Windows 10’s “Sets” App Tabs Are “No More”
Mega Pixel/Shutterstock
Sets was going to bring tabs to File Explorer and other Windows applications. An early version of Sets once appeared in Windows Insider builds, but Microsoft pulled it. Now, according to Microsoft’s Rich Turner on Twitter, Sets is “no more.”
We were really looking forward to Sets, as we’ve always wanted tabs in the File Explorer as well as console windows like the Command Prompt, PowerShell, and even Linux Bash shells on Windows. Tabs in other applications like Notepad would be really cool, too. Sets offered native tabs any application could use. Here’s how Sets worked when it was available in Windows Insider builds for a short time a year ago.
Back in June 2018, Microsoft removed Sets tabs from the Windows Insider build and thanked users for their “valuable feedback… as we develop this feature helping to ensure we deliver the best possible experience once it’s ready for release.”
Microsoft has been pretty quiet about Sets ever since. In December 2018, Windows Central’s Zac Bowden claimed Sets wasn’t “cancelled” according to his sources at Microsoft.
But, five months later, Sets is looking pretty canceled. In response to a question about when a tabbed console environment would arrive, Microsoft’s Rich Turner said “the Shell-provided tab experience is no more”—he’s referring to Sets here.
Turner also said “adding tabs [to the console] is high on our to do list.” Surely Microsoft wouldn’t be working on adding tabs to the console if those native operating system tabs were still their way any time soon.
The Shell-provided tab experience is no more, but adding tabs is high on our to do list.
— Rich Turner (@richturn_ms) April 20, 2019
It’s a bit crazy that we have to parse Microsoft’s plans from errant tweets, but that’s how it goes. It appears Microsoft has quietly canceled Sets without actually telling anyone outside of Microsoft. We’d like a more official statement, of course, but Microsoft may never release one and may let the memory of Sets quietly fade away.

The Best Women’s Electric Razors
UfaBizPhoto/Shutterstock.com
An electric razor is one of the most popular ways to remove body hair. It’s not a perfect method (none of them are) but with the right razor, you’ll be happy with the results. Here’s our pick of the best women’s electric razors out there.
Everyone’s needs and skin are different. We’ve checked out razors focused on helping those with sensitive skin, as well as for those times when you need to trim facial hair carefully. No electric razor can provide as close a shave as a manual razor, depilatory cream, or wax solution but it’s one of the safest methods. You don’t have to worry about cuts or burns through inappropriate use. Many also work just as well when dry shaving as wet shaving so there’s no messiness to contend with either.
Whatever your needs, we’ve got you covered with the best women’s electric razors out there.
Best Overall: Panasonic Cordless All-In-One Advanced Wet & Dry Electric Shaver ($50)
Panasonic
The Panasonic Cordless All-In-One Advanced Wet & Dry Electric Shaver is good for every situation in life. It’s fully immersible so you can take it in the bath with you as well as the shower, and you can always opt to use it completely dry with minimal issues for your skin.
Its rechargeable battery takes about an hour to charge but when you’re in a rush, you can simply charge it up for 5 minutes and it’ll be good to go for one shave.
The razor uses four, ultra-sharp blades for as close a cut as you’re going to achieve with an electric device, with hypo-allergenic foils that are gentle on sensitive skin. The design of the shaver means it’s ideal for tackling your legs, underarm, or bikini areas without contorting at awkward angles.
Buy on Amazon
Best Value: Panasonic Electric Shaver ($15)
Panasonic
If you’re on a tight budget, the Panasonic Electric Shaver will still serve you well. This time around there are only three blades but it will still serve you well in most cases. That’s thanks to its flexible heads which do a decent job of shaving your legs, arms, and bikini areas reasonably closely. There’s a pop-up trimmer too which is good for when you just need to maintain a few key areas of your body.
Don’t expect to fully immerse this one in water, but you can still use it in the shower without a problem. The rechargeable battery is slower too, taking 12 hours to charge fully, but it’ll last as long as the more expensive Panasonic with 20 minutes of use.
