Aesthetically I love when I’m going through my espionage phase. It’s very gray, rainy days fading into wet, misty nights on pavement, glowing buildings beckoning through the fog. Learning Russian and drinking tea in the mornings. Learning French and drinking bourbon at night. A slightly sharper sense of spatial awareness mixed with a stronger desire to have dangerous fun. You’d think I wouldn’t rearrange my life this way just because I read a few le Carre books but here I am, dramatic as ever.
truly did I write this and send this to myself? because this is exactly what it’s like. I love going through my espionage phase because everything seems so much more vibrant; higher definition, everything has a sense of conspiracy or danger to it. things take on different meanings; I notice more; I become more. I’m learning languages and reading history and making connections, I’m keeping a journal I hide away and creating my own ciphers to use with friends. I do all this stuff usually, of course, but with the backdrop of spy novels and archive files it feels so much more conspiratorial.
tomorrow I leave on the first leg of my journey towards London, where I’ll be living and working for several months. it’s the perfect time for an espionage phase. the entire city is alive with secrets, past and present.

Gallagher Girls- Ally Carter
“So I stepped away, reminding myself that when you’re a spy, sometimes all you can do is go on. One foot in front of the other, wherever the narrow path might lead.”
