January Releases - II
Tumblr media
As we begin February, let’s look back at all the new music released in January. Serving as a follow up to part one, here’s a recap of the last two weeks.
Beginning the year with new music is a tough job. You need to set the tone, you need to set the bar high for yourself and your peers, and some of these artists have. Check it out.
16 - Dave East, Paranoia 2
Tumblr media
Apple | TIDAL | Spotify
The growth is real! Each project this man drops, he just keeps gets better and better. Dave East is constantly setting the bar high for himself, leading up to the release of his debut album - any day now, let’s hope. I do have a feeling we may get one more project before the release of that but we shall see. Serving as a sequel to Paranoia, P2 dives deeper into East’s life. It’s as if his conscience wrote these bars. Lawd, the bars!
He indeed flexes his storytelling ability throughout the album. “Cory” stuck out to me the most. Here’s this guy, Cory, who grew up with “Homie.” They were tight but had many differences. Cory had a 9-5, where his homie was “trappin for studio time,” broke and hustling to chase his dreams. Then “Homie” got signed by a “legend” and got distant. Homie turns out to be Dave East, of course. It’s a story that many of us relate to. Friends we make when we’re younger may not always stick around. We go our separate ways when going down different roads in life. Because, well life happens. He ends the track with voicemails from Cory, to show there are always two sides. Cory felt as if East thought he was too good since he left the hood, and East felt Cory was intimated by the fame so he started to act “phony.”
Paranoia’s theme was prevalent throughout the project. It’s that paranoia that someone will come after him. The paranoia of everyone smiling in his face and hating behind his back. The paranoia that he’ll lose his place in Hip Hop, something he’s put his blood, sweat, and tears into. It’s that paranoia that drives his grind. Now, with Paranoia 2 the paranoia is still there but it’s different somehow. We hear more of East’s past, and it’s his past that haunts him fueling the paranoia. It’s his past that makes him so introspective as he shows a twinge of vulnerability. Masked with tough bars, of course. The 15-track project features the likes of Matt Patterson, Marsha Ambrosius, Lloyd Banks, T.I., and more. A must listen, so do yourself the favor.
18 - Domo Genesis, Aren’t U Glad You’re U
Tumblr media
SoundCloud
“The uncelebrated greatest”
Why, yes you are. Domo Genesis is definitely one of a kind and severely slept on. Although he doesn’t receive as much attention as other members of Odd Future, Domo is consistently progressing and proving himself a solid lyricist. At the start of Aren’t U Glad You’re U, I was transported back to high school when OFWGKTA emerged with all their brilliant fuckery. It’s nice to hear Domo, especially going solo. He does recruit a couple features from Phonte and Evidence. Oh, and Evidence is credited as the executive producer of the project - he also dropped a new project, scroll down.
Aren’t U Glad You’re U is a solid effort from Domo Genesis. From the beginning to the end, he's clearly been honing in on his craft. He’s lyrically on another level now compared to previous projects. He is focused. He is hungry. At only eight tracks, the tape is short but worth a listen.
18 - SiR, November
Tumblr media
Apple | TIDAL | Spotify
Instantly transported to a dimly lit cafe, or maybe a bar. Candles on the table highlight each table, only fueling the hypnotic atmosphere. On stage is a band, mellow and smooth, but they aren’t the highlight. Simply background, aiding to crooner in the spotlight - SiR. All eyes, and ears, are on him. That’s where November takes you.
And with only two features, ScHoolboy Q and Etta Bond, all ears are really on him. Brilliantly put together, SiR dropped his first LP exactly a year after signing to TDE.  Comparing to his EPs, he’s stepped into own and the progression is real. The album is as smooth as silk, jazzy tones put you in a trance. The Inglewood singer-songwriter-producer offers his listeners his heart and soul with his old-school sounds while still being modern. Take a listen, you will not be disappointed. I wasn’t, he’s definitely made it to my “Barefoot” playlist.
19 - Justine Skye, ULTRAVIOLET
Tumblr media
Apple | TIDAL | Spotify
Justine Skye makes her official debut with ULTRAVIOLET. Her first studio album features the likes of Jeremih, PND, and Wizkid.
"The title came about from, obviously, my hair's purple. It's like, the theme of my whole life. There's no crazy reason why, but it makes me comfortable. Throughout the different shades of purple ultraviolet is the most vibrant and I feel it exudes a level of confidence I've discovered since recording this album, which is me becoming aware of my relationships. ... I'm understanding it's not always going to be perfect. I feel like this album is a rollercoaster of that situation.” Billboard
Justine takes complete control on her debut project. From the beginning, her voice commands your attention. In her own pop-R&B style, she sings on about modern love.