In an ideal world, we’d still recommend the more expensive Panasonic, but if you need to spend wisely, this one should still get the job done.
Buy on Amazon
Best For Sensitive Skin: Remington Smooth & Silk Electric Shaver ($40)
Remington

Windows Updates Are Breaking PCs With These Antivirus Programs
Shutterstock
On April 9, Microsoft issued a Windows patch that broke PCs with certain antivirus programs installed. This affects PCs running Windows 7, 8.1, Server 2008 R2, Server 2012, and Server 2012 R2—not Windows 10, this time.
After the update is installed, you won’t be able to log into Windows if you have affected antivirus software on your system. Windows will grind to a halt after you sign in.
This problem affects PCs with Sophos, Avira, Arcabit, Avast, and McAfee antivirus software. Microsoft has been continually adding antivirus programs to this list and McAfee is the latest one. To protect users, Microsoft has added a block to this update that prevents it from being installed on PCs with affected antivirus software.
If your PC did install the update before Microsoft put a block on it, you’ll likely need to install an update for your antivirus software to fix the problem. Microsoft provides more information about these known issues on its website.
It appears that Microsoft made a change to CSRSS—the Client Server Runtime Process— in this update. This change is causing problems with some antivirus software.
Of course, not all antivirus software is affected. We like Windows Defender (that’s Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows 7) and Malwarebytes. Neither is experiencing any problems with this update.
Thanks to Ars Technica and PCWorld for shining the spotlight on this.

Should You Buy the New Disc-Free Xbox One?
Microsoft
Microsoft just announced the Xbox One S All-Digital Version, an Xbox without a disc drive. They’re priced at $250 and include three games to start, so the question is: Should you buy it? Surprisingly the answer isn’t “no, not ever.”
Look Ma! No Discs!
Microsoft’s latest Xbox is a bit of curiosity. Imagine an Xbox One S. Now remove the disc drive and cover up the hole with a plastic face. And you have the Xbox One S All-Digital Version. Why not retool the console to account for removal of the drive? In an interview with Ars Technica, Microsoft’s Platform and Devices GM Jeff Gattis explained that even though it looked like a ten-minute design job they did in fact run through a new testing cycle and opted to go with the same form factor to keep costs down.
The change is more than just a redesign or lack thereof, however. Over at our sister site How-To Geek, we’ve detailed how this new Xbox fulfills Microsoft’s original vision for this console generation. But to get into whether or not you should buy it, really we need to dig into what you’re giving up and what you’re gaining.
Say Goodbye To Buying Physical Games And Movies
Just a few of the games I own and couldn’t play on the new Xbox Josh Hendrickson
Buying the Xbox One S All-Digital Version (which has a name so terrible it’s a strike against purchasing the thing) means giving up the ability to use any physical media. And that’s something to think through on multiple levels.
Do you ever buy used games? You can’t do that with this system. Do you trade or borrow discs with a friend? Also a no-go. Do you care about best price? Physical media is often on sale cheaper than the digital version, but that won’t help you with this Xbox.
Do you prefer the absolute best possible picture and sound from your movies that only physical media can provide? Well, you’re going to have to buy a Blu-ray player to go with this thing. Do you already own Xbox One and Xbox 360 games on discs? You can’t play those on this console.
Do you have multiple Xbox consoles in your house? We made a strong argument in our article about whether or not you should buy physical Switch games based on whether or not you have multiple consoles and players in your home. While the Xbox has way better cross-console sharing than the Switch, you still need to download the data to multiple consoles which raises our final consideration.
While maybe none of the previous points apply to you—perhaps this is your first Xbox ever and you only buy movies in digital format, or you subscribe to Netflix, Hulu, and other services instead—you still need to ask yourself an important question: “Do I have a Data cap?”
