There's a fascinating metanarrative to the secrets in Deltarune. In each chapter, you're essentially easter egg hunting. Looking for whatever content Toby has hidden in the margins. And these always feel like sinister, "wrong" affairs. Like you're getting a peek behind the curtain, at something much darker. You're not doing what you're "supposed" to do. You're not following the story like you should be. You're in the guts of the machine, raging against the boundaries of the intended path. Trying to stretch things until they snap. And we end up getting juxtaposed with the secret bosses, who... all seem like they want that too. They want freedom from their intended narrative roles. They want to see what's going on behind the scenes... And this all goes back to Undertale, of course. The entire no mercy run of that original game was much the same: we have to see what happens. We have to see how far the game will let us go. What hidden content is in store. And Toby will let us see... And I feel like, once again, we will regret looking.