"I hope...for women to be more confident and take more control in their relationships. That's something I never used to do. I was that girl that would stop everything for someone. This is focusing on myself right now. Obviously, I still need some love and affection, but I'm young. I don't need to be that invested in a relationship."
Whether it be crushing on a guy, indulging in a fling, or simply moving on from a relationship, Justine Skye is straightforward and breathes confidence on ULTRAVIOLET. She has put her all into her debut, so check it out. You won’t be disappointed.
22 - Spider Loc, The Lost Tapes
Tumblr media
Apple | TIDAL | Spotify
Former G-Unit member, Spider Loc reemerged this past week with The Lost Tapes. The 15-track album features the likes of Jay Rock, E-Note, Mack 10 and of course 50 Cent. Reminiscent of that old G-Unit sound from the early 2000s, and with some West Coast vibes, and I’m here for it. It’s definitely worth a listen, so pick your poison above.
26 - Evidence, Weather or Not
Tumblr media
Apple | TIDAL | Spotify
“And I refuse to be referred as less than a creative”
Returning with his first project in four years, Evidence dropped his third solo LP. Weather or Not is a 16-track project that features the likes of Styles P, Rapsody, Alchemist and more. He’s back with the old school flow, deep bars waxed over the boom-bap beats we’ve been missing. The album is raw. This is what you call “pain music.” The content is so real, you can’t help but nod in agreement or cringe. Well, you won’t help but nod while the beats take control over your body. This is the essence of Underground Hip Hop, praise to the most high. Weather or Not is a project you do not want to bypass, so pick your poison above.
26 - Lil Wayne, Dedication 6: Reloaded
Tumblr media
DatPiff
While we waited 4 years for the next tape, Lil Wayne released Dedication 6 this past Christmas. Now, Weezy wasted no time unloading the tape’s sequel, Dedication 6: Reloaded. Back in 2016, when Wayne first teased the release of the sixth installment, he spoke about how the series has helped me grow artistically.
“It became a different approach to the music. I started approaching mixtapes as they’re actually getting a little more recognition than the albums. That’s why when you ask me what’s my favorite Dedication, I’m always going to say the last one… You’re only better than your last shit.”
The 20-track tape features the likes of Juelz Santana, Gudda Gudda, Drake, Lil Twist and more. While hosted again by DJ Drama, this time he served remixes of Kendrick Lamar and Rihanna’s “LOYALTY.,” A$AP Ferg’s “Plain Jane,” and Lil Pump’s “Gucci Gang.” Check out the latest installment of the Dedication series, it’s a must listen.

January Releases - I
Tumblr media
As we begin February, let’s look back at all the new music released in January. Here's a recap of the first two weeks.
Beginning the year with new music is a tough job. You need to set the tone, you need to set the bar high, and some of these artists have. Check it out.
2 - Michael Millions, Hard to Be King
Tumblr media
Apple | TIDAL | Spotify | SoundCloud
At the start of the year - literally, the second day of the year - Michael Millions released his third studio LP. Serving as the follow up to his 2015 Beautiful, Hard to Be King comes in at 19 tracks and features the likes of Francoise Hamilton, Anakin, Angie Doe, Brionya James, Nickelus F, and Melodic. On the production tip, he recruited NameBrand, Nickelus F, JL Hodges, Mitchy Luv, EPTheOutkast, Melodic and Sycho Sid. It’s a solid project with intricate and deep lyrics waxed over smooth and hypnotic beats. It’s a must listen, and officially part of my rotation.
4 - Mila J, January 2018
Tumblr media
Apple | TIDAL | Spotify
Mila J released a project, January 2018, dubbing it the soundtrack of the month. It begins with her looking back at the past year, being part of a relationship that concludes along with 2017. She continues on missing him, trying to move on and then seeing him with another woman. Tables turn, and we see his side in “Missed Call.” That’s a voicemail far too many of us are familiar with. As men feel the heartbreak a little later on, her ex reaches out after they ran into each other in the song before. We hear this mystery man crooning on about missing her and admitting to all his faults. At only 6 tracks, it’s a good project from the songstress. Mila J’s vocals flow beautifully with the acoustic mellow R&B sound. And while it’s a short project that tells a story, could we be seeing a follow up soon? Mila J is always hard at work and is consistent with her music, so it’s not impossible.