Unfortunately, many ISPs enforce data caps now. And it’s not uncommon for a game to be 80 gigs or more. Buying a disc won’t cover that entirely, but it will offset a large chunk of it. And streaming a 4K HDR movie isn’t going to help matters either. If you have a data cap and you’re an avid gamer and media consumer, giving up your disc drive is something you’ll genuinely want to think through.
Like the Name Says, Your Game Library Goes Digital
My digital library far outstrips my physical games.

Daily Deals: Assassin’s Creed: Unity PC for Free, $1 Mystery PC Games, a $37 Xbox One Bluetooth Controller, and More
Fanatical, Ubisoft, Microsoft
Let’s be honest, it’s been a strange week. Thankfully, the internet marketplace is in full swing. Today’s a great day to grab a free copy of Assassin’s Creed Unity, some discounted PC games, cheap smarthome devices, and more.
In light of the disastrous fire at Notre Dame, Ubisoft is giving away free copies of Assassin’s Creed: Unity for PC. Now’s your chance to tour the Notre Dame cathedral without the help of a time machine or a 12-hour long international flight. But if you aren’t a fan of the Assassin’s Creed series, you could always participate in Fanatical’s Mystery Egg Bundle. The website is selling random games (not crappy games, I got Civilization VI)  for $1 each, and you can buy up to 10 games.
If you’re excited to grab some cheap and free games, then maybe it’s time to invest in a dedicated PC controller. Right now, you can grab a new, Bluetooth-enabled Xbox One controller for just $37. It’s easy to set up, and it adds to the fun of games like Assassin’s Creed: Unity.
Of course, video games aren’t the only thing that’s on sale today. Smarthome manufacturers are gunning for your tax return this week, and you can find just about any smarthome product at a decent discount. The Best Ways to Organize Cables Under Your Desk
Shutterstock/FotoBob
If you’re anything like us, the cables behind your desk look more like a rat’s nest than anything else. But with a little time and some tools, you can get those cables organized and out of the way.
There are a few different ways to approach this problem: people tend to either lift their surge protector off the floor and hang it underneath the desk, or leave it where it is and put it in a handy box to make it easier to hide and/or clean. We have both options covered, along with some of the other tools you’ll need to get your desk cables organized.
The Best Surge Protector Organizer Box: Quirky Plug Hub ($26)
The Quirky Plug Hub is an elegant way to store both a power strip and excess cord lengths. Quirky
Surge protectors and power strips are one of the hardest part of your desk to keep tidy, but this combination tray and able spool will keep everything straight. The Quirky Plug Hub has an advantage over some of the box designs below by keeping the plugs themselves accessible while also coiling excess lengths of multiple power cords.
The open bottom accommodates surge protectors of any length, and three internal spools and matching escapements keep the power cables from getting tangled. The box can stand on the floor or be mounted directly to the underside of the desk.
Buy on Amazon
The Best Oversized Organizer Box: U-Miss Cable Management Boxes ($25)
This low-cost set of organizer boxes can accommodate a variety of power strips. U-Miss
If you need something to handle a large surge protector and don’t need to access it constantly, this matched set should handle your needs. The largest in the three-pack is 16 inches long, which is big enough to handle the largest surge protector around, with cable escapements on either side. The smaller boxes are a bonus.
While it doesn’t have the internal spooling of our top pick, the U-Miss set is enough to handle smaller desks or entertainment centers without more elaborate mounting needs.
Buy on Amazon
The Best Under-Desk Organizer Tray: Stand Up Desk Store Raceway ($49)
This metal tray can handle large surge protectors and huge amounts of cables. Stand Up Desk Store
Those who want to stick their surge protector and all assorted cables directly underneath their desktop will be best served by this raceway design. It offers over nine inches of vertical space for even the chunkiest of power strips, with either 39 or 41 inches of length.
The metal tray screws into the underside of the desktop and runs along the back, with a long space in the top of the tray for running power and data cables to any point in the desk.
