i keep seeing that post about how frustrating the buff guy -> petite girl type genderbending is, and i wanted to add my two cents regarding the addition of ‘just swap pronouns and don’t change the design’ approach because i think these are two sides of the same coin, as they both fail to really delve into what i think is the most interesting aspect of this design exercise.

the reason i find genderbending to be such a fun and interesting challenge is because, if you actually want to be good at it and put thought into it, you have to really consider the character’s canon gender expression and think about what it means to them and how it reflects in their outward appearance and presentation.

is this male character buff because he likes to work out / be strong, or does he aspire to achieve conventional heteronormative male beauty?

is this female character a tomboy because she likes to express herself in a more masculine way, or is she doing it to fight gender norms?

the answers to those questions should produce very different designs!

this website loves to say that gender is a spectrum, but sometimes i genuinely wonder if people actually understand what that means. 

gender expression, much like gender, is also a spectrum, which is why keeping the character exactly the same won’t always work, in the same way that just making the character conventionally attractive won’t always work. but sometimes, a buff dude would actually just be a hot girl. lady bane, however, would 100% look exactly the same.

online communities are so strange because people slip away so easily. you can be on here for years, folding people you've never met into the fabric of your daily life, and then they disappear, leaving only ghost posts scattered across tumblr behind. or their blog stays dormant, for weeks, months, years, until you're only still following them because you remember that they love sunflowers or they were kind to you when they didn't have to be or the last thing they posted was sad and raw and you still worry about them sometimes.

and sometimes they come back when you least expect it, years later, even, and there's this sudden rush of relief like there you are, there you are, even though you barely knew each other.

there's a strange kind of love to it. i don't know you and i want to hold your hand across miles and time zones and oceans. i can still see the imprint of you in this community you left. you don't anyone will notice or care when you're gone, but we notice and we care and we wish you well.

i hope you're all okay out there. i hope the sun is shining on your face and you are breathing deeply. i miss you.

Relationships that have real king/lionheart energy, that whole “I have sworn myself wholly to you, I am your sword arm, I am your dog” to someone else’s “you are the one person in this world I can rely on, and I am both bolstered and burdened by your absolute faith in me” vibe, but it’s in circumstances that are like. so low stakes. Manager of a movie theater/the one usher who doesn’t smoke weed at work.

Not to be a teacher on main but a lot of people in the "video essay" community need a reminder on what an essay is. an ESSAY is NOT an explainer, an account of an investigation, or a summary of information. It certainly can involve those things. However, an essay is an argument for a particular idea backed up with analysis and evidence that supports that point of view. "the themes of Barbie, explained" is not really an essay. "how the themes of Barbie reinforce gender essentialism" is an essay. "the story behind this cooky subculture" is not essay. "how capitalism co-opted this subculture" is an essay. "all the ways Oppenheimer isn't historically accurate" isn't an essay. "here's why I think Oppenheimer is about the cult of individualism" is an essay. "I spoke to all these people about this topic and here's what they all said" isn't an essay. "I investigated this topic, spoke to these people, and here's how what they said supports my thesis" is an essay. At its most basic level, an essay answers the question of "why the fuck should you care?" at every point. It doesn't get bogged down in context or summarisation. A lot of "video essays" are not really essays they're just people saying, "I found this thing and I wanna show you the thing" and there's nothing wrong with that. It's just not an essay. Just because a video goes for longer than 5 minutes, doesn't mean it's an essay!!! I'm kinda annoyed at how the essay as a form is getting lost. A lot of people calling themselves video essayists are not actually making essays and as an essay enjoyer I am annoyed by this and think people need to call a long form video a long form video rather than calling all of them essays!!
