are providing high-speed internet access to rural Canadians.
To put these Federal Government announcements in perspective, the Journal of Rural and Community Development (http://www.jrcd.ca) recently released six articles examining rural broadband in Canada. Taken together, the papers present a comprehensive view of three crucial measures of what gives value to broadband in rural Canada, namely availability, adoption and impact. In this country, we have sought to improve these aspects of broadband policy and implementation through public private partnerships. The research studies presented here demonstrate the many ways that partners can be contractually linked to achieve differing objectives. The authors give us much to think about in terms of how effective these partnership relations have been, or could be in the future.