Buy on Amazon
The Best Cable Sleeve: JOTO Cord Management System ($12)
This neoprene cable sleeve tidies up any power or data cable bundle. JOTO
Cables tend to tangle between the power strip and your PC, and the surface of your desk. These zip-up sleeves keep everything tight, and they’re easy to apply and remove. The neoprene material (the same stuff in diving suits) is considerably tougher than the cotton or mesh often seen in other sleeves. Standard scissors can cut holes in the sides of the sleeves to allow cables to exit from any point.

Wyze Cam Pan Review: Impossibly Cheap, Improbably Good
Josh Hendrickson
We like the original Wyze Cam and recommend it with few reservations. Our primary complaint, lack of panning, is resolved by the new, affordable, and appropriately named, Wyze Cam Pan.
The Wyze Cam Pan continues the tradition of offering a surprising number of features for a fraction of the price of similar cameras.
Wyze achieves this by licensing cheap Chinese hardware and creating a custom firmware and app. The effort brings the Wyze Cam Pan down to around $38 with shipping. That’s significantly cheaper than offerings from anything but no-name random Wi-Fi cams off eBay or Amazon, but with features more on par with cameras that cost 2-3 times more. Let’s dig into how the Wyze Cam Pan compares to its predecessor and competition.
Wyze Cam Pan and Wyze Cam Have Many Similarities
Josh Hendrickson
Before we get into what makes the Wyze Cam Pan different, let’s cover the similarities to the existing Wyze Cam. Both cameras offer motion detection capabilities that save 12-second clips to an AWS server for free. You can add a MicroSD card local storage and continuous recording.
As your MicroSD card fills up, the camera deletes old videos to make room for new. So how much video you can keep depends on the size of the card you use. Both cameras offer two-way communication to the Wyze app and similar (if not identical) 1080p image quality, and both cameras have night vision capabilities.
Panning Means You Can See the Whole Room
The Wyze Cam Pan is noticeably larger than the Simplisafe Camera, although the latter can’t move. Josh Hendrickson
Out of the box, you’ll know the difference between the regular Cam and the Cam Pan immediately. Neither will win a beauty contest, but whereas the original camera looks like a tiny little one-eyed robot, the Cam Pan resembles a toothpaste box with a built-in camera. Honestly, the incredibly basic look to the Wyze Cams is acceptable. Fashion isn’t a Wi-Fi camera priority, and if going with a simplistic boxy design lowers cost while retaining other features, it’s a good compromise.
The Wyze Cam Pan can, of course, pan. Set it on a table in the middle of the room, and it can turn 360 degrees. The camera includes tilting capability as well. Through the Wyze app, you can drag a video stream to move your camera left right, up or down, and set up waypoints to automate back and forth scanning. Theoretically, with waypoint scanning, you can use fewer cameras in a single room. If you turn on motion tracking, the camera will follow any movement it detects, like a person walking through the room. And even better, you can combine both waypoints and motion tracking.
Mounting Options Are More Limited
There’s a mounting screw, but Wyze Cam Pan doesn’t have the flexible legs of the Wyze Cam.
But all that comes with a few downsides. The original Wyze Cam has a magnetic foot, came with custom couple double-sided tape and a matching metal pedestal, and an incredibly flexible base. You could stick it to a refrigerator, a wall, just about anywhere, and then adjust the camera’s positioning to record the room.
Unfortunately, you won’t be able to mount the Cam Pan so easily. The necessity of the box shape prevents the sheer flexibility the original camera enjoys. And while Wyze seems to offer a $9 mount, at the time of this review was written the link for it lead to a 404 error and we weren’t able to test it. The simplest option is to place it on a flat surface, like a table.

Right now, the internet is teeming with great deals. Not only can you buy any Echo product at a discount, but you can buy the newest iPad Pro for just $675, or grab a Google Home Mini for $32.
But, as always, we have a handful of favorite deals that will knock your socks off. The deal that we’re most excited about is the $65 Tenda Nova Mesh Wi-Fi system 3-pack. It’s rare to find any mesh Wi-Fi system for less than $100, let alone $65. If you’re fed up with the crappy router that’s bundled with your internet plan, then now’s a good time for an upgrade.
