“You ready?” Steve asks me as I zip up my duffle bag and prepare for our mission.

“Just about.” I grunt with the weight of carrying the bag on my left shoulder and walk up to the doorway.

“You got enough stuff in there?” Steve smirks in a sarcastic tone.

“Listen smartass,” I smirk back, “this is my first mission in weeks and it's to save your friend so I don’t wanna hear it. I am going to be prepared.” I reply and walk past him out into the open living area.

“Fury is waiting for us up top.” He says as he walks behind me. Part of me is still nervous for this mission even though I have been on plenty before. Something about this one just feels different.

Steve and I take the elevator up to the roof of the Avengers tower and see Fury standing by a black helicopter.

“Rogers. Orman.” He greets us and we both nod in acknowledgment. “I think both of you know how serious this mission is, and that is why I have chosen the best two for this job.” he explains.

“Yes sir.” I say trying my best to look as professional as possible. Fury basically saved my life when I was younger but the man still intimidates me sometimes.

“We won’t let you down. I am very positive this will all go down just as planned.” Steve says to Fury. As I look to my side at Steve I can see how passionate he truly is about saving his friend. Barnes has been in H.Y.D.R.A’s captivity for months and Steve finally convinced Fury to let us try and free him. If this mission doesn’t go as planned he may never get his friend back and that would destroy him.

“Keep in mind when you get to Barnes he is going to be in his brainwashed state and will definitely resist you, and won’t go down without a fight.” Fury says, but mostly towards Steve since he knows he tends to have a soft spot about his friend.

“Is everything ready to go?” I ask trying to ease some of the nervousness I noticed coming from Steve. The more Fury talked the less hopeful Steve was getting.

“It’s in tip top shape Ms. Orman. Everything is ready to go. It will take you to an area just outside the base and from there you will walk to the entrance” Fury goes on.

“Thank you sir. I’m sure things will go smoothly.” I smile and he gives a small smile back.

“I will keep you updated.” Steve says to Fury as we climb in the helicopter.

“Good luck.” He says to us as a goodbye and walks back towards the tower as the helicopter whirs.

The two doors to the helicopter clothes shut and I take a deep breath. I forgot how exhilarating missions can be, but there’s always that anxious tension in the air. Especially with the severity of this mission.

I look in front of me and see Steve looking down at his hands, his forearms resting on his knees.

“You alright?” I ask and he lifts his head up.

“Wha- oh- yea I am fine.” He mumbles as if I had broken him out of deep thought.

“Are you sure? It looks like you are about to lose your lunch.” I laugh a bit trying to lighten the mood. He chuckles to himself and shakes his head.

“It’s just I haven’t seen him in so long Elira. I have no clue how he is going to act around me.” He admits, his face falling to a serious look.

“I mean just like Fury said, he is going to not be himself when we get there. He likely won’t remember you and you can’t let that affect you emotionally especially if he starts fighting back.” I say to him hopefully trying to make him feel better.

“I know I know,” He says quietly, “but I’ve lost him for so long.” He looks up at me and I can see the faint sight of tears brimming in his eyes.

“We are going to get him back Steve. I won’t stop until we will, because I know how much he means to you.” I tell him with a soft smile.

“Thank you y/n,” he replies with a smile and brings me into a tight embrace.

“Make sure you get plenty of rest. We have a long flight ahead.” I tell him pulling away from his arms and yawn.

“Nah, there is no way I’ll be able to sleep” He chuckles and I stretch my legs and slowly start to rest my eyes. Before I know it I start to doze off.

“y/n wake up.” I hear Steve tell me and I peel my eyes open sleepily.

“Are we here already?” I ask, rubbing my eyes and looking out the front of the helicopter. I see lots of snowy mountains...and basically nothing else.

“Are...you sure?” I question, concerned that we weren’t in the right spot.

“Yes, the base is sort of in the mountains. We will land right on top of them, and then head into the base itself.” Steve explains, putting his suit on and getting his shield ready. I slip on my suit which consists of a black and dark purple spandex suit, similar to Black Widow’s. I pull my hair up into a tight ponytail and finish getting ready.

“Are you sure you are going to be alright?” I ask him just to make sure he knows what he is getting himself into.

“Yes. I’ve been waiting for this mission for months. It might as well be the most important one of my life.” He says looking down and making sure his shield is fine.

“Alright, let’s do this thing.” I smile at him and shake his hand.

The helicopter lands and we immediately make our way through the forest to the entrance of the base. Fury had us get mic pieces in our ears so we could hear him tell us where the enemies were as we made our way to Barnes.

“Ok, there are two guards at the front entrance. Once you take them out get one of the keycards and you will be able to get in.” Fury explains to us in our ears.

We sneak behind the various trees until we get to where we have the entrance in sight. I scope out the two guards and think about the ways to take them out.

“Do you want me to use my powers?” I whisper to Steve who is crouched beside me.

“Use it as a distraction, I will creep up closer and when I give you the signal distract them. Then I will come up behind them and take them out.” He says watching the guards closely.

“Yes sir.” I reply and Steve begins slowly getting closer. He finds himself behind a large rock, close enough that he can easily take both of them out with one throw of his shield. I look over to my left at him and he gives me a small nod.

