One teen girl experience I don’t think teen boys understand is that the first things to decorate our keychains after we get our license are self defense devices. A kid in my physics class picked up a girls alarm and asked what it did. After being told, he did the whole “should I pull it” joke. I expect that every girl in there understood exactly how important having it was but I think that guy saw it as something strange to have.

When I was a kid I saw all the ‘girl power’, ‘be yourself’, ‘don’t let men’s/society’s opinions control your value’ stuff and thought “yeah that seems right” and internalized it but apparently you’re only supposed to take that advice after feeling bad about yourself for years and I did it wrong.
