we'll be alright, I want to try again
Kevin Day/Jean Moreau, 11k words, written for @solelystarling as a part of @aftgexchange !
The ghosts were their first secret. “Also,” Kevin grabbed Jean’s hand before he could exit through the door. “Could you teach me French? Riko doesn’t have to know.” Kevin’s eyes shone a brilliant green. This was their second secret. Jean could survive off of this. With an ally around, Jean could maybe endure the cards he was dealt. * Or: snippets of kevjean in the nest + there's ghosts
Hope you enjoy it!! This ended up being longer than I expected so sorry that it came a week late 😭

______________________________________________________________
@aftgexchange Spring Exchange Fic for @mellvetica! Sorry for the long wait, I hope you like it! I've had a bit of trouble getting into my AO3 account the last few days, but I'll post it there when everything's sorted. There was so much I wanted to do with your prompts I couldn't decide what to write. Happy spring!
______________________________________________________________
i. no-one
Neil looked up to the heavy overhang of grey dark clouds; until the first drop slid down his cheek like a well sharpened blade that forewarned the rest.
He blinked, and it rained.
Rivets of droplets fell from the gaping sky – in hesitant splashes, then heavier, until the drum of rain on concrete settled into a staccato rhythm that beat in time to his exhales. It soaked into the fabric of his darkening hoodie. It seeped into his skin and weary bones. For a moment, he was the sky or the storm – the clouds flayed open.
Beneath him, the empty campus shined like shattered glass. If he looked close enough, Neil could have most likely found his reflection in the mirror of the gathering downpour.
Lightning streaked through the sky. Thunder came to the sound of the rumbling exit scraping against slick stone.
“You’re going to catch something.” Andrew said dryly, in the doorway of the stairwell. “Idiocy, if nothing else.”
Neil didn’t move. “Too late for that.”
Andrew’s stare bore into his skin, bringing warmth instead of the chill. Finally, he dragged his gaze from the writhing sky. Andrew met his eyes with an unreadable expression – he stepped out into the rain, quick strides stopping three feet from him.
"Sorry. I've heard it's contagious." Neil said.
"It's going to be terminal if you don't shut the fuck up."
Neil hummed.
"You’re a cliché," Andrew said, flatly – cutting through the roar of rain. “You know that?”
“Maybe I’m trying it on.” Neil smirked, wryly. He held out a non-expectant hand. "You're already wet. Might as well commit."
Andrew stared with heavy exasperation in his eyes. "You are a nuisance." He said, but slid his sweat slicked hand from his comfortable, dry hoodie into his chilled, wet one anyway.
They stood until their fingers twisting together held like the ropes of a ship braving a storm. They swayed like the waves on the sea. They stumbled and scraped their trainers on the concrete until the weight dragged them to the floor; until the water was the only thing left to drag them under.
Eventually, they fell out of rhythm with the rain. Exhaustion dragged at the remains of their night gander into a hallmark movie.
Andrew stood. "Come inside."
Neil followed.
ii. nowhere
The engine rumbled while eating up long, winding black roads. Neil sat with his legs drawn up, shoes unstitched, and forehead pressed to the cool glass.
It could have been hours or minutes. It could be the last dredge of colour in the sky bleeding into nothingness, or the light returned for dawn. Road markers slipped behind them, streetlights blinked like the worst circling déjà vu and through it all – Neil found comfort where there was no destination or check point to be reached.
Just driving for the sake of driving. Until the road or the sky become confused and twisted in wherever they’re supposed to lead.
"Truth for truth." Andrew said. Fingers rested on the wheel, not guiding but guided.
Neil hummed in thought. “I used to think running meant freedom. But now it just feels like I’ve been circling the same track I was born on.”
"Then stop running." Andrew said.
Easier said than done, were words unsaid. “What if I don't know how?" Neil asked.
"Then I'll teach you." Andrew said. "We can start a different game. If you run somewhere I can’t follow, then I will find you. I did not fight my way through the pigs just for your little rabbit heart to send you scattering.”
Neil stared into Andrew’s side profile; smile tugged tight on his face.
“It will be the world’s worst game of hide and seek.” Andrew said.
“Okay.” Neil said, quiet.
It is a fact – a truth.
Neil won’t run far from home – not without the man by his side.
They drove to nowhere, which – for once – felt like the only place worth being.
iii. nothing
Spring creeped in slowly then all at once.
Neil spread himself on his back, jacket a thin shield between him and the simmering roof. Andrew stared down with one knee drawn up into the softness of his cheek, breathing through the cloying air of the stairwell they all but shoved themselves out of.
Neil breathed in the chilled breeze – not lukewarm or blessed in the chillness yet, but carrying the courtyard’s fresh cut grass. It was only May – but the sun rays steamed his blood through his skin the longer he stayed in one place.
It was a nice reprieve – to stay under the sun for a few moments.
"I used to hate the idea of nothing," Neil said. "Like if I wasn't running, I was wasting time. Like if the monsters weren’t chasing me, I wouldn’t exist at all."
Andrew crushed a half burned cigarette into the concrete. Neil could have sworn it sizzled.
"You're still nothing."
"Thanks." Neil said, half-heartedly. “You always say the nicest things.”
He turned his head, caught the slight furrow and rise of Andrew’s brow, the softness that encroached where it had never been welcomed before.
“It is the truth.” Andrew said, after a moment where the words stood for themselves in the silence.
"Is it supposed to comfort me?" Neil asked, like it comforts you, is what he doesn’t.
Andrew lifted his shoulder, half hearted, eyes distant and dogged under the weight of the bruises beneath them.
"We are nothing of what they tried to make us.” Andrew said, finally.
Neil exhaled, felt the words fill him up instead – until the heaviness settled in his chest.
Andrew locked onto his stare. "You are nothing." Andrew said.
His calloused fingertips brushed the side of Neil’s forehead – he turned into them like a sunflower turned to the sun.
"You are nothing. So you can be whatever you want."
"And this?"
"This is nothing." Andrew said, and it was all he ever needed to.
Neil smiled – it didn’t hurt, not in the way it used to.
They are everywhere they ever needed to be. They are everything they ever wanted to be. Nothing else mattered.