If you aren’t interested in routers, then you should check out the $100 Facebook Portal deal. It’s an Alexa-enabled device that’s comparable to the Echo Show. Or, you could set your eyes on the $68 Nintendo Labo 3-kit set (Japanese import). When Nintendo Labo launched, each kit ran for about $70, so all three original kits for just $68 is a steal.

The Best VPNs to Watch Whatever the Hell You Want in the UK
tsyhun/Shutterstock.com
If you’re in the United Kingdom, there’s a new censorship scheme rolling out in July that will make it difficult to access adult content online without a hassle (at best) and serious privacy issues (at worst). Here are our favorite VPNs to help you sidestep that.
Here’s the quick summary if you’re not familiar with the matter. For several years the government in the United Kingdom has been debating implementing a nation-wide mechanism to restrict access to pornographic content to adults only. After much back and forth, such a mechanism is rolling out on July 15, 2019. The legislation’s verification requirements come with potentially serious privacy issues.
Commercial adult websites—but not other sites that have tons of adult content like Reddit and Imgur—will be required to verify that the person visiting the site is of age. The government has left the methodology open to the companies, but simple “select the year you were born and check here” mechanisms are out. So far some of the methods involve uploading a copy of your driver’s license or passport (such as the method used by the AgeID system deployed by MindGeek).
There will also be physical passes you can buy in a store to get a number you can plug in, but there’s no law compelling providers to use it. You can read more about the legislation at the BBC.
We don’t know about you, but the idea of uploading a copy of your passport to a third-party that will, most likely, have total garbage security and eventually have their database stolen sounds like an absolute privacy nightmare for any reason, but particularly so in this case. If you’re sitting there thinking “How the hell do I avoid this mess?” then you’re in luck—the law does absolutely nothing about VPNs and you can easily use one to blow right by all this censorship nonsense. (If you’ve never heard of a VPN before and you need a primer, check out this great explainer from our sister site How-To Geek on the matter.)
Here are our favorite VPNs so you can watch whatever the hell you want to watch in the UK, be it Game of Thrones or Game of Bones, the way you want it with no privacy violations. We’ve recommended the following VPNs for years and with good reason, they are feature-rich and great values.
Our Top Pick: ExpressVPN
If you’re looking for the most flexibility and options with your VPN, it’s tough to beat ExpressVPN. They have over 3,000 servers in 160 locations across 94 countries. If there’s something you want to watch, no matter how it might be geo-restricted, there’s a slim-to-none chance you’ll be unable to bounce to a new country with ExpressVPN and watch it in peace without nagging (and definitely without uploading your passport).

The Top 10 Old Timey Aftershaves for that By-Gone Vibe
Clubman, Proraso
Are you a by-gone, wayfaring, classic gentleperson? Do those fancy new aftershave balms and lotions clash with your vibe? Maybe it’s time to put down some of your hard earned dough on an old timey, liquid aftershave.
The world of aftershaves has largely transitioned to creams, balms, and lotions. And while those modern aftershaves are cheap and effective, they have a few downsides.
For one, modern aftershaves are basically just moisturizer. They don’t always work well for people with oily faces, and they can feel a bit cakey. Plus, balms need to be kneaded into your face, and some people just want an aftershave with a little less rubby-rubby and a little more splashy-splashy
This isn’t to say that liquid aftershaves aren’t moisturizing. They’re made from a blend of antiseptics, oils, and fragrance—like a hydrating, mild perfume that keeps your face bump-free.
There are tons of old timey aftershaves on the market, but it’s difficult to know what’s good and what’s bad. That’s why we’ve taken the time to find the top ten old fashioned aftershaves, for everyone’s needs.
Clubman Pinaud Classic Vanilla 6oz Aftershave ($6)
Clubman
Clubman aftershaves are a barbershop staple, and for good reason. They’re affordable, they work well, and they smell great. The Clubman Pinaud Classic Vanilla is a good aftershave for anyone that wants their smooth face to carry a pleasant, mild vanilla scent. And at $1 per ounce, it’s a decent deal too.