5 - Various Artists, One Week Notice
Tumblr media
Apple | TIDAL | Spotify
A compilation project perfectly titled One Week Notice, it features the likes of seven artists who put this project together in a matter of seven days. The 13-track project is brought to you by Jarren Benton, Dizzy Wright, Audio Push, Demrick, Emilio Rojas, Reezy, DJ Hoppa, and Kato. Producer Kato had this to say:
"Where else would you put seven really dope artists and four really dope producers together in the same studio at the same time, and challenge them with creating as much music as possible in a week. That’s something that doesn’t just happen. So, to give fans something new and fresh that would come out of that experience, I think it’s important for hip-hop, period.”
The project is pretty good, offering different flows and content that helps highlight each artist. And the combination of artists is perfect, they mesh well as working together and not overshadowing each other. Everyone involved with One Week Notice has the same goal and know how to work together in order to get to that goal: make some damn good music.
8 - Maxo Kream, Punken
Tumblr media
Apple | TIDAL | Spotify
Maxo Kream finally releases his long-awaited debut album, Punken. The 14-track project features the likes of D. Flowers, Trippie Redd, and 03 Greedo, while produced by Sonny Digital, Ethereal, Tommy Kruise, Teddy Walton and more. Last year, Kream warned XXL his debut:
“I’m about to go full throttle into it, It’s more emotion, it’s more feeling telling the story of Maxo that niggas don’t always get to see. Not just the guns and this and that but really pain the picture. I want to take all my fans on a walk with Maxo.”
And that’s exactly how it plays. A hustler at heart, if that trap life isn’t for you there are many special moments amongst the fuckery. He indeed gives more emotion as he takes moments throughout the album to reflect, and in these moments you see how much his writing has excelled.
“Grannies” for one has a lot of replay value. With just the second track, Maxo flexes his storytelling skills as he tells this story of all of these colorful characters It’s hilarious and real - this is really how “Grannie’s” be. It’s a story of when he was younger and living at his Grandmother’s, and how his relatives were always in and out of the house. There’s always that relative who steals money, you still love them just hide your shit. There’s the uncle that got you high for your first time, and the auntie that won’t snitch on you to cops but sure as hell will tell Grandma. That same auntie who will smoke all your shit, but of course you can’t tell on her. He must have just been sitting around, observing and writing. However harsh or funny (or crazy as hell), those are the times that define you. As he shares it with the world, these are the times that defined Maxo Kream: “Grinding with your family through the struggle / Hold them down regardless.” Take a listen for yourself, and see what the Texan has to tell you.
12 - Sylvan LaCue, Apologies In Advance
Tumblr media
Apple | TIDAL | Spotify
Luckily, I built castles around these wild emotions
I’m always a sucker for concept albums. Rising lyricist, Sylvan LaCue, drops his new album, Apologies in Advance. Conceptualized around the idea of an AA meeting, “but for emotions,” as LaCue explained via Instagram.
“Each song on the album represents an emotion to confront. My goal for this album is to get as many of us to start opening up and talking about some of the issues that we deal with on a day to day basis in an effort to heal.”
The album is brilliantly put together. It’s full of raw emotion, with moments that hit close to home. In an interview with Billboard, LaCue talks about drawing inspiration from Jay-Z’s 4:44 and Lauryn Hill’s Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. It was Jay-Z’s taking accountability for his actions and telling others to take accountability for theirs is what led LaCue to feel like he should take matters into his own hands. Track 20, “5:55,” is actually a response to 4:44. He also discusses how he wanted to make a Miseducation for millennial and focus on emotions rather than love. I definitely see the connection with the group therapy sessions, which as Miseducation it aids in the connection to his audience.
"I’m writing records that are therapeutic for me but I wanted to include other people in the album so that whoever listens realizes that it’s not just about me, it’s about all of us. We’re all going through these things and that’s the overall message. Let’s take accountability. Let’s face ourselves so we can heal ourselves and we can heal other people as well."
Oh, and I see Kanye was an influence as well. As the album is modeled as an AA meeting but for emotions, it makes sense to model "Perfect Imperfections" as Kanye West's "Addiction" - like wait, I know that back and forth.
Apologies in Advance is a well-constructed concept album that takes you through all the feels. Truth weaves in and out of smooth and methodical beats. With his strategic and tangled up bars, it’s so hard not to get lost in the album. Even the interludes are on point! Not will you find who Sylvan LaCue is in Apologies in Advance, but you will find yourself. Best believe that. Take a listen to the 20-track, 9 of which are interludes that signify the 12-step program. I’ve been looking a long time for something like this, two words: heavy rotation.