HAPPY SPRING EXCHANGE!! @aftgexchange
| Fem!Andreil | Medieval AU | Magic AU | Maybe a lil bit of pining for flavour |
Hi @writtenendings , I was your gifter for this round. I loved all of your prompts so much. I chose these ones because the moment I saw Medieval I got a little excited. This piece is inspired by "The Unicorn Rests in the Garden." Also known as "The Unicorn in Captivity.", a Medieval woven tapestry. However all of the seven tapestries gave me a lot of inspiration.
I hope your exchange is a wonderful one and here's a sweet little bonus;

Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Relationships: Neil Josten/Andrew Minyard, Jeremy Knox/Jean Moreau Additional Tags: College AU, Academic rivals, jeanneil friendship, established catlaila, implied kevaaron (well they’re trying to get together), Oblivious Neil, Getting Together, Times Two!, alternating POV neil and jean, Banter, Friendship, Yearning
Neil graduated a semester early to escape the clutches of his overbearing father who insists that he follows the family business. He’s not interested in the family business. He’s interested in two things: keeping his grades up so he doesn’t lose his scholarship, and getting a research position in Betsy Dobson’s lab.
Jean is returning to campus after spending a semester abroad in France. He doesn’t want a roommate, but he gets assigned one anyhow. Enter Neil, an unlikeable child of a college student. Jean is not impressed.
Yet, somehow, it seems as though they’re destined to become friends. Not right away though, oh god no. It’s going to take some time.

AFTG Spring Exchange Fic! @aftgexchange
It is for @holediggingclubs
https://archiveofourown.org/works/65491171
I really enjoyed writing this and I hope it makes sense.
I had to cut a lot of plot I wanted to include to finish it on time but I put just as much time into looking into things that don't even make the fic (such as the three teams being within 3 hours of the new condo, the floor plan of the IKEA, looking at their heights and the dates of things (this takes place in June following Jeremy graduating)).
But I love these three and I hope I did them justice for my first fic for this series!