In case you’re wondering, the Clubman Pinaud Classic Vanilla is made with a blend of oils, antiseptics, and spices like vanilla jasmine, sage, and lavender.
Buy on Amazon
Clubman Reserve Gents Gin 6 oz Aftershave ($8)
Clubman
If you’re looking for an aftershave that smells like the 60’s, then you should check out the Clubman Reserve Gents Gin aftershave. It smells of cedar chest and lime, like a cocktail, and it’s made with spices and antiseptic that’ll keep your face smooth and healthy.
At $8, this aftershave is pretty dang affordable. Just don’t blow through it too fast!
Buy on Amazon
Clubman Lustray Blue Spice 14 oz Aftershave ($7)

Blue Ember XLR Mic Review: It’s Time to Break Away from USB Mics
Blue Microphone
The Ember is Blue’s most affordable ($99) XLR microphone designed for “recording and live streaming.” In other words, it’s designed for anyone who likes the idea of the Yeti but wants the versatility and control provided by XLR.
What is the XLR Thing, Anyway?
That may be confusing at first blush—especially for anyone who isn’t familiar with XLR and what it’s good for. While I’ll be happy to give you the quick and dirty explanation of XLR just below, there’s also an excellent explainer on XLR technology at our sister site, How-to Geek. If you’re looking for the nitty-gritty on XLR, that’s where you’ll find it.
In short, XLR is a type of input (it stands for X connector, Locking connector, and Rubber boot, but that’s honestly not important) designed for high-quality inputs. It sends a balanced signal that isolates noise, which makes for smoother, crisper, and overall better audio. Sounds good, right?
Cameron Summerson
It is! But there’s a catch: it’s not as simple as plugging it into your PC, and everything is good to go. You’ll need some sort of interface to use XLR, be it a powered mixer or a dedicated audio interface.
Great, So What’s the Ember All About?
The Ember is Blue’s most affordable XLR mic for home recording, podcasters, and live streaming. The company has the equally-affordable Encore 100, but that mic is designed for singers. Before the Ember, if you wanted to get into the XLR audio thing from Blue, you’d be looking at the $199 Spark. That’s twice the cost of the Ember.
Cameron Summerson
As for the Ember’s details, it’s a simple condenser mic with a tight cardioid pattern which means the sensitive area is at the front of the mic to keep background noise to a minimum.
The grille itself also works as a sort of mini pop filter, which will soften the pop often associated with Ps and Ts, especially for those who aren’t used to actively trying to soften this emphasis with their own voice. Basically, that means the Ember sounds excellent without the need for an additional pop filter (though you can still add one if you’d like).
It ships with the mic itself and an adapter for use on a mic stand. That means you have to provide your own XLR cable and interface, which is pretty standard for this type of mic. It’s also worth noting that this mic doesn’t have any of the extra bells and whistles you may be used to seeing on USB mics like the Yeti—like a gain control or various headphone jack. Your interface handles all those things.
When it comes to using the Ember, well, it takes a bit more work to get everything dialed in compared to a USB-powered mic, but the result is worth it. You can get a crisp, clean, and smooth sound that works so well for the type of application the Ember is designed for.
Using the Ember

The Best Countertop Ice Makers
Tsuguliev/Shutterstock
Want a lot of ice for your chilled drinks but don’t have an ice maker in your fridge (or the one you have is slow and junky)? These countertop options are perfect for making a lot of ice quickly.
Whether it’s a refreshing glass of lemonade or a fancy cocktail, the addition of a couple of ice cubes immediately makes it that bit nicer, especially when it’s a hot summer’s day. There’s an easier solution to adding ice cube trays to your freezer and it doesn’t require having a fridge with a built-in ice dispenser—buy a portable ice maker. Not only can you make more ice with them than the little ice maker in your fridge can make but using distilled or purified water you can make much better tasting ice too.
