Can someone explain to me how a team, that is hoping to win both championships this year, takes possibly the best qualifier on the grid and gives him a car so far away from what he needs to push it to its limit?
But hey it’s a great car right? So if he’s not on pole then it’s fine his teammate will be. Except he’s not.
So you want one driver to drive with one hand behind his back or the other to achieve something he can’t?
McLaren have effectively decided to surrender at least half the poles this season with this stupid plan. And it’s gobsmacking. That any team who were serious about being competitive did this. But McLaren have.
It has zero logic and really comes across as dumb. Yeah it’s fine, Oscar struggles in dirty air and we are fine knowing Lando has potentially another half a second in him he can’t get out the car atm. It’s all good. Let George have pole. It’s fine we’ll start behind Max and Lewis.
It begs belief. But it’s happening right in front of our eyes. Not fixing the car to help Lando only makes sense if Oscar is getting every pole. And neither is happening.

I say nothing because I do not feel alive.
”Are you gonna tell me what’s wrong?”
”No, I am not”

I do try. I have tried. I have tried for sixteen years.”

Mclaren consistently excuse themselves and their lack of strategy and sense as harbouring "Two number one drivers" and that due to this "papaya rules" are needed and this excuses their lack of backing for Lando last year.
The most ironic thing about this narrative they are pushing, is that that couldn't be further from the truth.
Piastri and Norris cannot be equal or both number one drivers because Mclaren refuses to treat Lando as one.
How is it equal that the car its not neutral between them? Andrea Stella admitted the car suits Piastri (and is quite obviously tailored around him), this means Lando is having to fight against a car that goes against how he extracts time.
Piastri's Strategist is also the Head of Strategy overall. The Conflict of interest is massive! Along with Mclaren Pitwall constantly changing Lando's strategy to appease Piastri (see Jeddah 25').
Piastri uses Lando's setups, he doesn't use his own therefore he already has a leg up. (This is often why after changing to Lando's setup and looking at Lando's data Piastri often suddenly improves).
They receive completely different atmospheric support and narratives around them both from within and outside of the team . Oscar is constantly praised and hailed by Mclaren management (especially Andrea Stella) yet Lando is often belitled emotionally manipulated and abused and subject from ableist comments and remarks...from his own team. They also categorically refuse to stand up or address the horrific online hate and abuse he has been subjected to - despite proving them can as they have for other leagues - possibly because its their own management and driver that is often contributing to this mindless hate by regurgitating ableist mentality comments again and again. And their most coddled driver's whole PR persona and public image being based on toxic masculinity and spite.
Even on things like social media, their are always graphics and post for Piastri's achievements and none for Lando's along with merch for Piastri's win in Miami (where Lando won his inaugrul grand prix) and none for Lando when he won the Monaco Grand Prix along with breaking a new track record. And instances like the Miami posts where a post with Lando blocked out by Piastri was uploaded, made their Twitter header and on Instagram Lando wasn't even tagged. Despite this Lando is often made to do a lot of PR heavy lifting (along with breaking his back in all other aspects for the team, (ironic due to the back pain this regs of cars has given him, and how porpoising came back recently... in 2025 after another of Mclaren's setup changes that make him drop behind his teamate) go to events that don't even get covered by Mclaren on Social media (despite a Mclaren photographer being there).
So despite Mclaren excusing their appalling treatment of the driver who has been with them since he was a teenager and been very important for over 7yrs, no Lando is not on equal footing to Piastri.
Mclaren's consistent pedalling of the Number 1 driver gimmick is also genuine as the Papaya family i.e complete and utter bullshit.

GUYS GUYS GUYS
[Press Release]
FIA Approves Grade 1 Plans for Historic South African Circuit.
Constructed in 1961, the original Kyalami circuit established itself as the premier motorsport facility in Southern Africa. The pleasant summer climate made Kyalami a favourite destination for European competitors unable to compete on their home soil owing to the winter off-season.
By the mid-1970s Kyalami had gained recognition as one of the best Grand Prix circuits in the world, hosting a total of 21 F1 Grand Prix races. The Kyalami 9-Hour became a favourite race in the sports car world championship. Moto GP also visited Kyalami from 1983 to 1985. These events gained world-wide coverage, not only for the circuit but for South Africa as a country.
The current 4.522km layout, upgraded in 2016, already holds FIA Grade 2 certification and the Kyalami precinct has proven itself as a successful, self-sustaining venue with year-round commercial activity. The facility’s multi-use functionality—conferences, shows, exhibitions, activations, lifestyle events—remains central to its commercial model.
Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit is now poised to take the next step in the evolution of the track, having received confirmation that the Federation International de l'Automobile (FIA) has accepted final design proposals to upgrade the circuit to Grade 1 status—the highest international standard required to host Formula 1.
The FIA’s written acceptance of the amended design marks a significant achievement. Once the capital works are completed and a final inspection conducted, Kyalami will become Africa’s only FIA Grade 1 circuit, capable of hosting Formula 1 on the African continent.
At a press conference held at Kyalami, Circuit Owner Toby Venter and Clive Bowen, Founder and Director of UK-based Apex Circuit Design, detailed a plan which has been ongoing for five years, culminating in FIA approval of the venue’s upgrade design. Apex, an internationally recognised circuit design house also steered the design of, amongst others, the Miami Formula 1 street circuit.
“This is a defining moment for South African motorsport,” said Venter. “When we acquired Kyalami in 2014, we made a commitment to restore it not just as a world-class venue, but as a beacon for motorsport across the African continent. The FIA’s acceptance of our Grade 1 design is a major step forward in that journey.”
The proposed FIA Grade 1 upgrade—which notably requires no change to the circuit layout—focuses on enhancing run-off areas, barrier systems, debris fencing, kerbs, and drainage. “This is a light-touch upgrade in engineering terms, but one that enhances the already excellent circuit standards to meet modern Grade 1 requirements,” said Bowen.
The FIA plan approval grants Kyalami a three-year period to complete the intended Grade 1 upgrades. Initially, works will commence during periods when current business partners face no disruption to their event. Selected works will be actioned pending the successful outcome of South Africa’s place on the Formula 1 calendar and Kyalami being selected as the preferred hosting venue.
The Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit & International Convention Centre stands proud as Africa’s most iconic motorsport venue, and the preferred destination for a variety of events in the expanding metropolis between Johannesburg and Pretoria.
“Today, we turn the page to a bold new chapter for Kyalami. We are ready for the return of Formula 1 to African soil,” concluded Venter.
End.
