The tension was palpable in the air for the past half hour, ever since Astor had decided slacking while playing cards became tedious, and started playing like he meant it. But it was now, that the last cards were scattered on the table that it reached its peak and everything went still - even the cat that had been brushing against his leg all this time. The hand of a man he’d been playing against twitched slightly, and Astor moved his hand lazily over the hilt of his dagger, tucked safely at his side. It meant a warning, even if Astor hardly seemed to pay attention. 

The man cursed and got up, knocking the chair back as he stormed towards the men that were watching him - friends, Astor guessed. He also guessed it’d be smarter to stay here for a while, he had a job to do, not pick a fight with the five of them in the street - no matter how much he wanted to do just that. “Do you want to sit? Or play.”, he said casually, looking up from the cards to the person whose eyes he felt on him, “The drinks are on him.” 

“Lets give it a go,” Adalina grinned as she slowly stood up from her seat to move towards the man. It was a slow and steady movements to upset her old injury that continued to plague her. It was a dull pain in her leg everyday but she knew how to avoid inflaming the terrible pain.

“I’m sure having grown up here is an advantage in your work,” Caroline nodded. “Although perhaps sometimes it has its drawbacks?” She didn’t doubt that some took the young police officer less seriously because they had known her as a child. She got the feeling that the woman didn’t take shit for long from anyone though.

“Totally,” she nodded. “I was always running around the city doing something stupid so I know a lot about the city that people who grew up in small town in Ohio might not know,” she laughed.

Oliver’s eyelids dipped closed briefly as she ran her fingers through his hair. When he opened them again, he focused on her face. “Thanks,” he drawled, his eyes still lazy. He would let her do that all day if he didn’t have other things he wanted to do with her. 

“Thank God,” he huffed out. All the blunt talk about sex and what they would look like naked together had things going on below the belt. If it had taken much longer,  he would have had to put the groceries down so he had his hands free to pull her in and kiss her. 

“I’d get the door, but my hands are kind of full,” he said with a mock apologetic look and a shrug. 

Adalina smirked at his reaction to her hand running through his hair and made sure to remember to use that to her advantage later. She couldn’t wait to get inside her apartment and into her bedroom. Thankfully she hadn’t purchased anything perishable and they could throw the bag in the kitchen before seeking somewhere more private - the only downside of living with roommates. 

“That they are- you were the only who wanted to be a gentleman,” she teased as she pulled her keys free so she could unlock the door to her building and led the pair to the elevator, another thing she was grateful for in his apartment. She wasn’t going to do anything that could get her kicked out of her apartment so as much as she’d be willing to have sex in the hallway or the kitchen....they’d have to make it to her bedroom with all their clothes on. “I’m only no the third floor so not a long ride.”

“If you can outrun me, I’ll owe you dinner,” he said with a soft laugh. “But I’m pretty sure I could run circles around you before I ever get tired.”

“Rude,” Adalina laughed. “I’m a cheap date anyways. A good old dinner with milkshakes and burgers is all I would need so you better watch out. I’m coming for you,” she grinned.

Louis nodded along, although they weren’t in the same line of work he could understand why being strapped to a desk in her particular career field was tortuous rather than a sign of pride. “I would be, but I’ve noticed you’ve packed on quite a few. The endless bags of potato chips haven’t served you well, you should’ve gone for the carrot sticks.” This was Louis’ version of playful ribbing. “Are you feeling better?”

“Wow,” Adalina laughed. “I look hot as fuck and you fucking know it. I look even hotter than I did a few weeks ago cause I’ve got all these scars now and that is sexy as hell so shut up. You are just jealous,” she teased. “Loads!! Can’t wait to be busy again.”

“Glad I could please you on that” He laughed as he shook his head. Some would consider him self depreciating but he tended not to have the best view of himself in general so he did appreciate it when others had more faith in him. “I’m not going to argue with you on any of that Adalina, nice to know you’re equal opportunity when it comes to asking someone out. Opposites attract and all that. “He acted like it wasn’t a big deal but he preferred people his opposite since he felt like he was such a mess. “ He does look really good. I don’t think the dude has aged since the 90s. I’m sure it’ll happen”

“That should always be your goal, Harrison.” The cop smirked. “Exactly! I mean there are few like me and sometimes confidence just comes across as pompous- I am really just looking at the physical aspects of someone. If it is only for a night of fun then the personality isn’t that big of an issue. At least to me,” she shrugged. “If only he was single and ran in the same social circles as me,” Adalina laughed. “Cause I’d be flirting my fucking ass off. Who wouldn’t?”

He chuckled, “oozing charm is something I was striving for, so success on my end,” he joked lightly. He nodded as she talked, “absolutely is incredibly sexy to see a scar. Like I said, there has to be some story behind each scar and makes you want to know why the person has that scar,” he said with a smile. “Hey maybe you can come out and run with me every once in a while, I promise I won’t go too fast so you can keep up.”

“I might take you up on that- I can sometimes talk myself into it when it is warmer but even then,” she laughed. “If you think you can keep pace with me then we should do it.”

“Right back at you.” It was a constant shock that Louis enjoyed Adalina’s presence as much as he did. She was the perfect mixture of lippy and clever, though rarely at his expense, which certainly helped. They truly clicked, a rarity for the wolf. Cracking open a bottle of beer for each of them, he slid hers across the counter to her. “Were you able to take a leave of absence from work?”

“Doc said I couldn’t risk tearing my stitches so it was either desk duty or hanging at home so I picked home. Relaxing sounded far better than sitting there and having people ask questions about them- hate hospitals and injuries so didn’t bother with that,” she laughed. Adalina “I barely left my bed or couch and ate a lot of junk food which was amazing! I am sure you are so insanely jealous of me,” she teased.

And definitely the mussed hair that she seemed to like. “If I had a free hand I would muss it up more for you. But maybe you can do the honours,” he winked, leaning down towards her a little before straightening up. 

Oliver sucked in a breath at her blunt words. “God, see, yup, just moved right up to the top of my favourites. But I think we should probably test your theory. For science.” 

“It does,” she agreed. “Thank for the honor of being the one to muse your hair and give it that I just woke up look that I think you have totally perfected,” she teased as she ran her hand through his hair.  

Adalina laughed loudly at Oliver’s reaction and nodded her head at his suggestion. “We have to do it for science,” she smirked. “I also knew I could get up that list pretty damn easily- look here we are.”

“They are very comfortable, but that’s not the important part. What matters is how cute they look.” She said this kindly, but Elise was absorbed in her internal struggle. She knew Adalina was trying to help and made a valid point that she should listen to, but Elise was torn.

“Comfort matters. Like a fuck ton,” Adalina stressed. “Cute is cute but if your feet are aching within ten minutes of wearing them then what was the point of them and the money you spent. Unless you are going to get a good ass deal on them then comfort always wins.”

You will look better than those the same age once you’re older. You could be me and seeming like you’re aging over night” He joked. “

“Better!” Adalina laughed. “Shyness isn’t a turn off- not everyone has the same confidence levels as me. I have been told before my confidence is off the charts,” she smirked. “Also been told my lines are shit but they work because of my confidence. I personally think they are all fucking awesome,” she said. “Hopefully I pull a Paul Rudd. He is turning 50 this year and still looks like he is fucking 30 years old