One extra neat thing about countertop ice makers is the portability factor. They don’t require a water hookup and you can easily move them anywhere you can plug them in. Need more ice at a friend’s house for a graduation party? Take it over there and plug it in. Want lots of ice up at your cabin to fill coolers and make margaritas? As long as you’ve got an outlet and jugs of water to top off the tank, you’re in business.
Here’s a look at the best portable ice makers and why they’re worth your time.
Best Overall: Costway Ice Maker ($126)
Costway
When it comes to the best ice maker out there, you’ve actually got a few options. As an honorable mention, the Frigidaire Portable Compact Counter Top Ice Making machine is pretty good, but we’re slightly bigger fans of the Costway Ice Maker. Why? It’s lighter and smaller so it’s easy to place in your kitchen without taking too much room. It’s also speedy and highly effective.
Able to work without interruption over 24 hours, it can make up to 26lbs of ice which is more than enough for a great party. Its ice cube basket has a capacity of 1.5lb so you don’t have to swap it out too often with basket load averaging 8 minutes (depending on if you go with small or large cubes). At all times, you can check out what’s going on via its seethrough window. There’s also a light that indicators when the water level in the reservoir is running low, and when you need to add more water. It also gives you a heads up when the ice bucket is full.
Buy on Amazon
Best For Ice Options: Frigidaire Ice Maker Machine ($150)
Frigidaire
Most ice maker machines only offer a choice of small or large cubes which is usually fine for most people. What about if you’re a little pickier and like to be able to create medium ice cubes too? That’s where the Frigidaire Ice Maker Machine is the ice maker for you.
Like any good quality ice maker, it’s able to produce up to 26lbs of ice each day. Its ice bucket is a little bigger than most so it can hold 2.2lbs of ice at any one time. Where its biggest strength lies is that all-important option to create small, medium or large ice cubes. The smallest cubes only take about 6 minutes to form too, although expect the biggest kind to take about 15 minutes.
Whatever size ice you’re keen to use, this is a highly competent machine.
Buy on Amazon
Best 2-in-1 Solution: Kuppet 2-1 in Commercial Ice Maker ($200)
Kuppet

How to Do Your 2018 Taxes Online For Free
Steve Heap/Shutterstock.com.
The IRS is now accepting 2018 tax returns, and they’re due on April 15, 2019. Popular tax programs often advertise “free” returns before hitting you with an upsell, but here’s how you can do your taxes for free.
Incomes Below $66,000: IRS Free File
Here’s a secret: If your income is $66,000 or below, you can use the IRS’s Free File service. This is a partnership between the IRS and tax software companies like TurboTax, H&R Block, TaxAct, TaxSlayer, and others.
To use these free programs, you must head to the IRS’s Free File Software Offers website and click through to the tool you want to use. You can’t just go to the tax software’s regular website, or you won’t receive this offer. But, if you do click through here and qualify, you can use all the features you want with no attempted upsells—even in programs like TurboTax and H&R Block, which are notorious for charging you extra to use certain forms and “get your maximum refund.”
To put it another way: The “Free File” versions of the tax software are different from the normal “free” versions on their websites. You have to know they exist and seek them out.
And yes, this does seem to be a secret. As MarketWatch points out, 100 million Americans are eligible to file their taxes for free, but only 3 million Americans do.
Read the fine print carefully before you get started. For example, if you need to file a state tax return, not all the programs will help you. TurboTax will only let you file a free federal return if your adjusted gross income (AGI) is $34,000 or less. H&R Block covers more people and will let you file for free if your income is $66,000 or less and your age is between 17 and 51.
We recommend you click the “Lookup Tool” button and fill in the details about your age, income, and state. The IRS website will tell you which tax-filing tools you can use for free and point you to ones that can also do your state taxes for you if your state requires you to file a tax return. If you need help finding a piece of software that can do your state taxes for free, the website of your state’s revenue department may provide more information.
Anyone: Credit Karma Tax
