I don’t understand the vitriol against “x reader” writing. Now I completely understand not enjoying it. I personally don’t tend to enjoy first person fictional narratives. We all have preferences so I get why people wouldn’t like it.
What I don’t get is the aggressive anger and derogatory language used to describe it as a form of writing, especially the rudeness towards those who read or write it.
This post is not a criticism of someone’s preferences. It is a criticism of behavior.
It reeks of “high art vs. low art” attitudes, which is the bane of my existence. The irony of those attitudes and arguments being had in relation to fan fiction is almost funny. Like, you get how you’re being silly, right? You get how anyone outside of fandom space looks at you talking shit like this and think you’re just as silly as the people you’re making fun of, right?
If your argument is about anything other than preference, or good faith constructive criticism on improving technical skill, you’re being a snob and I genuinely believe it does a disservice to every kind of artist/writer in a community.
Arguments I keep seeing that drive me crazy:
1. “It’s cringy” - If that is a word you are using in an argument, then I think you might not be equipped to participate in this conversation yet. Your second hand embarrassment is never an excuse to be rude and disparaging.
2. “It’s just not good writing” - This is not an actual criticism of anything like grammar or improved dialogue. This is writing off a genre because you think it isn’t good enough. Please consider how many classic and well loved books throughout history were self insert pieces. The Divine Comedy being one of the most culturally impactful off the top of my head. Do you genuinely not realize how many beloved books were written specifically for one person to insert themselves into? Both children’s books and works for adults.
3. “It’s immature and childish” - That is not an objective statement and can’t be used as a solid argument. But even if it was, why do you think it is wrong or beneath you to indulge in childish things? It doesn’t actually harm anyone. I imagine the people who make this argument are the same people who belittle Disney adults when arguably the worst sin they’re committing is being annoying. Sorry you lack appreciation for whimsy I guess? You’re really missing out.
4. “Well at least don’t put it in the main tag so I don’t have to see it” - I am not sorry that you have to see content that does not appeal to you in a place where that content is relevant and on topic. This statement is trying to dictate what is “good” and what “deserves” to be included. Are you going to tell “bad” visual artists not to put their art in the main tag because you think they’re not “skilled” enough so you don’t want to see their “ugly” art? I really hope you’re not doing that directly, so why would you do that to writers? Do you not respect writers as artists?
Please don’t fall into the condescending “not like other girls” type “criticism” that strongly reflects the same type of criticism used in “high art” circles to devalue and prevent others from producing and enjoying art.
Personally, as an artist who works in a variety of mediums that historically have been considered (and is often still considered) “low art” or “just craft” this is infuriating. That attitude and that language is consistently used to bar people, often marginalized people, from having their work valued at all. It’s a much larger problem than fandom discourse. But fandom discourse does have a place in talking about that problem.
There’s nothing wrong with not liking it. There’s nothing wrong with politely asking for these things to be tagged “x reader” or “character x reader” so you can avoid them! I’ve been asked before and I’m happy to oblige because it takes me five seconds and it means I get to interact and connect with that person in other positive ways.
I’m sure you know this subconsciously, but maybe acknowledge consciously that you don’t have to enjoy everything someone does or makes to enjoy other things about them. Confession: there’s some writers I follow where I don’t read their fan fiction simply because it’s not to my taste. But I love reading their analysis or their silly jokes. So I’m more than happy to just scroll past what doesn’t interest me.
I genuinely don’t see the difference between avoiding x reader stuff someone posts and avoiding a particular fandom someone posts that you’re not into. Do you guys genuinely not follow people who sometimes post about things you’re not into? Again, I feel like if that’s the case, you’re really missing out on watching people find joy in the things you don’t.
Just know, the same insulting garbage you throw at others is being thrown at you by people who think your art is degenerate and frivolous shit simply because it’s fandom related. You are no better because you enjoy reading about your blorbos interacting with each other instead of imagining interacting with your blorbos yourself.

Sneeze Travlers
Scrooge McDuck x Reader
It was allergy season, the worst season for you. You held in a sneeze, hesitating to do so afraid of which dimension you'll travel too today "Nuh-uh no way I'm not gonna sne- ahh.."
You gave in and let out a sneeze, you were now in a mansion. You looked to your left a spotted a TV room where chatter was coming from. You poked your head in and what you saw shocked you, a human sized duck?? He wore a black tophat with a red stripe and a red robe
He looked in your direction and let out a gasp "bless me bagpipes..." He said shocked and slowly approached you. You felt your nose start to twitch. "What are you lassie?" He questioned as you gave out a sneeze just to find yourself back on your bed.
"Ah, back in my bed, no Irish humanoid ducks, and no mansion" you sighed quite relaxed. You sneezed and were suddenly back where you were before, and spotted the same duck as before bewildered at your sudden appearance "curse me kilts what's wrong with you?" He questioned
"Well, you see. Whenever I sneeze I'm basically transported to another world." You explained fidgeting with your hands "ah a sneeze traveler" he confirmed nodding his head "I'm sorry a what?" You asked looking down at him "oh never mind that lassie, your welcome at this mansion anytime" he said cheerfully patting your back. You couldn't help but smile
"Scrooge McDuck is the name! What about you lassie?" He asked intrigued "I'm Y/N L/N, but you can call me N/N" I said calmly. My nose started to twitch as I waved goodbye to Scrooge and sneezed back to my dimension
★Few months timeskip★
You let out a sneeze and found yourself on the couch of McDuck manor, you let out a groan as Scrooge handed you a tissue "Thanks Scrooge" you said blowing your nose then throwing the tissue away "any time." He said sitting down on the separate chair. You let out another sneeze as 4 children sat in the doorway
"Who was that, what was that?!"
"How much do you think I could sell it for?"
"They look so cool!"
"I need to write this in Jr. Woodchuck Guidebook!"
