This class was eye-opening for me, as it made me realize that I struggled with drawing for a very, very long time, even after going to DASH. My art was always improving, but as the years passed, I’ve started to notice that I would struggle with a drawing before a painting, and get frustrated when the figure in a painting would look anatomically incorrect. The drawing phase was a success, so why am I having problems with the figure as I’m painting? I started to understand that, in order for a painting in the Baroque period to be successful, the basis of the painting must be strong.
I’m glad that Figure Drawing is a prerequisite course the the animation program I’m interested in. This class introduced me to certain means of measuring and drawing the human body, some I’ve never heard of (such as cross contouring and mass gesture drawings). Learning about the various methods made to understand the human body ensured me that there’s no absolute way to depict the human body. Any method can be used so long as it is helpful, useful and successful.
The assignment that I enjoyed the most had to be the Landmarks assignment. The videos discussing and demonstrating it were immensely helpful, and I found it to be the easiest method for me to get familiar with. I believe that the drawings in the final session of the Landmarks assignment were my best and most enjoyable. When there is ease in the drawing process, the product tends to come out the best.
My favorite materials is... hard to choose. At the beginning of this class I invested in a set of charcoal pencils from another manufacturer, dissatisfied with the super scratchy pencils from another semester ago, and that’s when I started to love charcoal pencils even more. Graphite will always reign as my favorite drawing material, but the charcoal pencils I bought were a pleasure to work on the assignments with.
There were a number of assignments that I failed to complete or do entirely. I also found myself struggling to catch up to numerous assignments, having to neglect others in order to catch up. One of the assignments I struggled to finish was the Proportions assignment. We had to use the head of the figure to measure the rest of the human body. Not only was this challenging to execute with figures bent in certain positions, but I had to work on another assignment I fell behind on. I managed to make what I can with using a head a a measurement tool, but there’s no guarantee that I’ll use it again in the future.
My goals from here on now is to assess my drawing skills and see what I can do to improve drawing the human body. From eye placement to learning how to draw hands and feet without struggling, I want to tackle it all without getting frustrated. When I feel that my drawing skills are at a certain level, my goal is to make a successful painting with a successful drawing as a basis. Another goal is to create a clean storyboard animatic with correct anatomy and drawings that are expressive but not messy.
Figure Drawing is such an integral class and it really cemented how much I want to improve my drawings, even beyond human figures. I’m grateful for this class and the amount of information presented. There is no absolute method to depict a figure, like there aren’t just two options to pick from in life, and that’s a beautiful thing.