12 - Bandhunta Izzy, Code Blue
Tumblr media
Apple | TIDAL | Spotify | SoundCloud
The West Baltimore rapper made his debut with Code Blue this month. The tape features the likes of Key Glock, Peewee Longway, Young Crazy, and even his brother, Bandhunta Jugg. Coming in at 13-tracks, the project supplies some heavy hitting beats that are laced with some heavy lyrics. Izzy uses his debut to really branch out and Code Blue is his growth compared to past singles and collab projects he’s been part of. The 21-year old lyricist does have a long way to go, but it’s a pretty good debut.
12 - K. Forest, When It’s All Said and Done
Tumblr media
Apple | TIDAL | Spotify
With all these artists nowadays trying to gain more streams with drawn out projects, my appreciation for the EP has grown. K. Forest released his 5-track When It’s All Said and Done this month and damn. With his first project since his 2016 EP Eyes of Taiga, the Canadian singer switches up his R&B flow from dark and brooding to a much lighter and smooth sound. A bit reminiscent of the 90’s Golden Era. This is no surprise as he has said before, “I just go with what sounds great,” as long as it connects with him spiritually. Well, amen! This new sound definitely works for him.

Recapping 2017: Standout Debuts, Pt. VI
Tumblr media
CyHi The Prynce, Kelela, Roy Woods and more - here are all the standout debuts of this year...part six that is. And yes, this is the last installment of this series. Don’t forget to check out part five here.
As my series comes to a conclusion, I reflect back thinking of how easy yet frustrating it was to put this all together. Let me tell you, I was on a mission. I even discovered some new talent myself. Tedious yet rewarding, I comprised this list to highlight 2017’s new and hottest debut projects, from Hip Hop to R&B and Neo-Soul. I offer a range of artists from those who have been in the game for years, to those just starting out. There’s a range of projects that made it on the most notorious lists, to ones that flew under the radar. Whether they are well known or yet to be discovered - both official and non-official releases - these artists and their debut efforts deserve the recognition for their creative artistry.
Here's to 2018! New year, new music!
Cheers.

Check It! An Open Mic Night - 12/14
Tumblr media
I began an open mic series and here's my quick review of my very first event.
Jitters. Butterflies. Sweaty palms, weak knees, “arms are heavy” — Good thing I said no to my mom’s spaghetti.
Yes, I was nervous, to say the least. Something I didn’t consider to happen for years, but I took a lead of faith and made it happen. I started plottin’ and schemin’, took a few months — and several migraines — but, finally, I organized and hosted my first open mic show.
Okay, not so much a traditional open mic set up, but how else to build an audience and following? Artists were able to register prior to the show. I even did some digging and found a lot of talent. My first show, I did set it up as a showcase, but man, were these people talented. For future shows, artists will be able to sign up before AND during.
Let’s get to December 14th.

Although he's dropped music in between projects, Wins and Losses is Meek Mill's first studio album in two years since his last 2015 Dreams Worth More Than Money. That album did very well, extremely well - debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in its first week.

Bryson Tiller, ‘True to Self’
by Sadé
Tumblr media
Surprise! Bryson Tiller released his sophomore album a month early on May 26th. Two weeks later, here's my review.
I’m randomly listening to Bryson Tiller’s debut album TRAPSOUL, thinking, "Damn, just one more month.” Then with a simple tweet notification, my wishes were granted. We’ve been waiting for this for what seems like forever, and I have a few things to say about True to Self.
“Trying my best to pull through for you”
The fans-riddled-with-anxiety-highly-antictipated sophomore album is here. It’s been almost two years since his debut and the content released between albums were at best…eh. Not really a sophisticated response, but that was response. People were curious to see how his second album would turn out. While most of us had faith in Bryson, the industry can be a bit tough on sophomore projects. With Bryson, TRAPSOUL was such a big debut that how could he possibly top that? Can he meet the demand? Can he deliver?
“Put me in check”
Production from the likes of Teddy Walton, Nes, Swiff D, FrancisGotHeat, WondaGurl, Boi-1da, Ayo The Producer, T-minus and more. The album is filled with samples from the likes of SWV, Tweet, Travis Scott, Changing Faces, Ice Cube, Loopmasters (or you may have thought Kendrick Lamar), Mary J. Blige and more.
