the thing about peter hale is that he is honestly one of my favourite characters of all time because he is just so interesting. to take a young man, violently ambitious and spurned by being overlooked for his older sister who he revered and resented in equal measure, and to give him the perfect, gift wrapped excuse to be the worst person to ever walk the earth... to put him through a trauma so appalling that it becomes nearly impossible to condemn him for his reactions... truly one of the TV plotlines of all time to me.

and then he keeps getting worse! he keeps battering himself against the walls of morality and he has nothing to show for it! strikes a deal with his sworn enemy just to get back at a teenage boy and still loses. just doubles down on every bad choice he ever made until you, the viewer, have completely lost faith in his redemption.

because for nearly 6 whole seasons, even peter's attempts at doing the right thing are always tainted because he stands in the shadow of scott's earnest morality, and derek's win-or-die determination, and will always come up wanting. but that makes those moments even more telling: peter can never redeem himself for the things that he did, so those rare moments that he chooses to do something selfless, when he puts someone else first, can serve no greater purpose on that journey. its just being good for the sake of being good. and that, from a man who slaughtered him own niece for power, is a fascinating choice.

sometimes i feel like 19 is such a violent age. you're a newly formed adult, yet you're still a child in mind and at heart. you're at college and meeting people going to Cornell law or having professors tell you they think your poetry is profound when less than a year ago, you had to raise your hand to go to the bathroom. with every shot of vodka or puff puff pass you can't help but yearn for your bed at home and a parents' embrace. at the same time you want them to stop calling and suffocating you, to finally let you go.

it's mind boggling to think that in less than five years, someone you graduated with will die and you'll see that post and think of how you passed them in the hallways just-the other day? does that still apply if it's been years?

instead of being able to call your lunch table friend group, you'll go to someone on campus or your new partner, someone who's become a fixture in your life in the same way that girl from kindergarten once was that you don't talk to anymore besides a happy birthday once a year.

your bones, the person that you are, are being crushed and yanked out of place, sinew snapping and blood splattering, as you figure out who the fuck you are. do you even like cargo pants? have you always wanted to be loved this much? have you ever been this lonely, and will you always be?

it feels like a little death. like killing your inner child, but at the same time, finally letting her go and accepting whoever you're becoming. finding who you want to be.

19 is what I thought 17 would be, except sadder. maybe that's why we don't talk about it.
