Is it a sin, to put my muse on a pedestal? Is it a sin to look at her from my place on the hard, unforgiving ground, from the hole I have been born into and now find myself unable to leave, no matter what I attempt? I fell once, and so the Earth and its soil have become my soul and sanctuary with hers in the heavens, above me; as it has always been, as it always will be. Is it my fault that I am no longer able to distinguish between the two, to no longer be able to separate the object of my deepest, most carnal desires, and the grandeur of the altar where she is placed? Both are holy to me; one cannot exist without the other; they are immeasurable in their worth. It is impossible in my mind; they must coexist. I must erect statues of her, build palaces with her holy name on my undeserving lips as I toil away so that she may never experience a moment of discomfort, nor an instance where she is dissatisfied.

I realise now with unflinching clarity why the greatest wonders were built and why they are revered above all, even today - they were built with nothing but desire in the architect’s heart. Something made with love, no matter how small or insignificant, is bound to survive the trials of time, weather every storm and every hardship simply because it was not crafted with malice, indifference, or hatred. It is dedication and adoration which keeps these structures standing despite all that they have seen, despite the rise and fall of empires which they have witnessed in their terrifyingly long lifespans. It is love which allows them the strength to weather each and every tribulation with hope in their eyes and yearning in their blood; the foreign feeling in their bones they have learned to identify as contentment - as peace, as a reminder that tranquillity does indeed exist in the aftermath of war.
