On April 7th 2020, our beloved family dog Finley experienced a jaw fracture. Our usually happy, healthy senior gentleman is no longer able to close his mouth or eat his food- it is heartbreaking to see him like this. Due to the severity of his condition, Finley’s veterinarian has warned us that we may have to say goodbye to Finley if action is not taken as soon as possible. We have found a fantastic oral surgeon who can save Finley’s life, but we will not be able to go through with the procedure unless we can raise $5000.
It is not Finley’s time to leave us. Since we adopted him from the local animal shelter years ago, Finley has been an indispensable member of our family. His girls, Taylor (19), Michaela (17), and Charlotte (8), are his favorite people, and he can often be found following them around the house with wide eyes and a wagging tail. Finley is sprightly and upbeat in nature, and has been unfailingly energetic and playful even into his golden years. It would be terribly unfair to cut his earthly time short due to financial reasons. He has so much more love left to give. We can’t imagine a world without him, especially when his condition is fixable.
While we understand that this is a difficult time for many people amid the COVID-19 outbreak, we hope that fellow animal lovers can unite to help us save the life of our dear family member. Anything helps our cause- even just sharing the link to our fund.
I am offering custom painted pet portraits for donations of $50 or more, and custom needle felted sculptures of pets for donations of $100 or more.
Please help us to enjoy many more years with our special boy. It would mean the world to us.
Thank you so much.

Sorry to pelt you with questions (im the person from your last ask) how does one train an afghan hound? So many things I look up talk about how hard it is but they don't talk about how to approach it so as to be successful. I know many sight hounds are not food motivated so how do you teach one to be at the very least fairly well mannered, house broken, etc...when they're not motivated in say, the same way a herding breed would be? I can't seem to find much information online about it.
Prefacing this with an apology because I have no idea how old this message is but I’m assuming at least 2 years. I’ll answer if you’re still around though or if there are other people who are curious! :) Also remember I’m not a dog trainer or an expert- this is just what I’ve gathered over the years showing these dogs!
the thing with sensitive breeds like an Afghan Hound is that you really, really, really should NOT scold them. They do not respond well at all- they sulk for hours, they never forget how you hurt their feelings and ruined their lives, and they will most definitely repeat the behavior that was being scolded. Negative reinforcement simply does not work with Afghans. They must be redirected and distracted. Firmly saying “NO” is as far as I would go. Afghans scream like banshees if they even get the inkling you may lay a hand on them or raise your voice at them (not that I would ever advocate such methods of correction in the first place, but I’ve seen this happen before!)
Now i’ll tell you what works!!!! Afghans generally are not food motivated. this means that instead of throwing treats at them, you need to make everything within your life together seem like a fun game. You celebrate them, you jump up and down and use your squeakiest baby voice at them, scratch their ears, play with them- rile them up and get them excited and make them feel proud of themselves. There is nothing an Afghan hound enjoys more than being celebrated and acknowledged- they are the King of Dogs, the absolute pinnacle of intelligence in the canine world- they’d tell you this themselves. Regardless of whether this is true, an Afghan will carry his head and tail a little higher after such praise. You need to continuously boost his confidence.
another important tip is training only in small increments of time- never more than 15-20 minutes a session. The Afghan hound is easily distractable. He does not have the intense focus of a Border Collie. He is also highly apathetic. this is why it is so important to make things fun for an Afghan- to disguise training sessions as playtime, and to avoid tiring him out. Because he WILL remember that time you exhausted him, he WILL remember the time you interrupted his nap, and he WILL go out of his way to avoid this happening in the future. He absolutely cannot know the training session is for your benefit in any way. An Afghan Hound will do anything for you if he is sure he is actually doing it for himself.

🐶 Hello it is your #dogblrpositivity check in! Happy dog days, we are hoping you are well! It’s great having you share you and your dog’s life in #dogblr. 🐶What is a dog you would like to have thanks to dogblr? 🐶 How do you store your dog food? 🐶 What is THE BEST THING you and your dog have done this year?
Thanks to dogblr, I’d love to have a Silken Windhound, Borzoi, or Standard Poodle!
I store dog food & treats in the bottom shelf of the human food pantry.
My little guy is fourteen years old and weighs in at a whopping four pounds- I think my favorite thing to do with him is just carry him around in stores while everybody squeals over him :’) If you were to ask him though, the best thing he’s done this year is walked with me to the dog park, where I let him play on  the big dog side (his favorite side, I think he knows we’re breaking the rules).

the “sighthound enthusiasts” anon speaks of are wrong. Afghans are top tier sighthounds- I do not make the rules
you got any feelings on afghan hounds? they're my fav dog breed ever, but a lot of sighthound enthusiasts don't seem to like them very much
I’ve met standoffish afghan hounds and goofy delightful bouncy afghan hounds. My main opinion is SO MUCH BRUSHING 😂

i spoke too soon! I will not be boarding the puppy I was talking about a little while ago. I guess the buyer wants her boarded with someone in Arizona, which I understand. the breeder (whom I’ve handled for and learned from since I was 13) may end up actually keeping the puppy instead though, because this puppy in question really is the nicest out of the whole litter. She is gorgeous! Fingers crossed she keeps her because I’d really really love to work with her.
I got to go to handling class last Saturday- it went great, especially after not having practiced in 4 years. I worked with all three of the puppies, and at only 3.5 months old they are absolute superstars. They are so confident and outgoing which can be difficult to find among Afghan hound puppies- it generally takes them a while to feel comfortable in most situations. The puppies were easier than most adult dogs I’ve ever handled, their temperaments are magnificent. and they are soooooo cute. Obviously.
I will be showing the pups starting around September when they are old enough. I am very very excited! I’m not going to handling class this weekend, but next weekend I’ll make sure to bring my phone with me so I can get some pictures of the babies. they are to die for!!