I lift my hand up and make a large tree limb fall right beside the guards. They both turn their heads to look at the source of the sound and Steve quickly runs out from his spot and takes them both out.

I run up to them and take one of their keycards and hand it to Steve. He scans it and I watch as the green light quickly scans the back of the ID. The two doors then open up and we walk inside slowly, keeping our eyes peeled for more guards.

“Great start, as far as I can see there aren’t any guards for the next three hallways you are going to pass through. Stark has already disabled the security system so y’all are clear.” Fury speaks to us, and we quicken our pace through the halls.

The light is a dim greenish yellow that puts a very old look to the whole building. Who knows how long ago it was actually built or how long it’s been used as a H.Y.D.R.A base. Our footsteps echo as we continue to walk down the halls taking many lefts and rights.

“Three guards on this next hallway.” Fury lets us know.

As we turn down the hallway, I lift my hands and form small purple lights within them. Similar to how Wanda has red light and uses her powers, but mine are purple and I can form different elements of terrain at different shapes and sizes. I can also manipulate pre-existing terrain and nature elements, but I rarely use that.

Using my powers, I plummet large boulders towards the guards killing them instantly. The next door that opens takes Steve and I surprise. It looks like a prison door, and the silver letters on the outside lets us know who the captive is.

J. Barnes

“It’s him.” Steve says and we look at each other but this time I can’t tell what he is thinking.

He takes the keycard and with one shaky hand and with a shield in the other he scans the card and the door moves open, revealing its prisoner.

He is sitting down, partially reclined in black sweatpants and a white tank top. His skin looks as though he has been sweating, and his hair comes down just below his jaw.

There is a doctor standing beside Barnes reading some random words in a language I don’t know out loud until he turns towards us with a surprised look on his face. Steve runs up to the doctor and punches his face, knocking him down to the floor where Steve then hits him multiple times with his shield.

Barnes rises from his partly reclined seat, similar to something you would see at a doctor’s office, but more evil in so many ways. There are all sorts of gadgets and big metal pieces surrounding the chair, and Barnes looks me straight in the eyes with no emotions.

“Buc-” Steve starts but Barnes comes charging at me full speed, and I manage to dodge his first punch he throws with his metal arm.

I use my powers to throw him off to the side and he slams into some counters knocking many things to the ground and shattering the glasses. He gets right back up and this time starts going at Steve and throws another punch, but Steve catches his hand in his own and stops the punch.

“Do you know who I am?” He asks, breathing heavily, but Barnes doesn’t answer, and he goes and throws another punch. This time though, it hits Steve across the face.

I run up behind him and kick his back strong enough to where he topples over. I pin my foot down firmly on his back as he tries to resist. I bend down and grab both of his wrists and pin them behind his back.

“You guys are about to get company.” Fury partially shouts and I turn my head towards the door and see guards coming down the hallway. I struggle to keep Barnes down and look up at Steve for assistance.

“I’ll take the guards.” He says and runs out into the hallway and begins fighting.

Barnes slips out of my grasp and knocks me on my back. He pins one of my arms down and punches me in the face. It stings more than a regular punch considering he has a metal arm. I grunt and wince in pain as my head snaps to the side from his impact. I kick my leg up, kneeing him in the stomach so I can get out of his hold.

The side of my face throbs as I throw a punch at him, but he catches my arm and twists it backwards, flipping me over and slamming me back onto the ground. I feel the breath get knocked out of me and I start gasping for air. He punches me in the face again in the same spot as last time.

I can’t tell where Steve is but if he was done fighting surely he would come and help me. Something in me wants to give up, but knowing how much this means to Steve to get his best friend back, I try to get up and keep fighting.

I throw a cinder block at his shoulder with my one free arm and he gets knocked back long enough for me to stand up. I lift both of my hands and pin his arms back to the wall using large amounts of cement and stone. Knowing Barnes is secure and cannot move, I look back in the direction of the hallway to look for Steve.

In almost perfect timing I see him knock out the last guard and come running down to me. Once he enters the room he sees his friend cemented to a wall and laughs.

“You cemented him to a wall?” He smiles at me, and I try my best to keep standing. I smile and look at him,

“Fury, we got him.” I say into the ear piece.

“Great work guys.” He tells us and I take a deep breath.

The ride in the helicopter back to the tower was interesting to say the least. We had put Barnes in an inescapable pair of cuffs that went all the way up to his forearms.

“Do you know who I am?” Steve asks him, sitting across from him.

“Rogers.” He says back in a deep, scruffed voice. He doesn’t look Steve in the eye, but he looks down at his lap.

“Do you remember how you got your arm?” I ask with my arms crossed in front of me, standing beside Steve.

“No.” He says quickly back with almost no hesitation. I glance over at Steve and he has a very concerned look on his face.

“Do you remember serving in the military?” Steve asks.

But this time he gets no response.

“Bucky.” Steve says at a slightly louder volume trying to get some sort of answer out of him. I had never used Steve’s nickname for Barnes, but Steve only calls him Bucky.

“Do you know the name Stark?” Steve asks, but still no response.

“I guess he’s done talking.” I sigh and roll my eyes as I turn away.

The rest of the ride is silent,

and Steve sits across from Barnes the entire time.