As far the content itself, Bryson's style is all over it. There’s his familiar croons over smooth, hypnotic beats about love with the tracks “Rain On Me (Intro),” “No Longer Friends,” “Don’t Get Too High,” “You Got It,” and “Always (Outro). We go from the loyalty of his baby mother in “Set it Off,” to his one night stand in “We Both Know.” Then back to his crooning over lost love, or just moving on, in the tracks “In Check,” “Teach Me a Lesson,” “Stay Blessed,” “Somethin Tells Me, and “Run Me Dry.” I love that Bryson's more braggadocios in this album with tracks like “Self Made,” “Blowing Smoke,” and “High Stakes.” Then there’s the introspective tracks “Money Problems/Benz Truck,” and “Nevermind This Interlude” where he weighs his issues with fame. Oh let’s not forget his direct confrontation with his haters and his beef with his former manager on the track “Before You Judge.” With this album, we find a more confrontational and outspoken Bryson Tiller.
At 19 tracks, you can say it’s too long but it’s really just under an hour. This was a strategic move. With streaming taking over, a lot of artists are doing this. More tracks equals more streams which equals better numbers - and it seemed to work. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, and a few tracks made it on the Hot 100.
“2016 Tiller on this shit”
Standing next to TRAPSOUL…well it can’t. There’s no stand out singles on the album in the way “Don’t” and “Exchange” did last year. Turn the radio on right now, those tracks are still playing to this day. Although radio isn’t what it used to be, as an artist it doesn’t hurt to get that radio play. I have heard “Self Made” on a couple stations and I can see “In Check” in rotation. This is not to say the radio stations won’t pick up singles from the album but they won’t hold the same impact as TRAPSOUL’s singles made.
With my first listen, I really didn’t want to compare True to Self to its predecessor - but I did. It was hard not to since it picks up where TRAPSOUL left off. Holding the same cadence, True to Self easily could’ve been the second disk in a deluxe special rerelease of TRAPSOUL. Some tracks are a bit dated, probably recorded shortly after TRAPSOUL. A year and a half doesn’t seem like a long time, but in the music industry it is.
There is a bit of growth in the writing. There’s much more content and variety than the first album. However, there's not much overall growth as an artist and a lot of fans expected more.
"What you want from me?"
Bryson faced some criticism for the album. Not everybody was feeling it, including some of his fans. Some said they were “disappointed.” I’m conflicted here. I agree, this is not exactly what I expected, but then I don't know what to expect from Bryson - it’s just his sophomore album. Is it too early for change and artist growth? Or, because this generation of music is so fast paced, should he have already evolved at this point? If that’s the case, True to Self could've been a mixtape (project, playlist, whatever you want to call it) in between the debut and the second album. It could’ve been released last year to hold over fans.
I think there was just a lot of hype and people expected just way too much from Bryson. Critics and fans alike have been holding him up to PARTYNEXTDOOR, Jeremih, and Tory Lanez. Um, no. I don’t think so. Nothing against Bryson but his catalogue is nowhere near up to par with theirs. What I think people keep forgetting is that this kid is still new to the game.
When he released TRAPSOUL, I don’t think he expected it to take off the way it did. And boy did it. The hype started off slow then took off. I didn’t actually hear it until late last summer, nearly a year after the album’s release. By that time, Pen Griffey took off. Will his sophomore effort have the same longevity? It’s too early to tell at this point but I don’t think people will dismiss Bryson just yet.
“Note to self: Stay true to self”
A post shared by pen griffey (@brysontiller) on May 25, 2017 at 9:05pm PDT
With all that said, I like True to Self. I know this is a mixed review, but I'm just stating facts. I think it’s a good album. You see the effort Bryson put into it. This is the music he loves to make. While some were “disappointed” with it, I for sure was feeling it. Some tracks will make it on my "Rainy day" playlist. However, does it top his debut? Not at all, but I think for a sophomore album it did pretty good. Back in 2015, he said his music is “just trap and hip hop-influenced R&B, the perfect marriage between hip hop and R&B.” Starting off as a rapper, I was hoping to see more of that, but Bryson is staying True to Self. The R&B vibe does it for him. He’s found his niche, his pocket, and he’s running with it. That’s him being true to himself and it’s what makes him happy. His real fans will support him. Down the line, I do want to see more from Bryson. We all do as fans of music in general. I think as he grows into his own, we will see more creativity and growth from Pen Griffey. But for now, accept him while he stays True to Self.
