There's a beautiful message in Sinners about following your passion.

It would have been very understandable if Sammie dropped that guitar and gave himself to the church after the trauma he experienced from Remmick. Remmick is not the only vampire or evil entity that would be pulled by his music. He's not the only one who would take advantage of him.

But the thing is this--Do you stop living the life you want just because there are awful people out there? And if so, is living a life you DON'T want worth it even if it's safer? Could you truly be happy?

One of many uncomfortable truths illustrated in this film is that living the life you want comes with consequences. You will run into awful people who will want to hurt you while smiling in your face. And you will have to accept that this kind of thing may happen and it may happen more than once. But giving up on that life you want might not be the best answer. Living under another's expectations (like the church) may offer peace, but peace is not always ideal and can become a prison itself if it's not really what you want.

I feel like Miles says things that he thinks are romantic but they’re actually just sad.

“…You could cheat on me and ruin my life and I’d still stay with you.”

And then Phoenix is just like

“Baby…”

OK, but consider the rest of the 20th century in context with Sinners.

It's the late 1960s. Sammie has had a successful life and music career, but he's also seen versions of what Remmick wanted from him play out in real time.

He's acclaimed amongst fans of the Blues. But Elvis and Led Zeppelin are selling out albums and selling out venues playing Blues music taken directly from Black artists, that White-owned music labels and producers are willing to pay to be slickly mixed and produced so that White Youth can consume Black music without having to listen to the Black artists that originally created it.

And those Youth are starting to parrot a "peace, love, fellowship, and equality" philosophy that sounds suspiciously close to the line that Remmick was using to try and gain access to the Juke - without really having to unpack the history that would explain why those things would be considered revolutionary, or necessary. Or if they do, they're able to just pack it right back up again within a few years.

Because, five years later the Vietnam War ends, and those Youth all go back to the White Supremacist Racial-Hierarchical Echo Chamber. Maybe not all of them, but most of them do. Some of them come back out in a few years for Disco, but a lot of those are the same people who end up voting for Ronald Reagan.

i think we should start having episodes which are direct sequels to first/second doctor era serials, but only the missing ones, so that ncuti gatwa can look beautiful and deliver a fantastic monologue as he realises with horror where he is... and then we cut to a single poor-quality frame of william hartnell grimacing

Can we discuss how likely it was Stack was still inside the juke joint and it was the reason why the place had been locked up? So yeah Smoke killed the kkk for revenge but also it was his final act of protecting his brother who would have died had sun light been let in???

Also the fact that Stack could have watched everything and been the one to give Smoke a proper burial in the end? I just hate how they were separated in life and death. So unfair!

This is such a good redraw, I wish got that true blue for Kurt in the films. Plus I would've liked at least yellow contacts if they didn't want him to have the full yellow eyes

did a 15-minute draw-over of one of Kodi Smit-McPhee’s Kurt Wagner / Nightcrawler screenshots from Dark Phoenix. They massively fucked his hair up in Apocolypes and sorta fixed him in Dark Phoenix, however some key parts were missing. Regardless of how you feel abt the actor’s performance, I think the biggest sins were committed by the hair and makeup departments. I do like how they made Kurt look less white given his implied pseudo-Romani heritage— that was a cool liberty, even though Kodi himself is ***very*** white, which I didn’t know because I swore up and down the actor had to be from South Asia. Then again I don’t care— canonically he’s basically a white guy in every depiction + his disguise is a white dude. Still, brown / tan Kurt is pretty cool to me.

Allen Cumming is my favorite overall portrayal because the writers did their big one and he himself just portrayed Kurt incredibly well even if I (once again) disliked what hair and makeup did to him. But then again, as opposed to the comics, his face didn’t have the same strength— yet in all fairness, a comic book jawline is an insane expectation so, if y’all kill me for saying that then I understand.

Really fucking mad that it looks like he has on a shake n’ go Sunday School wig btw… but I’m not about to draw in a middle part, it’s not that serious but still

Thus, #Sinners being one of my favorites of this year already, I do needdddd to dissect it and give you a study of genres 🙂‍↔️🙂‍↕️🤭
